YA Retton's life story is presented, in her own words, to the author. Since she was only 16 when the book was written, she does not have a whole lot to tell. Equal space is devoted to her trainer, Romanian-born Bela Karolyi, whose life is more interesting. He tells of his struggles with the Romanian government in trying to start a gymnastics program, his defection to this country and his success in overcoming obstacles in America to get his gymnastic program started here. Once Mary Lou and Bela get together, her story really picks up. She talks about her hopes and dreams, her feelings about Bela's hard training and about going to the Olympics. She comes across as a determined and purposeful young woman who sets goals and then goes all out to accomplish them. There are 12 pages of black-and-white photographs; some are of Mary Lou as a small child but most are of her in action at the Olympics. Powers has done a successful job of letting Mary Lou's and Bela's personalities come through in their speech patterns. They alternate in their stories, aided by Powers, author of One Goal . While George Sullivan's Mary Lou (Messner, 1985) and other YA books have appeared already, Retton's own account will appeal to aspiring gymnasts and other young readers. Best book I have ever read!

This book was wonderful. I picked it up at my library and I finished it within four days! I could not put it down. I am the type of person who hates to read but this is definetly a five-star book. I recommend this book to any gymnast. This book makes you want to go to the gym. It gave me a great example that teaches me that hard work pays off. Mary Lou is the best gymnast in the world you may not believe it now but after you read this book you will! One word to describe this book, EXCELLENT!

World's Best Book on Lebesgue measure and integration

This book contains the standard 1st year graduate material on Real Analysis.A very solid background in undergraduate analysis is required to get started in reading and working through this book.In the United States one rarely finds a graduate level math textbook with solved problems unfortunately.This interesting book is one of the few exceptions to this rule.The 375 solved problems in this outline are most instructive and an essential tool for anybody that truly wants to understand what is really going on in this difficult subject.There is also plenty of supplementary problems for the reader to try on his/her own.One of the most interesting aspects of this book is the development of the Lebesgue Integral in terms of Upper and Lower sums .Too often people do not understand the more abstract definition given in just about all other textbooks.This definition is parallel with that of the Riemann Integral from undergratuate anaylsis.This book is a true gem and a rare find.

Like the other books of the Schaum's Outline series, this book goes through the theories and shows you how to work the problems step by step. Although this is very helpful, I like to be able to test my knowledge. I say this is good for review because you will remember as you read this. You will also have a good idea of whether you are doing the supplementary problems correct or not. Here, most the supplementary problems do not have answers. Those that do, just have the final answer rather than an illustration of how the writers got the answer. This is difficult if you are learning about real variables for the first time.
As well as giving you the basic concepts, this book also goes into Lebesgue integrals, Riemann integrals, and Fourier series. The explanations are fairly well written, and the examples are easy to follow.

Poor History Book

This is not a very good book. Salisbury does not give any background so that a new reader can understand the political situation in China which led up to the Long March. Additionally, Salisbury appears to be quite biased towards the Chinese Communists - according to him, Mao can do no wrong while he denigrates Chiang Kai-shek at every turn. He completely ignores the logistics of the march and the effect it must have had on the peasants of the areas the communists went through. According to his statistics, the communists began the march 80,000 strong, living off the land. They claim to have expropriated food and other materials from "landlords" but they must also have taken grain and animals from the peasants in order to support their force. This likely devastated the communities the march went through.
He also does not indicate how the communists replenished their arms and ammunition, since they couldn't get that from the landlords or peasants. Military supplies must have been sent to the Chinese Communists from the Soviets but that issue is never even mentioned. He also never explains why Chiang's vastly superior forces, which included air power, could not destroy the communists.
This book is mostly a paean to the communists - something that might have been written by the communists for a "Long March" reunion - not an unbiased history book.

remarkable achievement

This book chronicles events that led to, during, and shortly after the Long March, which was a heroic journey that the Chinese Communist-led Red Army took in the mid-30's. The journey started as the Red Army was driven out of their base by Chiang Kai Shek's Nationalist Army and faced total defeat. The Red Army fled the Nationalist Army by walking in the remote areas of China for two years and some 7000 miles while defending themselves against the Nationalist troops that were chasing them. But at the end of the journey, the Red Army not only survived but was also strengthened and earned more popular support. The Long March is considered a key turning point in the modern Chinese history.
In this book, Salisbury combined his amazing story-telling skills with careful research and the unbiased attitude that a good reporter should possess. He interviewed generals, soldiers and ordinary citizens, collected stories related to historical events that were unknown to both Western readers AND Chinese readers. With all these materials, he tried to tell you what happened in China at that time, and why, and he succeeded. The details that Salisbury put in the book also allowed one to find out the personalities of the key players of modern Chinese history: Mao and his generals, Chiang and his generals.
Salisbury's story-telling skill is perhaps nothing new to many readers. I had great enjoyment when reading this book, I felt that I shared the emotions of the people in the book. The description of the battles was so vivid I almost felt that I was there watching.
So, if you want to know what life was like in the 1930s' China, if you want to know why Communism, an utterly unattractive idea in many people's eyes, won the support of Chinese people in the 30s', if you want to know what kind of people the Chinese Communist leaders were, or if you just want to read a good book on military history, read this one and you will not be disappointed.

It Does What It Can

This book covers an event about which most people know little, and of which there is little to none in the way of formal record.

Salisbury attempted to piece together some form of an account of the events which took place in the Long March with the only real information that could be gathered about the event: personal accounts, journals, and the like.

As another reviewer states, it's an excellent compilation of this disparate information that would take a person a great deal of time to find separately (if one could at all, especially since most who participated in the event died years ago).

If you came here looking for a formal textbook on the Long March, you're not going to find it here, or anywhere. If you came looking for what little is known about it (and some facts where the few were available), then you've come to the right place. It's not a perfectly observable world, and as a result a lot of pieces of history get lost. What information we have about the Long March would surely have been lost if not for the efforts of Salisbury, and it is good to have at least his imperfect compilation as an alternative to losing the event in the morass of ill-documented historical events.

There are better books out there

This book is descent but a poor substitute in light of better alternatives, namely Zar's Biostatistical Analysis or Sokal and Rohlf's Biometry. Zar's book is my favorite. I am not as familar with Sokal and Rohlf's but know enough that I prefer the organization and context of Zar. The limitations of Steel et al. is the needless use of matrix algebra, the lack of calculations in many cases (instead, the linear model is presented without decomposition into formulas), the brief discription for many of the analyses, lack of good examples, and difficult to follow writing. On the positive side, Steel et al. have a chapter on experimental design, which Zar and Sokal and Rohlf lack, although it is not an easy chapter to follow. My recommendation is to use Zar as your primary "go to" reference on biostatistics.

Great tool for the Educator

I found that Steel et al. covered a broad range of methodology needed for biological research, and that the scope of this text is comparable to any statistical manual available. It is very functional as a reference material for troubleshooting any design or analysis problems. As a professor of research methodology, I highly recommend consulting this text for improving the statistical analysis of biological research.

An average statistics book that takes examples from biology

I found this book somewhat disappointing. I found the book to be a run-of-the-mill statistics book that just happens to draw examples from Biology as opposed to other areas. The book is perfectly usable, but in my opinion, falls somewhat short of its intended purpose.

As statistics books go, this book is above average, but it is still not the clearest book out there. I do like the inclusion of example data within the book, but often the mathematics is not presented in the clearest way. I think there are a number of better statistics books out there, books that take the reader to a more advanced level while being easier to read. My favorite book that in my opinion achieves these goals is "Mathematical Statistics and Data Analysis" by John Rice.

I also would have appreciated much more discussion of biology. The authors do not do a good job of communicating what makes the application of statistics to biology special. There are important distinctions between the application of statistics in biology and its application in other fields, in terms of the usefulness of various techniques, and the sorts of problems and complications that arise. It is clear that the "biometrical approach" influenced the authors' choice of topics, but I wish they had more explicitly discussed how the mathematics relates to concepts and phenomena that are specific to biology. This potential connection to biology was the main reason I picked up this book, and I was quite disappointed to find that the connection wasn't developed to the degree I had expected.

Most widely used survey book of Economics

This book is updated every few years and is kept current. Since it is the most widely used survey book on Economics, any person that would like become more economically aware should read this book. Some concepts, like Capitalism, are pretty humpty-dumptish in that the word means whatever someone choosed it to mean. However, for those who are not trying to politicize economics and are willing to look at it for what it is, a social science studying an aspect of human behavior, this book is essential. That is because it is so widely read that most people with some economics training are familiar with the way it uses terms and it provides a common ground for discussion.
The book is excellent in that it takes complex mathematical relationships and by using graphs instead of the formula that create the graphs it is easy to see what is happening with demand curves, marginal utility and other concepts.
The question of whether economics "works" or does not work is silly. It is an attempt to describe an aspect of human behavior and like psychology, sociology, linguistics or an other such attempts, it is incomplete. This book provides a good introduction to the terms, the concepts and the issues of Economics. It is no accident that it is still the most widely used introduction to Economics text.

The old standard...

I read this book in college 25 years ago. Now we know that it doesn't work. But Samuelson ought to be read in self defense so that one knows what the statists in government believe their economic role to be. It's like you ought to read Dr. Spock to learn how NOT to bring up children if you want them to be happy and responsible adults.

One of the best electronic books today, optoelectronics is perfect, fun and easy to use. This is a guide to optical circuits which includes fiber optics and lasers, provides a collection of experiments and projects for the college student, technician, and hobbyist. The book is greatly detailed and simple directions to enter the field of optoelectronics in nontechnical terms. It is really fun and again, easy to use for any of its 88 projects. Dare to be challeged and be caught up in what I call the best "something to do" book.

Great examples of practical optoelectronic circuits

If you are a physicist or engineer, you'll find plenty of textbooks on optics, electronics, and optoelectronics, but probably not many examples of optoelectronic circuits. That is where the value of this book lies. There are the very basics of theory on optics in these chapters, but you will need to read other books to really be able to say you know optics. Chapter 3 is where the book takes a big upswing in quality and uniqueness. This chapter on optocouplers and optointerfacing and the example circuits are brilliant. Obvious and plain commonsense, you'll ask yourself "why didn't I think of it"? "Optocouplers and optointerfacing" presents a great many circuits for any number of purposes and the standouts would have to be the TTL - to - RS-232 interface, RS-232 infrared data transmission system and, a high speed RS-232 infrared computer interface. In later chapters we get to "wireless security systems" another interesting subject. The schematics are quite clear, contain comprehensive parts lists and include manufacturers of unusual parts. I didn't check the degree of ease or difficulty of sourcing these parts but I note that light dependent resistors and the phototransistor are manufactured by Vactec. They are not mentioned in the appendix of sources and vendors. Later chapters in my opinion only get better and better provided you have an interest in these areas.
In summary I highly recommend this book to individuals who want to get their hands on some concrete projects that unite the power of electronics and optics, provided they have other sources for the theory and also provided they are prepared to do some hunting for some of the rarer devices needed to build some of the circuits.

About the Author
Joel Spring, professor of education at the New School University, received his Ph.D. in educational policy studies from the University of Wisconsin. His father was born a citizen of the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory prior to the abolishment of the Choctaw government and the creation of Oklahoma. Professor Spring’s current interest in Native American culture and history is a reflection of his Indian background. His major research interests are the history of education, multicultural education, Native American culture, and the politics of education. Professor Spring is the author of many books including The Cultural Transformation of a Native American Family and Its Tribe 1763-1995: A Basket of Apples; Images of American Life: A History of Ideological Management in Schools, Movies, Radio, and Television; and Political Agendas for Education: From the Christian Coalition to the Green Party. Left-Leaning Primer on U.S. Educational Issues

This work is a usable primer for political and social issues surrounding the contemporary U.S. educational system as well as providing some background history, but is marred by mediocre composition (and editing) and some leftist bias. It also provides a general introduction to the history of minority groups in U.S. education. Should be taken with a grain of salt, but a reasonable starting-off point.

Spring evinces strong opinions regarding centralized testing, and various other subjects. While certainly non-objective in multiple aspects his analysis of various themes--including testing--is nonetheless worthwhile in reminding us of the potential dangers to freedom that can arise in test-centered educational systems. In terms of flaws, Spring often makes references with less-than clear context and makes statements without evidence (e.g. publishing a 10-item list of faults with the No Child Left Behind Act by an anti-NCLB that is exaggerated and with no evidence given). Non-U.S. students may have difficulty understanding various aspects of U.S. educational history without referencing outside sources.

Great for a Greater Perspective and Understanding

I was required to read "American Education" by Joel Spring for a graduate class at Santa Clara University. I did read the book cover to cover and have found it a great way to gain a much wider perspective on the American education system. If you would like to know more about education, equality of opportunity, the way the American education system works, the challenges the US faces of having a diverse student population this is the book for you. Spring provides a lot of questions for deeper thought and reflection but does not always provide solutions or answers to those questions you would like more information about. His questions are mainly food for thought.

A worthy read and resource

Spring crafts an quality work for the most part in this book, using facts and figures to deftly illustrate the complexities that lie behind modern education, and the historical events and movements that lead to its current state. The book is constructed in two parts. The first examines the place of the school in the social setting, both in how it helps influence and, to a degree, perpetuate the larger society, and how the society influences the school, both at the local and larger scales. The second is a more detailed examination of the politics of education control, and how it influences such choices as curriculum content and textbook choices.
Throughout the book, Spring uses more anecdotes and examples, both recent and historical than one can shake a stick at, but despite the potential weighing down of the book that this could cause, he keeps it interesting and informative. He also shows remarkable clarity of statistics, considering the approach he takes. Yet he never gets too enamored by them to think that they are inherently informative.
I also must commend Spring for his even-handedness in presenting both sides of issues. Though one gains a knowledge of his own beliefs, which are fairly progressive, he brings up authors on both sides and raises questions they do to stimulate thinking.
In the long run, however, there may be a few too many statistics, and the two parts of the book do duplicate each other at times. This is definitely not a book that one should try to read all in one sitting, as their mind would begin to overflow with numbers that aren't really meant to be memorized, just referred to when the occasion calls for it.
Despite the denseness, however, Spring does a remarkable job of presenting the various issues of the day in one relatively easy to read volume.

Read it if you need to write your first simulation program

Before reading this book I didn't have a clue about simulation modeling, but after reading the first few chapters I was able to write my first simulation program in C++. Although authors use C language and global data for simulation state, you can easily apply the concept of simulation state to any object-oriented language and replace global simulation state with object state.

A useful reference

Purchased this book in 1994 when spreadsheet modeling was no longer sufficient. This book gives a good top down view of what's involved in getting mathematically correct results (called verification, ensuring that the problem is being solved correctly). I found particularly useful the sections on variance reduction and output data reduction techniques. Validation (ensuring that the correct problem is being solved) is still the modelers job.
People with technical (mathematical) backgrounds should find this book relatively easy reading. Non-technical (management) types will get bogged down in the first chapter. As in so many things, the devil's in the (mathematical) details.
I basically used the book as a guide to writing an OO-based simulation tool (I ignored most of the included code examples), successfully implementing many of the techniques therein suggested. Where there wasn't sufficient detail, I found references to be sufficient. I still use the text as a reference.

Complete handbook of discrete-event simulation modeling

If you're a working stiff now, but you were a student
as I was, who sent stuff "down the memory hole," only to
discover years later that you really needed to DO
simulation--AARGHH!!!--then Law and Kelton's book is
what you'll need close at hand.

The coverage is complete, including basic material
on input probability distributions; random number generators
and testing (most useful for students); and output data
analysis. Solid, more practice-oriented chapters cover
variance reduction, experimental design (could borrow
more from Kleijnen's work), and software. A final chapter
gives an in-depth approach to manufacturing simulation.

Unfortunately, some material is dated. For example,
the software chapter addresses SIMAN/Cinema, which
Systems Modeling Corporation has (thankfully!) replaced
with ARENA (though SIMAN is still the basic simulation
language). The book gives overviews of several
simulation modeling languages; practitioners doing
trade studies choosing "the corporate simulation tool"
will be grateful for this ecumenicism.

The chapter covering validation and
verification could afford to borrow more from current
software engineering practice. Also, simulation modeling
approaches for network computing and communications
would comprise a good extra chapter (Law gives a short
course on the subject).

Law and Kelton isn't light reading, but it's not a dry
handbook, either. If you've had some light programming
experience and vaguely recall your stats class, you'll find
it approachable.

But this book is mostly the timeless stuff you'll need to
get your work done. With the recent proliferation of
inexpensive simulation software, companies are thrusting
simulation work on engineers and system/software
analysts who have little or no training. They should keep
and use Law and Kelton's book, which provides both
good skills and a roadmap to laying out and finishing a
simulation project.

But I give Law and Kelton's book one of my highest
compliments: Expensive technical books
