Tough to follow

Perhaps it is because I started taking Masters classes several years after graduating, but this book is highly technical without a lot of detail, which made it difficult and confusing to follow. The book has a nice old-school way of writing things and stating the problems, like Shakspear for engineers, which made reading it and understanding the information and the practice problems tough. Along those same lines, the book constantly refers to "Art XX" for information, which I finally figured out really meant chapters (your welcome for that tid bit). Long story short, if you're expecting a book that really helps walk you through the problems, uses language you're use to and asks for straight forward problem solutions, this isn't it and the Elasticity class, in general, might not be the class for you either.

Stuningly bad book! A terrible Kindle execution also.

As other reviewers have noted, the book is a jumble. I can't find my way through chapters logically, let alone see the logical flow of the book as a whole. It claims to have electronic links to things like spreadsheets and videos...it does not. All the links are dead. The publisher's website promises tons of content, and there's virtually nothing, and what is there is just fluff, not of any real use.

And finally, the book is not updated in any meaningful way since the 8th edition (I compared it in the library). Literally all they did was tweak the number in the problem section so you don't get the same answers. Every word of the text is verbatim, except for some very minor changes (they refer to different baseball players' salaries, or sales of expensive art auction items). So they published a "new" edition not cause there's new information, or to update the content in keeping with the 2008-present recession, or anything else of academic merit. The changes are basically cosmetic, in order to sell more books. Putting out a new edition was not just unnecessary, it was evil.

As for the Kindle execution...first, no page numbers. All books of this sort need literal page numbers, so that kindle users can follow along with the rest of the class. then, they only let you use it on two devices. One of the beauties of Kindle books is that you can bounce from device to device; your phone, your iPad, your laptop, your desktop and home and work, your Kindle, the new Kindle you had to buy because the old one got stolen, the new Kindle you bought because the newer models just came out...you get my drift. NOT with this book! You're limited to two devices. TWO! Utterly ridiculous.

In sum, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If you have to, plead to get a used copy of the 8th edition, you'll learn every bit as much. What might be missing can be found on the web. Teachers...if you must assign it to students, at least have the courtesy to let students us an older edition, since the 8th is exactly the same book.

Terrible book and wouldn't recommend it to anyone

This book might be good for financial scientists with all of the complicated formulas and symbols that aren't consistent throughout the material. I hated it in my MBA course and found that I resorted to online research and YouTube for better and easier to understand formulas to use.

Practical Tips

Great little book. The sheer number of tips may seem overwhelming, but there is an underlying theme for many of them: take an interest in others. We're all too familiar with those people who tend to turn the attention on themselves in a conversation. One uppers. People using a conversation as a sounding board or a soapbox. Then there are those who fail to connect anything they're saying with us. It's like taking turns bowling, where we each wait politely for our chance to make an utterance that does nothing to move the conversation forward. We're just treading water until it's time to climb out of the pool (and run home).
Then there are those magic people, wizards who exude some magic aura. You want to be near these people. What's their secret?
As Lowndes relates in an anecdote, when she reflected on a particularly enjoyable conversation, the author realized her interlocutor had kept the attention on her. Without even knowing it at the time, Lowndes had been at the center of attention. Not because she was seeking it necessarily, but because the person she was talking to focused on Lowndes.
Perhaps this review is losing coherence at this point...so let me summarize my experience.
Reading this book made me realize the following:
1)confident people don't need to prove themselves to others in a conversation; they can keep the attention on others
2)I'm guilty of many of the donts in this book
3)like anything in life, talent helps, but anyone can develop these skills through practice and self monitoring.
Great book, but remember you got to actually try some of these tips. Practicing one a day and keeping a journal of it might help.

wonderful book of great wisdom to anyone with slight social issues

I was desperate, but skeptical when I ordered this book. Ever since becoming a member of an editorial team at my high school, I've encountered countless moments when I JUST can't seem to communicate on a personal level with the rest of the staff members, who were all a grade above me.

Yes. I felt timid every time I spoke to the editors, and despite how much I wanted to talk to them, I couldn't even make it past a thirty second conversation. And after I accidentally goofed on our FIRST release? Oh god none of them even bothered to talk to me after that... And I felt way too threatened to try to start a conversation. So the result was this: I suffered from becoming the social outcast because of a pretty bad first impression.....

After reading the book, I understood why.
1) I abused the Quick-smiles that were mentioned as shallow in the first chapter. I would flash a smile that immediately disappear after three seconds (or less). I'm now working on the "flowing smile" technique :D :)
2) I simply had 0 skills in making small conversations. Usually the small talks end with me or the listener just running off with a "Oh I've gotta go now"
3) It was my specialty to ask overly obvious questions and make the most awkward comments at the worst times.....
4) The "instant history" technique was something I never used despite the various circumstances I catch myself in.
5) I fidgeted a lot and gave embarrassed smiles when I wasn't feeling embarrassed.
6) technique #88, "my goof your gain" was something I really should have used to ease the tension.....

well darn it. I'll just keep trying with this book's help. :D

Life Changer ... I mean it

This book changed my life. I'm serious. Yes, some of the vocabulary is a bit 'dated', but let me tell you something, this book has a permanent spot in my nightstand, and it's not going anywhere, ever. Worth it's weight in gold. And no, I'm not a paid sponsor, why you offering?

While no one book can teach you everything about mail order marketing, How to Start and Operate a Mail Order Business gives the reader a good overview of the many things that a person will come across when in the Mail Order Business. If this is your first venture in mail order it is a very good starting point.

If you are pursuing or thinking of adventuring into the mail-order business, then this is a very thorough and complete book (I say this from a novice standpoint). I have been reading other mail-order topic books, but none have compared to this one. This book offers inspiration, the disadvantages & advantages of the business and everything from A-Z regarding the business. Great book, worth the buy! You won't be dissapointed.

About the Author
The Late MURRAY R. SPIEGEl received the M.S degree in Physics and the Ph.D. in Mathematics from Cornell University. He had positions at Harvard University, Columbia University, Oak Ridge and Rensselaer Polytechnic Insitute, and served as a mathematical consultant at several large Companies. His last Position was professor and Chairman of mathematics at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Hartford Graduate Center. He was interested in most branches of mathematics, especially those which involve applications to physics and engineering problems. One of the best books, not just outline books

This is supposedly a review book. Yet I think it is one of the best books on the subject. It is elementary, and might not cover all the latest advances, yet it has a wealth of examples, beautiful explanations, and a very nice assortment of subjects. I particularly liked his lozenge diagram approach to methods of integration, his concise and lucid explanation of the Euler-Maclaurin sum formula, applications of the sum calculus, and clear parallels to standard calculus (ininitesimal) throughout. You can't do much better than this well-written text for basics of finite differences.

Good introductory book

This is a good introductory book to the subject of difference equations, a subject much overlooked in science and engineering curricula. Many problems in transport phenomena (fluid mechanics, heat transfer, mass transfer) appear in the form of very complicated differential equations, often non-linear, often in more than one dimension. Usually there is no way to solve these equations analytically, so they have to be converted to difference equations and solved by computers. Thus, knowing how to make those conversions and how to manipulate difference equations is actually very important in areas such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Spiegel supplies an excellent introduction to the field. He is very clear. He gives many good examples. If you look at the table of contents you know what you will be getting. It's not advanced but like many Schaum books that I value, it gives you a good, clear start into a new field without the need of an instructor. The many worked examples drive the points home.

This subject had become more important over the years due to our increased computing power but is by no means new. Should provide a good reference to someone wanting to teach themselves basic recurrence relations (also called difference equations) before studying discrete dynamical systems and chaos theory (for that I'd recommend Yorke or Strogatz).

Murray Spiegel was and is highly regarded as an author of "teach yourself" mathematics texts. If you are struggling with applied mathematics at the undergraduate level I'd highly encourage taking a look at his other publications.

About the Author
Gershon J. Shugar is the author of The Chemist’s Ready Reference Handbook, also published by McGraw-Hill, and professor emeritus of engineering technologies at Essex County College, Newark, New Jersey. In 1947, Dr. Shugar founded a chemical manufacturing business that became the largest exclusive pearlescent pigment manufacturing company in the United States. In 1968, he was appointed assistant professor of chemistry at Rutgers University, where he taught until his appointment at Essex County College.

Jack T. Ballinger, Ed.D., is professor of chemistry at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley and the author of Chemical Technician's Ready Reference Handbook, published by McGraw-Hill. Dr. Ballinger has taught chemical technology courses for the past 29 years. He is a member of the American Chemical Society's coordinating committee developing national skill standards for the chemical process industry.

Loads of important information all in one book.

This book provides me with technical information commonly needed in a laboratory environment. It seems to boil down many references all into one easy to read book. The index is fantastic, you can find anything in the book quickly and easily. This is usually a problem with most reference books, but not with this one.

I recently purchased this textbook to serve as a refresher for undergraduate analytical chemistry and to supplement my job specific training as a chemical technician. The text covers a wide variety of topics and includes some material not normally covered in undergraduate analytical coursework. Overall, this text is a useful resource; however, there are some issues that should have been resolved by now, considering this text is in its fifth edition of print. After reading through two chapters, here are the errors that standout to me: (1) There are many grammatical errors and sentence structure mistakes. (2) Some common cations in the "Inorganic Chemistry Review" are named incorrectly, and (3) There are also some mislabeled cyclic hydrocarbons in the "Organic Chemistry Review" chapter.

I have only read through two chapters of this text thus far. Assuming there are no fundamental theory inaccuracies, I would still recommend this book to anyone who plans to work in the pharmaceutical or biotech industries. The topics covered in the first 8 chapters of this book are not generally covered in undergraduate coursework, or are often covered with minimal application. Although this training is typically provided by your employer, exposure to this material would serve as an advantage, especially in today's ever changing and competitive market.

No PeopleSoft questions in this book

No peoplesoft like the editorial review claims. Plus, this book has very little useful information about interviewing. It's just a bunch of technical questions organized by chapter. The Oracle questions are out of date, for version 8i which was released in 1999. Don't get this book for help on how to interview. Get "Ace the IT job interview". I am glad I only paid $3 for this. It is barely worth that.

Should be pulled from the shelves!!!!!!!!

The Visual Basic 5.0 section contains errors too numerous to skip over. Here are some examples. Most are from question and answer format. These are not picky errors. They are total misrepresentations of the language. I know enough VB to find these answers. I would like to use the other sections of the book to learn from, but if these mistakes can get printed, the other sections can not possibly be worth the risk of learning from. p428 q1 Totally false. There is no Menu Design window. It is a Menu Editor window located under the Tools menu. q3 "What does the "at" sign character (@) in front of a letter do?" Answer is totally false. Should be the ampersand character (&). q4 Menu Design reference q5 " q7 These do not match what I have. All versions should have Exit. Correct? p429 q11 Not the Environments tab, the Editor Format tab q12 Your answer produces an error. Should be "...as String*20" p430 q3 Wrong. You use F8 to Step Into code, Shift +F8 to Step Over, and CTRL +Shift +F8 to Step Out p431 q8 Wrong. Just use ListCount. That is 9 errors on 4 pages. Many more follow. The writer did not know VB 5.0!

Stay away from this book

I have a solid background in C/C++ and I was hoping to fill in some gaps in other areas with this book. Unfortunately, given the poor quaility of the C/C++ information (and the sometimes-silly stuff in the "how to interview" section), I really don't trust what's in the rest of the volume.
The C/C++ chapter is divided into "beginner", "intermediate", and "advanced" sections. Instead, they should be labeled "unbelievably trivial", "very trivial", and "trivial". Even worse, much of the information is presented in a misleading or incorrect fashion. I suppose this is to be expected, given that the main credentials of the person who wrote the C/C++ section are a music degree and the ability to play the string bass.
If I were giving an interview and I heard a candidate parroting the C/C++ answers in this book, I would promptly show him/her to the door.
Instead, get a copy of: "Programming Interviews Exposed" by Mongan and Suojanen.

Half of this book is just right for you...

I am in the process of studying for Part I of the Psychiatry Boards and bought this book. I was particularly interested in boning up on Neurology, and turned to the Neurology portion in the front of the book. I then became terrified at my lack of knowledge, wondering how I could ever be expected to know this stuff. Turns out that half of this book (the first half, in this case) is intended for neurologists studying for their Boards, and includes an appropriately measured section on Psychiatry; the second half is for psychiatrists, and has a similarly basic section on Neurology. Having recovered from my near CVA, I have found the Neurology (for psychiatrists) questions to be reassuringly accessible to my knowledge base, but I could have done with a few more questions of this sort. Neurologists will presumably feel the same about their section. I am not quite sure of the logic of making one book for the two different populations, other than justifying the printing run. However, all of the questions in the portion of the book for psychiatrists have been appropriately challenging, the answers are appropriately explanatory, and overall the book has been very helpful in assessing my own areas of strength and weakness. Just expect to buy half a book that you won't use, unless you are double-boarding, or want to be humbled by how much you don't know about another doctor's specialty.

Partial Differential Equations (PDE) is a very large field of mathematics. Most of the problems originated in the characterization of fields occurring in classical and modern physics such as potential and wave equations associated with gravitation, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics.

Some books in this subject are quite theoretical, and deal quite extensively with existence proofs such as the necessary and sufficient conditions required for a solution (Example: Courant Hilbert Methods of Mathematical Physics Volume 2, Petrovsky's Lecture on PDE or Sobolev's PDE of Mathematical Physics ), others are much more applied, and oriented towards explaining and illustrating various techniques, that can be used to solve various PDE (Example: Morse Fesbach's Methods of Theoretical Physics, Sommerfeld's PDE or Farlow's PDE for Scientists and Engineers).

The present book is a more modest book, as the title indicates it is an introduction. The book tends to be towards applied side of PDE, though it

develops the subject using theorems and proofs (and examples). The content of the book is fairly standard, it overlaps with most other PDE books (equations of mathematical physics).

It does not discuss extensively special functions (this topics can be found in many other books), though the reader is invited to get acquainted with these functions through solving problems at the end each chapter (Answers to odd number problems can be found at he end of the book.)

Nor does it discuss the use of generalized functions to solve PDE (he book was written in 1957)

There are some topics present, which are usually not included in other books on PDE. I found the discussion on Pfaffian differential equation

and its application to Caratheodory's formulation for the 2nd law of thermodynamics enlightening (those who are familiar with differential forms (see Frankel's Geometry of Physics) may find the exposition somewhat old fashioned, but I think the underlying concept is still the same).

The parts of the book I read, I found quite clear, but still requiring some patience in spite of the fact that I already knew about PDE from other books (in a rather haphazard manner)(there may not be a royal road to PDE)

In summary, this is a sound introduction to PDE. It requires some patience to read, if you are only interested in solving PDE, you will probably find Farlow's better suited for your need.

Global, integrability..

The chapter on first order partial differential equations is an excellent primer on examples of global integrability in dynamical systems theory (including but not restricted to Hamilton-Jacobi theory, driven-dissipative systems are implicitly included), although the word integrability is never mentioned. The rest of the text is ok but fairly standard. I also like and have used the book by Duff (Toronto) but do not find it listed.
