Review of Elements of Power System Analysis

This has been the bible of electrical power systems for the past 44 years so don't leave home without it ! It is a classic well-written textbook that stresses the important fundmantals of power system analysis with clarity that I have not seen in any other power book. Although other books may be fatter and contain more details, this book remains the best by wisely avoiding falling in the often tempting trap of computational details of numerical techniques and remains faithful to the basic principles. The chapters are just of the right length with many examples and clear explanations. It feels so good for the student and the professor to cover each chapter in about a week. I have used this book as a student and as an instructor and my recommendation is this: stick with this original classic and avoid the imitations! You will never regret it !

the bible of power systems!

Oh babe, this book is way beyond the words to describe.. The power system bible, U wont find any other good book that explains the complexity of power system flow, faults, TL modelin per units, power stability... than this book. I loved The way how he explained the zero sequence of different power system elements. Great!!!

One of the best books written on the subject of Power System analysis. This book has a very good approach to power system problems with many solved examples and many more problems at the end of each chapter. I recommend anyone taking the P.E. exam to have this book as a reference for Power System problems.

Middle-to-low quality book for newbies searching for an easy staring point on the transformers' field

The book contain some insight on power transformers and reactors but most of its content can be found, in more detailed explanation, on other sources. For sure it gives at least a list of every aspect in the industry (even air core reactors are mentioned, which are usually left out) but more often then not in a very superficial and not meaningful way; also, the basic information is repeated several times in different chapters. One time would be enough and would have spared some space for some more basic analysis of the listed aspects.

Some examples:
Short-circuit inductance calculation doesn't mention rogowsky coefficient (!!!)
Chapter 24 (short-circuit) is pointless (e.g.: you have to correctly design the pressure ring, the frame, etc... without giving any any formula or even design parameters)
Final chapters (25 and above) are meaningless.

Anyway the quality is quite constant (on the low end) throughout most of the chapters thanks to the editing team but some chapters suffers from more "dumbed down" source material then others (the do/no not list of the bushing chapter seems directly addressed at low skilled workers in a third world country, not to the reader of a engineering book...). Some parts are more of an advertising for BHEL but it may be understood as it's sold from them (same can be said on "Short-circuit strength of power transformers" by Giorgio Bertagnolli on ABB favor).
Pictures are very low quality and definitely not significant to add any kind of value.

If you are looking for a good book on transformers there are better options like "Transformer Engineering: Design, Technology, and Diagnostics" by S.V. Kulkarni, S.A. Khaparde or "Transformer Design Principles: With Applications to Core-Form Power Transformers" by M. Del Vecchio et al.

unless your donald trump

i wouldn't waste your money on this book. The only way i can describe it is useless. Unless you plan on starting a donald trump sized electrical business with 500 employees. This book is all about running a huge business and has about one reference to the electrical field in it. Anyone starting an electrical contracting business isn't gonna start anywhere within the scope of this book.

Written for a graduate or possibly senior level first organic course in synthesis/reactions for students in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or pharmacy, "Organic Synthesis" provides in one text a review of basic techniques and tools of organic chemistry as well as a thorough introduction to the synthesis process. The focus of the book is on familiarizing the student with the reactions necessary for synthesis, identifying and developing the strategies and methods of doing synthesis as well as developing the mental processes which must be used in planning and executing a synthesis, and then doing the synthesis. The text includes a unique chapter containing total synthesis done by students along with instructor commentaries as examples of approaches and potential pitfalls to synthesis. Written so that chapters may be used independently for maximum flexibility, the text has two major parts: chapters 2-7 cover functional and protecting groups and chapters 8-9, 11-13 cover carbon bonds. Chapter 1 introduces three fundamental themes found in modern synthetic organic chemistry that are used throughout the text: disconnection, stereochemistry and conformation control. Chapters 2-5 provide a review of the basic principles and tools of organic chemistry with a focus on those reaction types necessary for synthesis, while chapter 6 describes stereochemistry and conformation as applied to organic synthesis. Chapter 10 provides a novel approach to teaching synthesis. Coming after the student has had some introduction to synthesis processes and developed some tools (Chapters 8-9), it provides the student with an overview of the various strategies and ways of doing syntheses, rather than have the student simply read or work through a list of synthesis after synthesis. Chapter 14 contains several total syntheses done by students, along with instructor commentary, as examples of approaches and potential pitfalls. Approximately 40 class-tested and evaluated homework problems accompany each chapter, many with references in the literature to actual experiments.

If you buy the 1994 edition be sure to download from the author the hundreds of corrections. There are still many more that he does not list. In spite of this I find it is a very useful book, particularly the portions dealing with organoboranes, oxidation and reductions.

This book is second only to March

It's amazing to me that Smith is able to gather so many resources and consolidate them into one place. Everything is there. Reagents. Cross references to books that deal only in reagents, and so on and so on.
Often, one sees textbooks that give reactions and simply assume that they will work without citing a reference where someone has actually gone through the trouble to see if the reaction really will work. (This, I have found, is the quickest way to waste time in the lab. The easier it is to locate a protocol, the higher your lab productivity is.)
It's also good to see that he's taken the time and trouble to whittle away some of the pretty colors that a lot of books put in in order to try to draw the reader's attention away from the glaring lack of substance.
This book may, in the next few years, supercede the March text because a good number of his references are from within the past 5 years (50%, I believe), and it is such that if you are working in the lab and need to find *that* particular reference, then you can easily go and look it up.

An excellent advanced text.

The 2/e is a comprehensive look at modern methods in organic synthesis.
Smith avoids the trend, common in many books, of using too many colors and myriad worthless illustrations. He instead provides a clean, easy to read volume for the advanced undergraduate or graduate organic student.
The references at the end of each chapter are outstanding. There are often in excess of 75 citations per chapter, readily allowing further study.
I would like to respond to the criticism of some reviewers regarding typographical errors. The 2/e does seem to be much better than the 1/e in this regard. Also the author maintains a well documented list of typos on his website.
All in all, this book is easily the rival of Carey & Sundberg's Part B and well worth the investment for any organic/pharm chemists out there.

Too many mistakes

Don't think you can study this and pass the CET. As it says on the cover, it is a study -guide-. The CET Journeyman requires that you have several years working in the field and the Associates you should have already been studying, so you should only require a review.

That said, this book's worth as a review is seriously marred by all the mistakes. I'm not talking typos, I mean full blown wrong answers marked as correct.

My copy has a huge number of bookmarks where I've marked mistakes in the text and in the sample questions. Some of the sample questions in the chapters have incorrect answers and/or bad explanations, and there are incorrect answers in the end-of-chapter questions. Some don't even have a choice that is correct, some have the wrong answer marked, some have a nonsensical schematic that can't work.

Here is an example:

In microprocessor language, the number 65,536 is called 64K (64,000). Usually a person studying this for the first time wants to know why they call it 64K, instead of 65,536. We don't really know the answer, but it probably goes back to the time when these types of memories were first being used. The manufacturer of the memories only guaranteed so many possibilities out of the total. In other words, if you were buying a memory that was supposed to be able to go to information at 65,536 addresses, you might only get 64,000. So, they used a lower number that they were willing to guarantee.

Wow. The "k" for "kilo" should be lower case, but that pales next to the astounding ignorance of the paragraph. Any student of binary math or computers knows that when talking computers, we call a kB 1024B because that is 2^10, and -that- is why by convention we say 64k as shorthand for 65,536 when speaking of computer memory or other storage. Same with Mega and Giga, Mega is KiloKilo or 1024x1024, or 2^10 x 2^10 = 2^20 = 1,048,576 and for Giga it is KiloKiloKilo or 2^30 = 1,073,741,824.

Derp.

I worry about students studying for their associates becoming confused about what they know, based on the mistakes in this book. It is the 4th Edition, they should have been corrected by now.

I wrote to Tab Books to see if they were interested in fixing the mistakes, I've heard nothing back.

Wrong - Wrong - Wrong - Wrong - Wrong !

This book is a [GOOD] example of what a [BAD] Test Prep book for Electronics Technician would resemble. The diagrams are overly simplistic, the explanatory text is subpar in quality, For these reasons, I would [NOT] recommend that you purchase this book. Instead ,get a copy of one of Floyds EXCELLENT Electronics Texts' {{{Conventional Current Version }}} and STUDY HARD. You WILL do well on ANY Cetification Test for Electronics Technical work. Caveat Emptor ! Peace. ;-)

Malcolm Steinberg , P.E., is an internationally recognized lecturer and expert on expansive soils. The director of an El Paso consulting firm that specializes in soils and foundation engineering, he also directs the American Society of Chemical Engineers' District 15. For nearly 40 years, he was an engineer with the Texas Highway Department. This is his first book.

This is a very appropriate book for the construction series of McGraw Hill, in that it not only reads well but also explains many items related to geomembranes and the expansive soils in a simple language without any equations.
As a Civil Engineer, but not in the field of geotechnical engineering, it was refreshing for this reviewer to read a book on the subject after a long experience in concrete and structural engineering that may be impacted on all the world's continents by these expansive soils. I enjoyed it very much from the practical perspective rather than theoretical one and was very much impressed with the contents.
As an academician teaching for over 25 years, I enjoyed the simple style of writing by Mr. Steinberg and would recommend it as a supplemental reading for a Senior, who wants to get overall information on expansive soil as well as the geomembranes and their applications. Particular joy was to see a chapter on Do's and Don'ts, which will be useful for younger engineers. I wish we had such a book during our undergraduate studies. As a consulting engineer, I liked this book since it provides practical solutions using geomembranes to control expansive soils.
In India, this type of soil has been known as Black Cotton soil, characteristic for its excellent assistance to growing one of the best cottons in the world, but not good for constructing roads due to its properties in wet conditions. It was refreshing to know that it can be used in constructing roadways and other structures as well with proper techniques.
In short, I am happy to see Mr. Steinberg's persistence and a thorough follow up on this venture and producing such a quality book.

Disappointed with Content and Depth

This book is informative for one wanting a very general introduction to the subject of moisture barriers. The information primarily focuses on highway applications with only a cursory look at use for building foundations.

I was disappointed that an internationally known expert (stated on the rear cover) imparts relatively little information that can be used by practicing engineers. The depth of the information is shallow for a professional book if intended to be used by geotechnical engineers (who else would design geomembrane moisture barriers?). If you already have any working knowledge of the subject of expansive soils, you can read through the book in one setting. Little of the information presented is from the author's own work, and there's not much discussion to help one learn from the work presented by others. Mr. Steinberg does provide lengthy lists of references, which is the book's greatest strength, but you may have a hard time finding many of them.

As a practicing geotechnical engineer and one well versed on expansive soil issues, I can only recommend this book if you know nothing else about moisture barriers and don't want to design them. You would be better served by acquiring some of the references or others available from ASCE and various highway research organizations. Unfortunately, there are few geotechnical textbooks that even address moisture barriers.

Very good reference book for a student, professor/consultant

About the Author
Dominick Salvatore is Professor of Economics and Business at Fordham University. He was chairman of the New York Academy of Sciences and consultant to the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, the United Nations in New York, and various multinational banks and corporations. Professor Salvatore is the author of 38 books, among which are: Microeconomics Theory and Applications (5th ed., 2004) and International Economics (8th ed., 2004), Financial Economics in the New Global Economy (2004), Protectionism and World Welfare (1993), and The Japanese Competitive Challenge and the U.S. Response (1990). He has also written Schaum¿s Outlines in Microeconomics, International Economics, and Statistics and Econometrics. Professor Salvatore is the editor of the Handbook Series in Economics for the Greenwood Press. He is the co-editor of the Journal of Policy Modeling and Open Economies Review, and associate editor of the American Economist. His research has been published in more than 100 journal articles in leading business and economics journals and presented at numerous national and international conferences.

Fairly Useful Refresher for a Graduate Level Student.

To be fair to the true value of the book, I would like to say that this book is a very useful, concise and all-round assortment of all the pre-existing economic concepts and techniques in their simplest and the most intuition-friendly form.
An undergraduate reader might find it a little challenging, but for a graduate level reader already seasoned in every aspect of economics, this would not only be an easy reading, but a very clear and insightful guide to economic rationale behind the theories they had taken for granted w/o giving its practical application much thought.
The beauty of this book for a graduate student, I think, is not in the treatment of highly advanced and feindishly complicated top of the line economic theories, but in the simple and insightful plain-langauge treatment of all the technical aspects of economics commonly and conventionally practiced in the economics discipline.
The value of this book for an undergraduate student majoring in economics or business may not be immediately evident w/o working hard at it, but rather would probably be appreciated a lot later when they are more comfortable w/ matrix algebra, calculus and econometrics.
Overall I rate this book a rare piece that balances well in the middle of the road between both graduate and undergraduate level audiences.

Very complex with overlapping ideas

I am currently using the book for a managerial economics class and find the information confusing . Certainly a review of supply and demand (chapter 3) and its application of middle level managers is crucial and should have been placed before optimizing techniques (chapter 2). The assumption is the student or reader has just finished an introduction economics course and all the information is still fresh in the mind. Personally, I review all principles in this book with basic economic principles for a much clearer understanding of the topics.

Excellant prep for licensing exam

In addition to providing many questions (many of which appeared on my licensing exam), this book gives an excellent overview of high pressure boiler operation. This is probably the best companion piece to another text booknow. It's not terribly in depth, what I did was read a text book then read this as a supplement before my exam. Excellent reference for Stationary Engineer's Exam

This guide concisely explains the basics of boiler operation, and includes around 400 practice questions. It is more useful than any books I could find at the library. Worth the price. After using this as my primarry study guide, I passed the Stationary Engineer's exam. Some of the information seems outdated, but that's what was on the exam.

Gujarati's Basic Econometrics remains the best in a crowded field.

When students and friends ask me for the "best" econometrics book, I always point them to Gujarati's Basic Econometrics. His third edition is a treasure, and many other "advanced" econometrics books have been left unused because of pointless obfuscation that United States Military Academy Professor Gujarati avoids. Rather, this is an excellent text from start to finish: from single variable regression analysis through "Relaxing the Assumptions of the Classical Model" and heteroskedasticity, through Leamer and Hendry, dummy variables, simultaneous-equation models, and finally time series models.

In finance, time series models are the big Kahuna, and I suppose there are specialized texts that approach Gujarati's clarity. But I haven't found them. Instead, when I'm bogged down I often find myself returning to his basics here (Durbin-Watson, AR, MA, and ARIMA, Box-Jenkins, etc.).

This fourth edition is a welcome update with extensions of the ARIMA and ARCH universe culled from academic literature and summarized with the clarity of students in mind.

Gujarati's Basic Econometrics remains the best in a crowded field.

Gujarati remains the best and most comprehensive textbook of econometrics for both the neophyte and the applied practitioner looking to refresh the theoretical basis of econometric methods. Elementary statistics, as well as more advanced results, are handsomely covered in appendices, while the text focuses on a straight forward, no nonsense explanation of the theory, its pitfalls, and important real world applications. The data CD is a handy addition over the earliest editions.
Highly recommended.
