excellent and usable book on nonparametric statistics

Speaking as an MPH level student, (i.e. not a real mathematician) this is about the only usable book on nonparametric stats I have encountered, so I ended up buying it despite the rather high price for a not terribly large book. But, as happens frequently in healthcare and social sciences, when faced with data that can't be analyzed with the normal mean and standard deviation stuff (i.e. survey answers, etc.) this book offers a lot of possibilities beyond the standard chi square test, and more importantly, is clear about what test is appropriate, and how to apply it.

first popular book on nonparametrics

In the 1960s Siegel's book was the most popular and the most often cited. This is because except for Fraser it was the only useful test available to researchers. The book was written in a somewhat non-technical manner in order to be accessible to social scientists. At the time it became the standard book for all researchers. Theoretical books such as Hajek and Sidak's "Rank Tests" Came out at the end of the decade and the other good statistical books such as Hollander and Wolfe; Conover,; Lehmann; and Randles and Wolfe didn't come out until the 1970s.

So Siegel's book has historical significance but now the pratitioner and the theorists have many other good books to choose from. The text has been revised many times presumably to keep up with the research advances that have practical use for social scientists.

Excellent first book for nonparametric stat methods

This is an excellent first book for nonparametric statistical methods. It is a cookbook, but is a good introduction to the many nonparametric techniques for assessing data. These are oftentimes much better suited for your data than the standard stuff you get in intro to statistics. The book by David J. Sheskin or by Conover should your next book.

A basic (but expensive) text for grasping Fuzzy Logic ideas

This book can serve as a starting point for doing fuzzy logic. It lacks the rigorous mathematical development of Klir's texts, and the broader contextual overview (with math) of Kosko's texts but after reading it the student can begin doing some fuzzy logic work. The problem is that it without the more rigorous backgrounds provided by other more advanced works the student can stumble into using fuzzy reasoning incorrectly. I would recommend it to undergraduates, and people who want to use it to clarify stuff from other more theoretical sources, but advise using caution in taking it at face value. I do know that Louisiana Tech uses it as a starting point for some of their undergraduate students

The least fuzzy book on fuzzy logic

If you decide to buy a book on fuzzy logic or applications of fuzzy logic, this is absolutely the best book for introductory level. In other words, this source gives a non-fuzzy and comprehensive knowledge to reader.
I strongly recommend this book to everybody for an exact comprehensive introduction to the theory of Zadeh.

Very good book for a solid background on Fuzzy Logic. Highly reccomented. Ross is a very involved author and enthousiastic supporter of Fuzzy logic theory use in problem solving. Try to solve some of the problems in the book. They provide much inside on real applications of the fuzzy logic Theory

Complex way to do a simple task.

The amount of detail is this book drowns out any overall message on the proper way to create operating procedures. No plant could ever actually follow all the recommendations, steps, and layers listed. (A collegue stated that his calculus text book was easier to read.) However, the mind numbing detail is basically correct and properly focused on what plant workers should have in a useful procedure. Great advice (if you can assimilate it)

The problem with any "how to sell" book like this is, until you can integrate the advice given here so that it comes naturally to you, you will sound as mechanical and forced as some of the "tellers" Richardson criticizes. I used to sell big-tiicket business-to-business, and I can say the advice here is timeless: engage your customer, identify what your customer's needs are and position your product so that the customer realizes that your product meets their needs. Of course, if the customer doesn't need your product, then maybe you need to learn some of those "hard-ball sales" techniques (or find a better product!). No amount of customer empathy, listening, or product positioning will help you overcome a customer-product mismatch. Which brings me to a point: although Richardson argues against this, I think playing hardball has a place in negotiations; remember, the party you are negotiating with doesn't always have to feel warm and cozy inside in the process. A true persuader will know when to be soft and fluffy and when to apply the pressure.
Also, the whole paradigm-replacement languuage ("we are moving into a new age of selling...") is corny. The advice Richardson is giving is not new or revolutionary, as she claims. But she has succeeded in organizing a lot of really good sales principles in a clear and coherent way which can easily be appreciated by readers.
I read this book together with Richardson's "Selling by Phone" and frankly, one is just a rehash of the other. Richardson copied entire paragraphs from one in writing the other. So save your money and buy just one of the two. But if you are an accidental salesperson, or even if by trade you are not a salesperson but you are occasionally called upon to negotiate (maybe you are a lawyer or a manager) Richardson's books will be a refreshing introduction to the discipline of negotiation and persuasion.

From my many varied experiences, I realize that I just don't like selling, but when I was trying to bone up on my sales skills, I found this book to be the most useful. It is heads and shoulders above other books on the subject and it was so intersting that I probably read it cover to cover in a day or two. The advice is extremely practical and you are learning great principles of selling. You are not learning a bunch of closing dialogues that only work for the person who invented them. Easily digested, the principles allow you to adjust your approach in mid-sale because you are asking questions whose answers will tell you what you need to do or say next (positioning.) Tons of great info here. It should really be a textbook for sales classes.

Poor presentation

Graphics are poor. The smallish size coupled with poor contrast make this Kindle edition very difficult to read. This was not evident from the sample provided by Amazon. This technology needs much improvement, to include better contrast, improved resolution and an ability to zoom in on illustrations and pictures.

Don't waste your time

I don't own this book, but I browsed through it, and believe me that did not take long. This book is an embarrassment to the fine Schaum's Outline series. For one thing, the words "Easy Outline" and "College Physics" don't belong in the same book title. There are only six chapters in this book, and the book glosses over the meat of College Physics with the most simplistic of explanations and no examples to speak of. If you want to learn college physics buy the old reliable "Schaum's Outline of College Physics" now in its tenth edition. It has good explanations, meaty examples, and many solved as well as unsolved problems so you can really grasp the concepts of the first two semesters of college physics. What really confuses me is that two of the three authors of this book wrote the good Schaum's outline of College Physics as well as the excellent Schaum's Outline of Optics, so they DO know how to write meaningful study guides. Why they put their names on this disaster I'll never know. I would say that this particular book is not even good enough for high school students studying physics. Avoid it completely.

Useless.

Well, I bought this book by mistake! I wanted the non easy version. Unless you want to pretend learn physics in two weeks you'd better buy the same authors and name book but non easy version! You can learn physics with that 416 pages one but not with this 138 one.

Prior to this, he was Director General, Centre for Electronics Design and Technology of India (CEDTI), an autonomous scientific society of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India. Dr Khandpur was the Founder Director of CEDTI, which is the first ISO-9002 certified organization of the Ministry of Information Technology.Dr Khandpur has served as a scientist for 24 years in CSIO, Chandigarh-a constituent laboaratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He was Head of the medical instruments division (1975-1989) and Head of the electronics division (1986-1989).Dr Khandpur is a member of board of governors, Punjab Technical University; and director, board of directors, Punjab Information and Communication Technology Corporation Ltd. He is a AICTE distinguished visiting professor, and member of the vision group on IT, set up by the Punjab Government. One of the better books on the JFK assassination.

CONSPIRACY is one of the more comprehensive books I have read on the murder of John F. Kennedy.
I have read many different books on the subject in the last 32 years. Some are clearly cover propaganda and others are the investigative "real deal". Anthony Summers' work falls in the latter category.

He spends a lot of time on Oswald and Jack Ruby. He did provide some new material on them both that I hadn't read before.

Mr. Summers lists some of the many witness statements identifying the Grassy Knoll as the focus of attention after the shooting. The statements that gunsmoke was present and identifiable immediately after the shooter fled and personal reactions from spectators make a very convincing case for that location of a sniper.

What I found even more intriguing was the identity of "Maurice Bishop" and his alleged activities in Mexico City at the time "Oswald" was spotted at the Cuban Embassy there.
The link to the anti-Castro Cubans was more clear in this book also.
The French Connection section was a confirmation of some information I have read before.

A conspiracy that haunts the public imagination.

This is an excellent book. Well and deeply researched, annotated and easy to follow. I would venture to guess that this might be one of the best books that reflect the Kennedy assassination research crowd, circa 1980. It is important to keep that date in mind because he wrote it right after the "Report of the President's commission on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy", which picked up the mess of the Warren Commission. He makes it easy to understand where the Warren Commission dropped the ball, fudged evidence, ignored witnesses, was led by the nose by Allen Dulles, was basically following LBJ's hysterical arm twisting "lone gunman" scenario, etc. While hopes were greatly raised by the House subcommittee investigation into the murder, like so many aspects of this story, it was a disappointment and a big let down for die hard critics of the W.C. report. What they basically came away with is that there was most likely a conspiracy. Summers takes this as a prime marker and continually refers back to this conclusion, over and over again.

His attempt to try and figure out who Oswald really was is fascinating to read. We can groan along with him in our mutual and collective frustration; we still don't know what he was all about, who ran him, what were his motivations, how many groups did he tip his hat to or cooperate with, etc. Frankly, I am deeply skeptical about his wife Marina. Considering how ultra odd it would have been to have met a 'true' American Marine defector in Soviet Russia in the 1950's, it is odd how fast they hooked up and were soon married. Almost every single thing you thought you knew about Oswald in Russia.....Summers shows how much of that tableaux is covered in layers of smoke, dark lights and mirages. Nothing is clear. And he was so young and fairly bright.

A theme that is worth considering and Summers touches on it is the connections between James J. Angleton and Oswald. Years later the current top researchers (for example Lisa Pease) are digging up evidence that ties these two together in a strong orbit. Summers is as unsure as the rest of us who ran Oswald and it could have been several hubs all at the same time. His books subtext is that perhaps Oswald was manipulated by various elements, which would include CIA and Military Intelligence and counter intelligence.

It's a great story, and sad to say that JFK's murder overshadowed his accomplishments; at least in the memory this is often the case. It is passing strange that almost no one ever heard Oswald say a bad thing about JFK. One day, in the fullness of time, when more documents are released from the National Archives in Washington and College Park, Maryland.....we will have an even sharper understanding about the role of the CIA, FBI, counter-intelligence, the MOB, Jimmy Hoffa, General Walker, LBJ, the foaming at the mouth Anti-Castro groups in Miami, the big oil money in Texas, the Federal Reserve, and several more key people and groups. JFK's death has roots in all of these side shows and more. Summers book is a superb introduction into the labyrinth that still drives us crazy.

A fine overview of the case

The original 1980 edition and revised 1989 edition are hard to find but worth tracking down. Investigative author and BBC reporter Summers raises many questions and is able to answer very few of them. For those not able to accept living with such uncertainty, there is the cocoon-like security blanket of the official story and its defenders like Posner and Bugliosi. For the rest of us, we know there will be always be mysteries in this case that we may never find the solutions to.

Summers writes: "As I did more and more work on this [the JFK assassination] I became increasingly more ashamed for my mainstream American colleagues...In 1978 I went to Dallas, 15 years after the assassination, knocking on doors of witnesses. My preamble would be 'I'm sure you spoke to everyone back in 1963,' and the response would be, much to my surprise, 'No. Where have you been all these years?' The media and in some cases law enforcement, had never spoken to them." "The key targets of suspicion can now be distilled to three - members of the Mafia, American intelligence personnel, and anti-Castro activists...Nobody I spoke to on the Assassinations Committee...felt that the case had yet been exhaustively investigated. All agree that lack of time and funds forced the Committee to leave important research unfinished."
