It helps but, ...

I purchased this solution's manual to assist me with Beer & Johnston's Vector Mechanics for Engineers. Although the solutions they provide therein are clear and complete, you should not expect to find a solution to a specific problem bedeviling you. I spent a great deal of time looking for a similar solved problem from which I could harvest the technique and apply to my situation but, 70% of the time I was unsuccessful. In the absence of a solutions manual from the publisher and limited professor office hours, this may be your only recourse. Good Luck!

For a book purporting to be of solved problems, then I cannot reccomend it at all. The workings are not very thorough... skipping out whole lines of calculation. This leaves you with the feeling that figures have just been plucked out of the air.

Not very helpful for assistance with coursework or revision.

About the Author
Bungale S. Taranath, Ph.D., DE, FI, Struct E, is senior project manager with the largest consulting firm in the United States, at John A. Martin and Associates, located in Los Angeles, California. He has extensive experience in the design of concrete, steel, and composite tall buildings, and has served as principal-in-charge on many notable high-rise projects. He has held positions as a senior project engineer in Chicago, Illinois, and as vice president and principal-in-charge with two consulting firms in Houston, Texas. He is a fellow the Institution of Structural Engineers, London, England; a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Concrete Institute; and a registered structural and professional engineer in several states. He has conducted research into the behavior of tall buildings and shear wall structures and is the author of a number of published papers on torsion analysis and multistory construction projects, including Structural Analysis and Design of Tall Buildings, published by McGraw-Hill.

Very Practical and Useful Book

It is a very practical book containg material which will be useful to those engaged in the design of tall buildings. The unique thing about this book is the fact Taranath has given details of many important tall buildings,which will guide us before choosing a framework for the new building. He also explains how a structural system can be chosen. It has numerous practical examples. The code clauses are clearly explained.The Design for Wind and Earthquake are given in a nice manner with reference to latest codes of practices.His explanations are very easy to understand. Lateral and gravity systems for steel,concrete and composite constructions are given with numerous drawings in seperate chapters. Analysis techniques are given in an easy to understand fashion with less mathematical complexity. Design methods are also given. Discussion on related items such as damping and cladding systems,Foundation design,seismic design of Diaphragm ,etc. are also included. The data on Structural quantities will be a boon to those who want to have a preliminary estimate of the building, they are going to design. In all, it is a book worth buying and will serve as a reference for a long time. With this book and a proper software, we can design any tall building with ease.

Kenneth Ruge has written a wonderful, easy to follow guide that is very compelling and hard to put down. Were do I Go From Here? has assisted me and many of my friends in breaking through the barriers of limiting past memories to allow a fresh and effective way to spiritually explore our gifts and talents. This book has also helped me identify those things which I am passonate about and has assisted me in finding ways to apply them in my current job. I feel a renewed ability to look at my career path as a wonderful journey and I am no longer afraid to follow a new path or direction. Ruge's book has taught me to trust myself.

Good for engineers

It is said Tymoshenko is among the first who introduced mechanics to the states. I gave it five stars because of its historical importance.I have this book on shelf, due to it large influence but, to be frank, seldom referred to it. This book, like all other Tymoshenko's books, was written in a pure engieering fashion. If you are looking at these solved problems, like twisting of a prismatic bars, this is the book for you. It involves many classical technique for solving boundary value problmes. However, if you are more theoretically orientated, there are much better presentations outside, from the moderate mathematical Fung's book, to the highly mathematical Green's book. It is my opinion that the beautiful theoretical parts of elasticity are absent in Tymoshenko.

This is an all time classic..

A classic text and a good buy for a whole career. It covers everything. I know it is quite an old book but it is still the best one around about elasticity. I was using this book in my university years when I was doing a General Engineering course however, I still find it very useful. This book is a must-have for all engineers.

Bound to be controversial, this impressive expose by three journalists charges that the S & L industry was taken over by a national network of Mafiosi, corrupt thrift officers, appraisers, auditors and arms- and drug-dealers laundering money, all of whom exploited opportunities provided by the 1982 deregulation. Fortified with unlimited broker deposits, the network plundered hundreds of federally insured thrifts. The authors discount the role of high oil prices, the Sunbelt recession and other factors as catalysts in the S & L disaster. Excepting Federal Home Loan Bank Board chairman Erwin Gray, who fought to limit deposit brokerage, Pizzo, Fricker and Muolo accuse the Justice Department, the courts and other federal and state agencies for ignoring or covering up four years of fraud. They also maintain that the guilty have not been punished and little of the loot has been recovered out of official fear of revelation.

Three investigative reporters trace what has happened to the savings-and-loan industry since President Reagan signed into law the Garn-St. Germain bill which deregulated the way thrift institutions can invest money in order to better compete with financial firms that offered more attractive alternatives to savings-and-loan depositors. Some of the results involved shoddy investments that ruined banks and put the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation in deep financial trouble. The authors chronicle some of the more serious cases that involved illegal schemes, organized crime, greedy bank officials, and scandal. Like a good mystery, this is hard to put down, and if the reader has trouble with the jargon, there is a good glossary. A very timely and popular item.

I never knew this happened (it should never have happened)

I highly recommend this to those of us who were not adults at the time: in the 80's, I was still a kid - I couldn't be bothered to know what was happening in the world of S&Ls. Little did I know, but those high-flyers would affect my taxes for years (and years and years).

The book is easy to read - not too technical. It was a bit repetitive at times, but I think that's because many of the S&L crooks used the same types of illegal ponzi schemes to move money from one pocket to the other.

If you're like me, and knew very little about the S&L debacle, then let this book educate you. It's a telling tale of the problems brought-about by rampant de-regulation. I never knew that the S&L scandal(s) involved the wholesale looting of these banks (and American taxpayers - since they were federally protected deposits).

If you're already well-versed in the subject, you can read this to get some of the more personal stories of theft and graft.

There were also stories of corrupt politicians. I know it's a shock, but to me there's nothing more disgusting than a public trustee bending the rules to their advantage: they work for us.

About the Author
Seattle resident Migael Scherer has been cruising Pacific Northwest waters and living aboard since 1974, when she and her husband launched the sailboat they had spent two years building. The first, and still best, cruising guide we bought

This was the first book my wife and I purchased when we started boating in the Puget Sound 5 years ago. We have bought dozens of boating books since. This is still our favorite. We have worn it out and are now buying another copy to keep at the house. The descriptions of harbor entrances are more complete than other books we use - we always use Scherer's descriptions for new approaches. The book is fun to read - includes sidebars of historical or social interest. Nice photography and an eye-pleasing layout. (Tidal current charts are included in the appendix.)

The Best for Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands

After 10 years of cruising and teaching sailing/cruising skills in this area, and this is the best guide to all of the US waters of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. Should be on all charter boats, but often is not, so if you are chartering inquire.
Add a "BBA Chart Kit" for detailed charts, and for the Canadian Gulf Islands "The Dreamspeaker Guide," and you are set!
Finally, adding this season's "Waggoners" guide will give you the latest contact information for marinas, etc.

I like the Afoot and Afloat series by the Muellers better

Some charts in this book are very hard to read because they are full sized charts shrunken to book size. The Mueller's hand drawn "maps" cut to the chase and provide a fast, simple references to approaches, park facilities, shore-side facilities, fuel docks, buoys, etc. The Muellers are much more informative about individual places. This book is also too large and heavy IMO, it tries to cover too much. I carry real charts anyway, so why screw around with these miniature sized ones.

I'll moor it on my bookshelf and take my old copy of Marge and Ted's book when we leave tomorrow.

In this little book a fictitious authority on stone-age education presents a series of lectures satirizing educators and education. Professor Peddiwell reports that the three fundamentals taught to youngsters in the paleolithic curriculum were (1) fish-grabbing-with-the-bare-hands, (2) horse-clubbing, and (3) saber-tooth-tiger-scaring-with-fire. When fish became too agile to catch with the bare hands and horses and tigers disappeared, schools nevertheless went on teaching the old fundamentals for their cultural value. The eventual revolt of the progressive educators against traditional curriculum is described in one of the most entertaining passages in this amusing satire.

Witty, Caustic, and Creative Indictment of Academia

This book is in the form of a narrative dialogue between a professor and a former student in a Tijuana bar over the course of a few days. This bar in Tijuanna is the last place the former student (now a failing salesman) expected to find the straight-laced processor slamming tequilla shots and lecturing on the "History of Paleothic Education".

The professor's lectures explore the reasons why the education system, generally, and academia, specifically, have failed to innovate and evolve, by spinning an allegorical tale of the history of the educational curriculum in a paleolithic tribe.

Funny, witty, entertaining, and a very fast read (I read it in around 3 hours), this book is a must read not only for those in academia, but for anyone that had, or has, to do dogmatic, antiquated, and non-sensical tasks in their school and/or workplace.

If you are looking for a fun and interesting commentary on the "evolution" of our current educational system, you will enjoy this book. It is tongue in cheek while hitting the mark about trends in the educational system. This book comments on everything from religion to marriage to economics to afterschool programs.
The characters Wayne and Peddiwell are wonderful, especially after they down several tequila daisies.
