THE WORLD'S FIRST NEWSPAPER WOMAN JOURNALIST

Adela Rogers St. Johns was William Randolph Hearst's right arm female journalist during the heyday of the Hearst Newspapers across the country. She wrote in a manner, both in her columns , screenplays, and books that give the reader a sense she is actually sitting and talking in the room with you, and indeed maybe she is in this short novel dealing with contact with her dead son Bill, by his sister Elaine.
Certainly, Mrs. Rogers makes the reading and you, a comfortable and enjoyable experience. This particular book deals with Adela Rogers St. Johns contacting the dead. A very personal account of her only son's death, and the psychic contact he made through his sister Elaine, and Adela Rogers St. Johns daughter, after his early death during World War II in England. Another brief account of Bill's death is also in "The Honeycomb" (an autobiography by Mrs. St. Johns), and a very poignant account of a visit by Hollywood Director of "Gone With the Wind", and the "Wizard of Oz", Victor Fleming, is quite interesting in the emotional support Mr. Fleming gave to Mrs. Rogers at the time of receiving her son's personal belongings from the Military via mail after his death.
This type of book is not Adela Rogers St. Johns usual forte, but none the less, the inimitable style of writing is still there, and really she was quite broad in her writing skills, and interests. I found this to be a very interesting account of contact from the dead from someone who would never just make it up, and also would be objective enough to be honest about the experience.
Adela Rogers St. Johns learned the skill of writing from the best at the time of her heyday, which actually extended from the 1920's (she actually went to work for Mr. Hearst in 1919 at the Examiner in Los Angeles) until her death at the age of 94 in 1988. Her father, Earl Rogers, and the subject of another book (Final Verdict) was one of the most noted trial Lawyers in the United States during his lifetime, and quite the showman during his trials. This book could also be considered Part I of her autobiography as it includes her life's story from birth until her employment with William Randolph Hearst. Mrs. Rogers came out of retirement at the age of 82 to cover the Patricia Hearst kidnapping case.
Adela Rogers St. Johns starred as herself in Warren Beatty's successful 1981 film "REDS", and would later be seen in countless interviews in Kevin Brownlow's exceptional 13 part documentary entitled, HOLLYWOOD, THE SILENT YEARS, which aired on Public Educational Television in the !980's and now out on VHS, Laserdisc, and to a limited extent, DVD.
From Screenplays for Greta Garbo at MGM Studios in the 1920's (She wrote "The Single Standard", later turned into the MGM picture of the same name with Greta Garbo and Johnny Mack Brown), to interviews with Kevin Brownlow in the 1960's for his later serial on the early days of Hollywood, to assisting her daughter in the writing of articles for Religious Science Publications, Adela Rogers St. Johns never fails to please and make you the reader feel she is actually sitting and talking in the room with you.

Wonderful, wonderful book.

This book is hard to find but is a great (true) story regarding communication from loved ones who have passed on. There are many books on this topic but I like this one as kind of an introduction for those who are skeptical but hopeful. Adela Rogers St. John's is very credible and her story is too.
