Great Book

If you're in sales-your gonna love this book. Many of these stories are classic sales stories about achieving sales success. I believe the best way to learn how to do anything is find a role model. Find someone who has done it. That what this book does. It shows you many real life examples of what really works in the sales business. Read, enjoy and apply them into your situation. Highly recommended.

These are generally short chapter,perhaps 4-6 pages each, making them ideal for a brief review or for a sales meeting. Topics cover every facet of selling, and drawn from a wide variety of fields--but with universal applicability. Excellent vacation book for a salesman. Not heavy reading, but definitely heavy return on investment. Good gift.

In preparing for a class on Military History I found that Morillo's book to be a perfect match to the curriculum that I am developing for the course, the book is very readable. The map work is excellent it gives the student a clear defined description of battles or geographic features in a true global context. It also gives descriptions of battle movement and the outcome, all in the context of World History. I wish I would have had these books years ago when I began teaching Advanced Placement World History it would have made my teaching wars in history a lot easier. Thank you Elisabeth O'Donnell

Not Just A Textbook

If you enjoy learning about history, this book belongs in your bathroom. It's not one that should collect dust. Really well written and concise. It paints a picture of historical events that is easy to follow and interesting. Reading a random page in a single sitting will make you feel better about yourself.

Also, [amazon.com's] price is [high] for this book, whereas other retailers are selling it for [less], probably because it is such an old book.

Revitalizing underutilized industrial sites---how it's done

The authors clearly present the factors that, on one hand, allow industrial and commercial property eyesores to exist, and on the other hand, those factors that can redevelop them into valuable modern real estate. The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewers have participated in brownfields remediation designs and in the development of estimated costs for remediation, sometimes extending decades into the future. Brownfields are, according to an EPA definition, "...abandoned, idled, or underused industrial and commercial sites where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination that can add cost, time and uncertainty to a redevelopment project."
A few decades ago industrialists eyeing real estate for acquisition would be concerned about the use they could foresee, the asking price, zoning potential, the neighborhood, and a few other particulars. Rarely were they deeply concerned about what had gone on at the property in past years. Now, one of the first things a prospective buyer wants to know is "what might have gone on here in past years that has resulted in contamination of structures, the grounds, subsurface, or any water bodies." Property owners have similar concerns, but they have more information. So that both buyers and sellers wonder what magnitude of environmental remediation costs would be required for various redevelopment projects. The authors take the reader through the major considerations of both buyer and seller. They treat both the private and municipal redeveloper.
Their case studies, though largely drawn from their Chicago experiences, emphasize the careful planning and execution steps required in redevelopment anywhere. Based on data from less than 200 sites, the cost of brownfields redevelopment has been estimated to be just under $60,000 per acre. Cleanup of contamination, where it occurs, has been estimated at 8% of the total cost of redevelopment. The authors make an excellent point that much more cooperation is needed between interested parties to expand brownfields redevelopment. Venture groups are needed consisting of environmental scientists and engineers, capital providers, insurance specialists, real estate experts, and an experience project management team. Not to be forgotten is "due diligence". For a brownfields purchaser this means an in-depth analysis of the physical, economic, and legal conditions of any property in question. The authors describe how this analysis must have much more depth to it than the due diligence involved with purchase of an uncompromised industrial property. Federal, state, and local environmental officials, and governmental officials must appreciate the importance of rejuvenating unused brownfields as opposed to converting more fertile farms to industrial properties. And finally those officials must have the will to find ways to make a remediation happen. Individuals in all of the above occupations are well-advised to read this book.
As a model of an up-to-date state initiative to hasten brownfields remediation, the authors provide the details of the Illinois Pollution Control Board's Tiered Approach to Corrective Action Objectives ("TACO").

About the Author
A Professor of Accounting at Cornell University, Professor Hilton teaches in the areas of managerial accounting and cost management systems. With bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting from The Pennsylvania State University, he received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. A Cornell faculty member since 1977, Professor Hilton also has taught accounting at Ohio State and the University of Florida, where he held the position of Walter J. Matherly Professor of Accounting. Prior to pursuing his doctoral studies, Hilton worked for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Company and served as an officer in the United States Air Force. Professor Hilton is a member of the Institute of Management Accountants and has been active in the American Accounting Association. He has served as associate editor of The Accounting Review and as a member of its editorial board. Hilton also has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Management Accounting Research. He has been a member of the resident faculties of both the Doctoral Consortium and the New Faculty Consortium sponsored by the American Accounting Association. With wide-ranging research interests, Hilton has published articles in many -journals, including the Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, -Management Science, Decision Sciences, The Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Contemporary Accounting Research, and the Journal of Mathematical Psychology. Author of Managerial Accounting, he also has published a monograph in the AAA Studies in Accounting Research series, is a co-author of Budgeting: Profit Planning and Control, and is a co-author of Cost Accounting: Concepts and Mana-ge-rial Applications. Professor Hilton's current research interests focus on contemporary cost management systems and international issues in managerial accounting. In recent years, he has toured manufacturing facilities and consulted with practicing managerial accountants in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

AN OUTSTANDING BOOK ON MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING

I am teaching Management Accounting to the students of MBA and professional bodies for the last 21 years and have critically studied some of the best available text books on the subject. This book is very well written and covers the major topics. It is an outstanding book particularly for beginners and MBA students for a one semister course. The author has proovided good illustrations and a variety of exercises and problems at the end of chapter. However those who wish to specialise in Managerial Accounting need additional readings. I adopted this book for MBA students since its 1st edition was published. At present I have adopted the 5th edition which has been revised in line with the changing environment. Majority of the students have very much appreciated this book because it is easy to understand. I have observed that some students of professional bodies are also referring to this book for reference purpose.

Finest Managerial Accounting Text I've Read!

This text is very valuable in that it doesn't require the student to needlessly crunch numbers in order to get an understanding of the concepts. The author cleverly presents the information in such a way that by doing short exercises the reader gains insight as to the underlying processes involved in creating managerial/cost accounting systems. This is far more valuable than following the rote-memorization technique that most managerial accounting texts utilize. Also, the inclusion of the newer, more analytical, techniques of structuring costing systems was particularly helpful.
The proof is in the pudding: Since utilizing this text, I have been able to add significant value to a $4B organization's costing efforts.

This book isnt worth the money.

The fourth edition of managerial accounting by Hilton focuses more on pretty text covers and graphics than creating understandable text. I found this book confusing at points and lacking in complex examples with answers. Examples are not any good without an explanation. I feel this book is too expensive and you can learn managerial accounting a lot less painlessly with other books on the market.

Of the many books about Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977), among them the Tramp's own charming but evasive 1964 autobiography, this magisterial volume does by far the best job of detailing and analyzing his genius as a filmmaker. Chaplin's widow allowed David Robinson to examine their personal archives in Switzerland, and he makes good use of this access in his meticulous descriptions of the movies that created the legend, including City Lights and Modern Times. Robinson is less interested in Chaplin's tumultuous personal life, skating rather lightly over the lawsuits and scandals that plagued his later years in the United States. No matter: Chaplin lovers will find their understanding of his films enhanced; those unfamiliar with his artistry will learn why an actor-director whose greatest work was done before 1940 remains a key figure in the history of motion pictures.

Only two...

There are only two books necessary for the true Chaplin fan; "My Autobiograpy", by Chaplin himself, and this book by Robinson. While there are scores of other books on the market concerning Chaplin's life, Robinson's is THE definitive work.

If Charlie had been around to read this work, he might have amended his famous phrase from "If you want to know me, see my movies," to "If you want to know me, see my movies and read this book".

Complete biography and history of motion pictures.

Robinson carries us through Chaplin's entire life with emphasis on his various relationships, his loves, and abundant, specific information on each of his movies. The book's well written, very thorough, and best read with Chaplin videotapes alongside, for a real understanding of the history of the early years of "show-biz."
