Great for AB users

I have used this text in our PLC class for three years. I really like that it is specific to Allan Bradley products. The workbook that goes with this text has programming assignments to reinforce the concepts. As I train on AB SLC500s exclusively, it is almost ideal. I say almost becaue there are many references to obsolete instructions used with a PLC no longer manufactured. It is due for a new edition. But until then, it remains a very good text to teach from, or if you simply want to know more about the subject.

Good reference but dated

Not a bad reference for most users. It is a little basic and some of the info is dated. It's a little weak in more advanced areas like indiredt addressing, use and construction of subroutines, but otherwise this is a good book to keep in a general library for technicians responsible for supporting PLC based systems.

Excellent text for beginner students.

The text used in conjunction with the accompanny study guide were required text for an automation and control class. No errors noted, very easy and comprehensive reading. An excellent reference manual. One of the best required text books I have used.

Topics in the first section include probability distributions and densities, random variables and vectors, expectations, covariance, correlations, functions of random variables and vectors, and conditional distributions and densities. In this third edition of the text, the second half of the book has been substantially updated and expanded to include new or revised discussions of the following topics: mean square estimation, likelihood tests, maximum entropy methods, Monte Carlo techniques, spectral representations and estimation, sampling theory, bispectra and system identification, cyclostationary processes, deterministic signals in noise, and the Wiener and Kalman filters. Probability, Random Variables, and Stochastic Processes covers a remarkable density of material and the clarity of both presentation and notation make this book invaluable as a text and a reference.

About the Author
S. Unnikrishna Pillai is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Polytechnic Institute of NYU in Brooklyn, New York. His research interests include radar signal processing, blind identification, spectrum estimation, data recovery and wavform diversity. Dr. Pillai is the author of Array Signal Processign and co-author of Spectrum Estimation and system Identification, Prof. Papoulis' Probability, Random Variables and Stochastic processes (Fourth edition), and Space Based Radar - Theory & Applications.

Found no substitute for a difficult subject

When readers and students ask to me for a useable book for nonmathematicians to get into probability (or a probabilistic approach to statistics), before embarking into deeper problems, I suggest this book by the Late A. Papoulis. I even recommend it to mathematicians as their training often tends to make them spend too much time on limit theorems and very little on the actual "plumbing".
The treatment has no measure theory, cuts to the chase, and can be used as a desk reference. If you want measure theory, go spend some time reading Billingsley. A deep understanding of measure theory is not necessary for scientific and engineering applications; it is not necessary for those who do not want to work on theorems and technical proofs.
I've notice a few complaints in the comments section by people who felt frustrated by the treatment: do not pay attention to them. Ignore them. It the subject itself that is difficult, not this book. The book, in fact, is admirable and comprehensive given the current state of the art.
I am using this book as a benchmark while writing my own, but more advanced, textbook (on errors in use of statistical models). Anything derived and presented in Papoulis, I can skip. And when students ask me what they need as pre-requisite to attend my class or read my book, my answer is: Papoulis if you are a scientist, Varadhan if you are more abstract.

Good book with the help of a good instructor

After reading almost all reviews, I actually think I agree with almost all including the ones that say it is not a book for beginners and ones that say that it is a great book written by a very knowledgeable author. As a student who just completed a course in this subject with this book as the text, here is what I would like to say:
1. My instructor re-ordered some of the content of the text for his course. It seemed necessary to understand certain concepts.
2. As one of the previous reviews mentioned, some of the important aspects of probability theory were hidden in problems, these were brought out by the instructor either as homeworks or as part of lecture notes and explained. This also means that it is not enough to just read this text and understand the examples. It is almost as important to go through the problems to get the complete picture
3. All in all I liked the book but I sure would not have liked it as much if I did not have a good instructor to go with it. Definitely not a self-study book.

great book in the classical textbook sense

i would like to again point out that while this book is excellent as a reference, it's not very good to read cover-to-cover. Papoulis is extremely knowledgeable in this area, and this book is, in fact, the FIRST EVER book of stochastic/random variables and processes written for the engineers. unfortunately, despite the excellent material, the presentation and coverage is sometimes hard to follow, and hides the true gem in this book.

One of the Finest in its Genre

This text is quite a gem. The chapters do not need to be studied sequentially, as the authors wrote
so as to create each chapter as independent from the others as possible. Within chapters, the separate sections
are also somewhat independent. The pace in each chapter starts slowly and simply, and then quickens
to more advanced material. Emphasis is placed on underlying principles throughout. Problem sets are also creatively
arranged,from the simple progressing to more advanced. Highlights include a beautiful first chapter on sequences and series,
chapter two on nonlinear differential equations is a treat, and chapter six on vector field theory is crystal clear.
An appendix compares Riemann to Lebesgue Integration in a simple manner. Each Chapter in this text is a delight.
I would be remiss if I did not single out the Chapter Seven, pertaining to Partial Differential Equations: Simply put, one
of the best single-chapter introductions to be encountered. D'Alambert's formula derived, Laplace and Dirichlet problems
discussed, Solutions by Integrals Transforms and Green's Functions expounded with the utmost of clarity (All in 100 Pages).
Merely a thorough foundation of calculus is prerequisite.

Classical Applied Mathematics Text

I have this text (and its like new) from back in my University days. Although not a prescribed textbook it always got me out of trouble in advanced engineering maths. Its a classical text on Applied Mathematics. Along with Boas Mathematical methods in the Physical Sciences I give them both 5 stars.

Still a classic

I ordered a new copy of this book after losing my original from university days. I have found it occasionally invaluable in engineering for twenty years - basically "everything you ever wanted to know about math" in a relatively compact text, without being one of those huge and awful multi-author collection "handbooks". The fact that it is still in print from the 1960's bears out that I am not the only one with this opinion.

Pure Excellence

This book presents an excellent comprehensive introduction into the subject "Functional Analysis" which enables the reader to pursue further reading into specialized areas of the field. The style is well-balanced: not too much detail such that the reader does not get bored and overwhelmed with technicalities, little facts and examples; but full proofs with enough detail to verify them without additional resources (i.e., other books) except, perhaps, the little piece of paper on the side for checking, e.g., an algebraic identity. In my private opinion as a professional mathematician, this is the best math book ever written, at least among those which I have seen.

Outstanding

Hardly can I find words to highlight the goodness of this book. As mentioned by other readers ,it provides elegant, direct and powerfool proofs of the three theorems which constitute the cornserstones of functional analysis (Hanh-Banach, Banach-Steinhaus and Open mapping). These theorems are, in addition, studied in their most general context, namely topological vector spaces.

Specially appealing is its treatment of distributions' theory. It is, as far as I know, the only text which start by defining the rigurous topology on the set of test functions and then obtains the convergence and continuity of functionals (distributions) in terms of this topolgy, which is, indeed, the only way to present and gain insight into these concepts and to reach some results such as completness. In doing otherwise one risk definitions can emerge as artificial and rather arbitrary.

It is, without any doubt, a must have book for those with interest in pure mathematics as well as for those who, eventually, realize that the only way to dominate their area is saling through mathematics.

The proofs are meticulous even when they are short

This is a well-written book that covers an astoundingly large number of ideas. Some of the proofs Rudin gives demand verifications he does not give, but it is apparent to the reader what needs to be checked and if you do check these things you will not find technicalities that Rudin ignored. (Often experienced mathematicians omit parts of proofs they consider standard and in fact if we fully work out the proof we see that what was written is logically out of order, e.g. statements P and then Q are made when in fact Q needs to be established first to prove P, and therefore rightly frustrates a reader.)

The first three chapters are on topological vector spaces generally and locally convex spaces in particular. These structures are not part of the standard graduate course in functional analysis, which deals only with Banach spaces and Hilbert spaces and may give a uselessly specialized proof of the spectral theorem merely for bounded self-adjoint compact operators, while in fact what one genuinely needs the spectral theorem for is unbounded self-adjoint operators (which Rudin gives in Chapter 13). Moreover, it is impossible even to talk rigorously about distributions without the machinery of locally convex spaces and Fréchet spaces; in a course on partial differential equations it is common to avoid talking about what it means to say that a distribution is continuous, or to give an inadequate and ad-hoc explanation involving sequences of test functions.

Aside from the chapters on topological vector spaces and locally convex spaces, another glory of this book are the chapters on distributions, tempered distributions, and linear partial differential operators. The proof of Sobolev's lemma (Theorem 7.25) is meticulous. In the chapter on linear partial differential operators, the Malgrange-Ehrenpreis theorem and the elliptic regularity theorem are proved, and I think that this single chapter would teach one more about how to think about partial differential equations than Lawrence Evans' unwieldy monograph.

There is even a chapter on Tauberian theory, which gives probably the most structural proof of the prime number theorem that exists.

The rest of the book is on Banach algebras, in particular the Gelfand transform, and operators on Hilbert spaces. The spectral theorem is proved for unbounded normal operators in a Hilbert space, and results about strongly continuous one-parameter semigroups are proved, like the Hille-Yosida theorem.

The biggest requirement to use this book is first to know measure theory, both abstract measures and Borel measures. The next biggest requirement is the Cauchy integral formula from complex analysis. For both of these, it would be useful to have Rudin's "Real and Complex Analysis" on your desk while you read this book.

Fabulous (but demanding!) classic with entertaining asides

This book is a famous classic. The commentaries on historically important problems and the mathematicians who solved them are fascinating and entertaining and fun reading even for non-mathematicians. For example, someone studying the history of science would gain much from reading through them and could use the book as a shelf reference. The mathematical presentation is demanding, but if you get through it you'll definitely have achieved something. WARNING: A professor tells me that the problems in this book include many that would stump most professors! This book is not suitable as a universal textbook. But there are also many problems that ordinary students will be able to do.

An absolute gem of textbook!

I've taught upper division students from this book (and the first edition) 5-6 times for over a decade. I remain impressed by the broad range of topics from which the teacher and reader can select. As with his excellent calculus textbook, the author tries to show students how mathematics is a human activity, a subject that developed in response to actual needs and which is still lively and developing. No part of mathematics illustrates this development better than the topic of differential equations, which was invented to solve pressing problems in astronomy. One example: In Newton's time, accurate location of position on the open seas was an unsolved problem, crucial to commerce. New techniques from differential equations led to the ready calculation of tables which, together with the invention of Harrison's sea-going chronometer, effectively solved the navigation problem. Differential equations lie at the core of the physical sciences and engineering and are proving increasingly valuable in biology and medicine. Simmons' book will not appeal to readers who want merely recipes with examples of their use. Such readers might prefer the excellent books from the Schaum's Outline Series. Those readers who want to see vital mathematics well presented, those readers who think that mathematics stops at trigonomerty or the calculus, those readers who want to use differential equations intelligently, and those readers who just like a cracking good mathematics story should get a copy of Simmons' book and read.

Still a great book

I first encountred the first edition of this book in 1971 when attending College in Southern California. I started using the 4th edition in 1981 when I began instructing a college class on radio Communications. I have used Shrader ever since. The reason I use Shrader's book is because the book is accurate. Other books I have attempted to use have had errors in formulas and some information was not quite clear for the students. Shrader covers many subjects with a good basic explaination of circuits and systems. Shrader not only has a good understanding of the subject material he is able to relate the information without confusion.

Since you can't "search inside this book" on Amazon, I wanted to make people aware that this book is written at the community college/vocational school/electronics technician level. In other words, after the basics on components & resonant circuits, the text describes various communication systems at a qualitative level and attempts to educate people on, e.g., how tweaking component values in a transmitter will influence the end results. This is quite valuable (and something that someone who learns "a bunch of formulas" from a more advanced book may not have a good grasp on), but you will need some of those more advanced books (and a corresponding mathematical background) if you find yourself in a traditional college or university engineering program. E.g., you won't find a derivation of how a sine wave input to a frequency modulator produces a sum of Bessel functions in the output spectrum, derivation of the large scale gain of a transistor amplifier based on its non-linear behavior, there's no usage of phasors, convolution, LaPlace transforms, etc.

Looking at it the other way around -- people from traditional four year programs will find themselves gaining value from exposure to different communication system devices & architectures that time usually doesn't permit mention of in their formal education, as well as an emphasis on knowing what to expect from and how to troubleshoot existing system. For instance, Shrader has plenty to say about tubes -- enough that you could build an OK amplifier out of them --, whereas many 4 year undergraduate programs only mention them in passing since their usage is so uncommon today. Similarly, Shrader will tell you how to align the various sections of a superheterodyne radio, whereas the traditional 4 year program will just teach you how to calculate the exact (unobtainable in practice) component values needed to achieve perfect alignment.

Excellent text from basic electricity to advanced circuits.

I was introduced to this book by a fellow satellite communications tech in the Army about 12 years ago. Although I had received extensive training, before and after joining the Army, I found that this book was able to fill in many of my knowledge gaps; particularly in the area of transmitter design and modulation techniques. The author starts with the very basics of AC / DC then progresses chapter by chapter into advanced communications techniques. Almost all of the circuits are solved or modeled algebraically instead of using more advanced integration / differentiation formulas. Therefore, the text can be followed by anyone with at least a high school math background. The book that I had was an older edition with a lot of vacuum tube theory (most of us will never see a vacuum tube outside of a CRT). If there had been less tube and more solid state text, I would have given this book 5 instead of 4 stars. Overall, highly recommended. A good buy!

It enables to understand difficult and key concepts well

When the publisher/author requested me to be a beta test site for the book about 2 years back, I thought the book written by some one who is at U of Wisconsin, written papers in logic programming would not be suitable for RMIT and gave a diplomatic reason to the author when he probed further by email. When the book was released in Australia a few months back we adopted it immediately for our 3rd year under grad. students although the book was expected to arrive a few days late for start of classes. I like the way the material is presented - keeping the practical implication/real life application in mind all the time, eg. section 5.7, 5.8 on B-trees(I rarely find these practical aspects mentioned in other sources). Query processing topics in Chap 12, 13 are presented as practical material which keeps the students interest rather than making it boring. The best I have liked so far is the coverage of concurrency control, transaction processing issues in Chap 17, 18. All the things are well tied together. Material is presented in the order that makes user understand the material - serializability is introduced right at the beginning (as against after a whole lot of definitions and theorems). Lot of insignificant(not the right word) material is made brief such as material in Section 17.8. The above topics I have read in detail and covered in the lectures. I have browsed through data mining, oodb, dist. dbs chapters and like the coverage and will be covering in lectures in the next few weeks. The complete solutions available online well complements the text material. I will have more detailed comments at the end of the semester. I do have a number of minor suggestions which is better communicated to the author. The best sentence is the one acknowledging his brother!

A Practical Review of Database Management Systems

I have read quite a few books about Database Management Systems in the market. I have worked for many leading companies to build large-scale high-performance trading engine systems for stock exchanges, such as Pacific Exchange, the national third largest, NASDAQ Stock Market, the national second largest, commodities exchanges, and Internet auction engine, and global company rating search engines. This book is the first one that systematically discusses the internal architecture and physical structure of DBMS. I found this book is very detail-oriented, practical, and accompanied by hands-on projects on the Internet. After I reviewed carefully this book, I like it full of details about the internal architecture and physical structure of DBMS, a lot of interesting exercises following each chapter. It's a good mix of database theory and practice.
I always wanted to introduce the internals of DBMS, but could not find an easy way to do all the information once in one place. This book gave me some useful hints to introduce DBMS for anyone interested in knowing how a DBMS actually works. Professor Raghu Ramakrishnan is well known for educational software. I have used CORAL(A Deductive Database from UW) and expected to find technically rich material in this book, and I was not disappointed. Reading the source code of Microbase (a stripped down version of Minibase) proved very interesting, especially the parser and optimizer parts.
This book makes readers to understand difficult but important concepts easier and deeper when they can put their hands on the real database, of course a smaller one, to modify, change, and run it. This kind iteration can be repeated again and again if the reader likes when she or he is the owner of the real database.

The author and I exchanged email during the first a few months when his book was released. After the book was released two years ago, I saw that a lot of colleges overwhelmingly adopted it immediately for their undergraduate and graduate courses. I like the way the material is presented - keeping the practical implication, real life application in mind all the time, e.g. section 5.7, 5.8 on B-trees, these practical aspects are rarely mentioned in other sources outside searching and sorting field. Query processing topics in Chapter 12, Chapter13 are presented as practical material that keeps the presentation of material interesting rather than making it boring. The best I have liked so far is the coverage of concurrency control, transaction-processing issues in Chapter 17, and Chapter 18. All the things are well tied together. Material is presented in the order that makes user understand the material easier- serializability is introduced right at the beginning, as well as after a whole lot of definitions and theorems. Lot of "not-so-significant" material is made brief such as material in Section 17.8. The above topics I have read are discussed in detail. The complete solutions also available online well complements the text material.
In some sense, this book is not for novices. It provides a good whole picture of basic introduction of DBMS, rather than an average introductory textbook. I do have a number of minor suggestions, which is already communicated to the author. A number of examples in this book are in words, not in pictures. Text is somehow not structured perfectly; key words are not highlighted with bold font as you'd expected. You have to do your own work. Examples, some of them, are explained sometimes too briefly. Problems and especially solutions to the problems (on the author's web site) are very good, but they may give some lazier professors a source to copy everything to teach their students. Students may try to access or break the security to access the solutions. This book is not, in some sense, for novices; you'll have to invest a lot of time to understand the subject and sometimes what was implied by the author.
I was a little unsatisfied on the lack of depth in certain areas, i.e. buffer management, indexing schemes. B-Trees and Hashing described but not explained thoroughly. Two hashing schemes discussed but neither provided enough information to implement without first solving some hard problems. More information on various locking schemes would be nice. Some areas need revision or reorganization in its future editions, such as referring to terms and concepts before they are introduced; some phrases need further polishing, and there are still some typographic errors. In some discussion, it can make it plainer to be understood. Chapter 9, SQL: THE QUERY LANGUAGE may be discussed in more depth in the next editions.
If you teach a database management course in an "high-end" under graduate or graduate program, I suggest that you take a close look into this book. It provides a comprehensive and well-balanced selection of topics (technical, theoretical, and practical), detailed writing, and a clear presentation in some sense. This book is the most detailed one about the implementation of database architecture and internal structure. From what I've seen thus far, it's probably one of the best general-purpose database management textbooks in the market.
I believe some people will be able to use materials in their work based on the information in this book.
All in all, I was quite satisfied with this book as a first book for hands-on Database Management Systems study.

Not a good book ! PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!

I was forced to buy this book as my instructor follows this book in his graduate level database management class. I was really disappointed after "studying" this book. I do not know the expertise level of the author in database management but he does not know how to explain different aspects of database management systems. I think he feels obligated to use complex sentences in his book to explain various topics. Probably he does not know that in the scientific world using simple sentences are more norm than fashion. After reading some of the topics, I was really lost. For eg. on normalization the author does not even talk about first normal, second normal form but starts from the BCNF. The chapters on tree structured indexing and hash-based indexing are horrible. While reading these chapters, there were times, when I was totally confused and wondered what exactly the author was trying to convey. I would suggest to author to read the book "Modern Database Management" by McFadden, Hoffer and Prescott in order to "learn" how to write a book and how to explain topics in a simpler way. I am really disppointed with the author. I will not recommend any computer science students to buy this book for reference and would not recommend instructors to follow this book in their classes. Buying this book was a waste of money.

Michigan's Dr. Shigley Rules !!!

One of the Best Machining Reference Books you will ever have. I am 56 and have been in the engineering profession for 32 years now. When I took this course in machine design at Vanderbilt in the spring of 1981 (it was Shigley's 3rd edition textbook) it was very fast paced by lecture and all theoretical. It would have been much better had the professor showed us examples of fasteners, types of metals, pinions, bull gears, drive shafts, planetary gear systems, fatigue damage, corrosion damage, bearing types etc. but this wasn't the case. No, it was all theoretical and we had lots of problems to solve in an effort to absorb some of the theories and applications of machine design. We raced through the chapters and I am convinced the pace was too fast to really retain much. Looking back it was like running a race and not much went into the long-term memory except Dr. Shigley laid it all out in a wonderful format.

If I was teaching this course I would have a couple of tables of parts, different types of materials and examples of corrosion, spalling and fatigue that students could review at their leisure after class to get acquainted with the conditions, configurations and concepts. Using only the textbook as your guide is limiting; it is too abstract. There is a better way to understand the whole gamut of mechanical concepts and go beyond the abstract notions and theories. Seeing examples first hand reinforces the actual concepts into the mind so much better. Nothing beats getting the hands to touch, grasp and see first-hand actual examples of what is described in the machining design textbook.

If you work in a machine shop or even better an aerospace transmission plant on the production floor or as an engineering designer you will need this book to understand many concepts such as tolerance stack-ups, clearance fits, interference fits, dimensioning, tolerancing and failure prevention. It is extremely well written. This book is also a great example of technical writing. It is all business and to the point and you would expect from world renown authors such as Drs' Shigley and Mischke.

Also there is good information on heat treatment and what materials are the best choice for what application. Do you need high strength, light weight and resistance to corrosion ? - you choice would probably be Ti 6Al-4V titanium. Do you need extremely high strength and impact resistance ? then you might choose Carburized 9310 or X53 Alloy Steel. You need an aluminum that is also weldable ? Then you might choose 5000 series aluminum. Do you need high strength aluminum and you don't need it to be weldable then go with 7075 or 7050 solution heat treated aluminum. There are many many choices and they all involve trade-offs. A good designer should know what are the best applications of materials for design goals. In the back of the book in the later chapters you will be shown the various gear type systems such as spur, helical, spiral bevel, worm and hypoid. Design is always compromise in the effort to satisfy the customer wants and the design requirements while building a cost effective and safe part. It is an art as well as a science.

Don't let the high price of this textbook dissuade you and for gosh sakes don't sell this book after you graduate from engineering school. You will need this for your technical library that you will expand on. Good luck on your engineering career !

Several steps down from previous editions

This book has some good information in it for designers, but it makes things more complicated than they really are. The sections that focus on review of statics and strenghts is good, but when it comes to analyzing failure theories, the book complicates the matter unnecessarily. The failure theories presented are for raw, rough estimation purposes only, but shigley tries to put band-aids on them and doctor them up to make them more precise, and in the process completely confuses the matter. I'm taking a mechanical component design class and my teacher was an avid promoter of this book up until this edition (sixth edition) -- now he recommends we don't even use the book because it's too confusing even for him. Unfortunately, this will be one of the few books I will rid myself of after the class is over. I think I may try to get an earlier edition instead.

Unsuitable for undergraduates

The original Mechanical Engineering Design book written by Joseph Shigley, and later, with Larry Mitchell, was an excellent undergraduate text; it was readable at the introductory level, and it contained enough information and methodology for use as a good reference book after graduation. Unfortunately, this revised text, which was rewritten by Charles Mischke, is thoroughly unreadable, obfuscating, and is totally unsuitable as a text for undergraduate mechanical engineering students. The book is full of nuances, subtleties and informative data that do make it useful as a reference book on the shelf of an experienced design engineer, but not as a text for students learning the subject. For those who plan to teach a course for mechanical engineering majors on this topic, I recommend other texts such a Jack Collins' Mechanical Design of Machine Elements and Machines, Wiley, 2003.

ASTD Books are Great!

I gave this book only 3 stars, not because of any lack of quaility. The content is not new. But the format and usability is worth 5 stars. This is a very functional book if you're involved in organizational training. This book has several diferent modules to use in short or long-term training. If you work in organization training -- this is a must buy. Very functional!

Be sure you know what you want from a "Presentation Skills" book. This may not be it.

I've used several books from this series and found them very useful. My three-star rating may be due to me ordering this based on the title more than anything else. This is not a book to help you improve your presentation skills, but rather a series of lessons on teaching "non-presenters" very basic presentation skills. If you already present to groups and just want to sharpen your own skills, this book will probably be a disappointment.
