Evolutionary biologist and spacecraft consultant Pellegrino ( Chariots of Apollo , etc.) celebrates the importance of oceanographic exploration in this personalsometimes pretentious and repetitiousreflection on the wreck of the Titanic and the long-awaited discovery of its site 73 years later. The book contains a gripping dramatization of the 1912 disaster, enhanced by unpublished diaries, transcripts of wireless transmissions and interviews of survivors. Woven into the account of the sinking is the story of oceanographer Robert Ballard, whose team of men and robots struggled to find the location of the wreck and now work to protect the site from commercial exploitation. Ruminating on parallels between the Titanic disaster and the loss of the Challenger spaceshuttle (overconfident builders and unexpected ice played a part in both tragedies), Pellegrino argues that exploration of hitherto unknown ocean depths may yield more secrets about the universe than space exploration. Science writer Pellegrino worked with Bob Ballard to find the sunken wreck of the Titanic in 1987. He looks at the story from a new perspective, comparing the ship to the Challenger space shuttle. Just as the Titantic was deemed unsinkable, so the Challenger was considered virtually fail-safe. Pellegrino's book is a complement to Ballard's Discovery of the Titanic ( LJ 1/88). Pellegrino concentrates on the crew's reaction to the discovery, delving into Ballard's character and that of his colleagues. Pellegrino also draws on new information to give a more thorough explanation of the destruction that the ship endured and a vivid reconstruction of its last moments. Realistic dialogue is re-created from historical records, interviews, and passenger diaries. This should have wide appeal in public libraries. John Kenny, San Francisco P.L.

A Haunting and absorbing history

Although this book is supposedly about the sinking and finding of the Titanic the true story in this book is about the effect the Titanic has had on all those who have been in contact with her. Charles Pellegrino's emotional narrative on both the sinking and the discovery of this special ship keep this from being just another dry documentary. Of special intrest (especially in retrospect) is his description of how anyone who has come in contact with her (Titanic) has had their life altered by the experience. Remember this book was written BEFORE the James Cameron blockbuster and look at the effect Titanic has had on his life. Recommended for anyone who is a Titanic buff.

A most interesting book

Mr. Pellegrino has written an excellent book about that tragic ship and about the background of the men who found her. A must have for any serious TITANIC "buff". It is also a great companion book to Dr. Ballards "Dicovery of the TITANIC" as it offers insights not contained in his book.

A fascinating reading

Although I wasn't fond of Pellegrino using figures from the Greek Mythology to describe what happened with Titanic, I still loved the way he narrated on the Titanic.
He has described the tour to the ship in lovely way describing how Robert Ballard have been paralysed by the effect the ship had on him. After all - that was the first time they have ever dived to see the ship and every detail of the dive have been narrated - the minute they founded one of the boilers, the steering Wheel...
Pellegrino IS a science man while Ballard is not, and I could feel it in the way he tried to make sense of how the experience have reshaped him. Seems the only one unaffected by Titanic was the one who navigated Jason Jr...He has been more occupied trying to find the treasure inside a safe they founded on the ship, rather than not trying to open it as probably what Ballard had in mind.
The book is a great prologue to other books by this authr which I know I am going to check. But it was fascinated Reading which also gave me a glimpse into the 80's(my childhood years) Undersea filming Technologies. Thanks to Pellegrino, this trip to the great ship was possible as he was the keyman in the mission of finding the ship. This is a must read book!

Nothing else like it

Only a single printing of this book was published in 1973, at $35 per copy ($170 in today's dollars). Those who missed the boat have had to content with finding a local library that carried the title, or buying a deaccessioned volume from used book dealers at 10-20x the original retail (2-4x adjusted for inflation).

As the other reviewer noted, this is a comprehensive reference manual, a chronological survey of male fashion trends in the mostly Anglo-American cultural sphere through 3/4 of the 20th Century, from underwear to formal wear, from spats to cravats, from full body bathing suits to polyester leisure suits. The authors did not pretend to teach good taste (though they were clearly affected by the contemporary "Peacock Revolution"), as Flusser and Roetzel (and Andy Gilchrist) aimed to do through their popular guides; what they did offer in abundance was a historical perspective on the evolution of sartorial design. By gaining this perspective, the reader would have a more confident grasp on what 'good' taste was, is, and will likely be (given the cyclic nature of fashion).

Is this confidence worth $300 - $500? If one is a working member of the fashion or entertainment industry, almost certainly. A history buff? Quite possibly. Someone looking for guidance on what to wear to work or a wedding reception? Look online (several informative websites and Wikipedia articles appear to draw heavily from this book in their background sections), or buy something authored by Flusser, Roetzel, or Gilchrist.

After waiting patiently for years, I finally came across a copy offered at roughly 1x inflation-adjusted original retail; unless and until McGraw Hill decides to reissue this title in e-book format for a pittance, it will remain one of my all time best finds.

The Grimoire of men's classic fashion culture

This tome is the gold standard of resources for learning most everything there is to know about classic men's dress and fashion. More of a reference work than a cover to cover read, this resource answers most of those questions that would leave most classic men's dress mentors scratching their heads. Wonderful illustrations, sketches, glossary of terms, and evolutionary commentary of most every item that can be named in the male wardrobe.

A rarity to find in any condition, but be prepared to pay handsomely for the information contained herein. This book is a much valued and used trophy in my collection of lore in the art of classic men's dress. Couldn't recommend it with higher marks.

A complete reference for Basis Consultants and Administrator

The author of any technical reference book faces the challenge of providing the reader with, on the one hand, enough detail to cover the topics adequately and on the other, the need to rein back on minutiae. At the same time, topics should be covered at a level of detail consistent with the subject. This is largely subjective but could mean the difference between a volume 2 to 3 inches thick and a volume 2 to 3 foot thick. Mr Hernandez has managed to keep his authoritative work to a manageable size yet maintain a level of detail beyond which only OSS, SAP Developers and possibly the SAP Help would answer your query.
In his second Edition of what has become a standard R/3 text for many SAP R/3 Basis Consultants, José Hernandez has updated terminology to suit versions up to 4.6 including the new features offered by the later versions. Although the bulk of the text covers the Basis R/3 system one of the most notable changes is the inclusion of Windows NT. Some of the new R/3 features covered are the Profile Generator, the new Object-based monitoring system, ASAP and the Transport Management System (TMS).
The first 5 chapters of the book cover the conceptual overview of the R/3 product including general product information, the software as a client-server system, in-memory and disk usage architecture, installation concepts, and some essential "using" information. Chapters 6 onwards, including the appendices each describe an R/3 topic in detail. A complete Table of Contents is likely to be available on many on-line book stores.
Typical of the material offered in the second edition is the excellent coverage of The SAP Printing System. The chapter covers a conceptual overview describing the Spooler's place in the architecture, its relationship to the operating system, how to set up additional spoolers, using the spooler and the various objects which contribute towards the printing system. José then traverses each of the screens and menu options associated with setting up printer devices, front end printing (SAPLPD), Temse, Fax and administration tasks . When describing how to set up a printer device, each field on each screen is described. Dropdown options are each described in detail. The chapter also includes many operational tips and examples.
Having used the first edition of R/3 Handbook for the past 2 years and being the primary text I used to pass the R/3 basis certification test, I obtained the second edition the moment it became available. I recommend it to anyone who needs a ready-to-hand comprehensive text for SAP R/3 Basis.

Highly recommded for R/3 Administrators

I have been doing R/3 Technical Consulting for two years and this is my one and only reference book. It explains the basics of the system architecture and covers major areas, such as user management, authorization profiles, spool system, background processing, basic system monitoring and database concepts (Oracle only).
The information presened in this book is well organized and very helpful on the day-to-day system management.
Don't buy this book if you are looking for detailed information on system installation, ABAP programming and performance tuning.

Great Overview Without Getting Bogged in Details

One of my long standing complaints about computer software books is that they so often eliminate the first forty pages or so that explain just what this software is and what is supposed to do. This book (at 606 pages it's a lot more than forty pages) is essentially the front end description that explains what SAP ERP is and what it si supposed to do.

The subtitle of the book is 'Essential Skills for SAP Technical Consultants.' It appears to be aimed at the individual who is trying to decide what SAP can do for them. It's much less concerned with the detail of how to do it.

I found this to be of great help, as SAP is a huge software system. It has perhaps a thousand components (does anyone really know) from various vendors that can be tied together to handle most ERP problems. If you're going to use SAP, just which of all these components are you going to pull together to solve your particular set of problems.

After you know what you're trying to do, then there are other books and manuals that will give you the details about how to do it. So if at this point you are wondering just what is the difference between SAP R/3, and mySAP.com, and SAP Web Application Server, and SAP NetWeaver, this is the place to start. All in all, it's good to see such a book. I hope this is a trend getting started and that we can see other books coming on other big software packages that's more aimed at what can be done.

My son needs some real education in math (he is 7.5 years old in second grade). I use this book to set the curriculum and scope of teaching him math. This book serves as the basis to learn algebra. So far he loves it and understands math is not all about just addition/subtraction/multiplication and division.

This book is possibly the best dynamics books I've laid my hands on. I am an engineering student using this for a first-year Mechanics course, and this book is a lifesaver.

Each chapter starts with 'questions' like 'give a definition of moment of inertia' and then proceeds to actually explain the concepts as opposed to starting with lengthy derivations. The text is clear, aided by diagrams and the derivations that are provided are usually easy to follow.

But the real gem comes afterwards - the author starts with small, fairly simple problems in the beginning, and then each successive problem builds on the concepts learned from the earlier problems. In this way, one learns progressively, as opposed to having all the information presented at once. After six or seven questions, you will be solving more advanced questions. It is *essential* to work through the problems in order unless one already has a thorough knowledge of the topics covered in those problems. The worked solutions don't just give a method, they give explanations and the rationale behind solving it that particular way.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough - I went from dreading Dynamics to loving the challenge.

Be aware though that this book does not cover orbital dynamics.

Not 100% Helpful

I purchased this solution's manual to assist me with Beer & Johnston's Vector Mechanics for Engineers. Although the solutions they provide therein are clear and complete, you should not expect to find a solution to a specific problem bedeviling you. I spent a great deal of time looking for a similar solved problem from which I could harvest the technique and apply to my situation but, 70% of the time I was unsuccessful. In the absence of a solutions manual from the publisher and limited professor office hours, this may be your only recourse. Good Luck!

Very Useful

I got this book in hopes that it would help me learn faster than I was with my previous textbook. The other text I was using could get rather confusing not too mention some of the practice problems were flawed. One of the more significant cases was a problem in my old text had inverted their axis reducing the derived equation to rubbish when I would need to apply it to another problem. Granted all I would have to do is flip the signs, but who would teach students down is up? Now the 700 problem Vector Mechanics book is awesome! It has a ton of practice questions and shows the step by step process on a few, which really helps me as a visual learner. The only way this could be anymore useful is if it was in a digital format for a laptop or something.

the book way earlier than it was expected, which was something good as i needed it right away. It also came in perfect conditions and very well protected.
The book itself is kind of hard to go through but i needed it for my class.

Not everyone is so smart

For a start, there are certain things I always look for in a textbook. I like to learn both the theory and the application. I like to know how to apply what I learn to a real life setting - which I believe is the sole purpose of any textbook.

Terry Sturm's book fulfills the first part very well - his theoretical overview and insights into open channel flow equations are fantastical. We have integrations, advanced formulae, control volume diagrams and definition of equations. Linear momentum, vector sum of forces blah blah blah.

What we don't have however, are explanations of what everything means (which I suspect is left up to the Professor of the Day, which in my case is a blathering old fogey). It's just regurgitated facts. After the end of an oversaturated chapter, guess what. You don't get examples, instead you get a whole set of problems (with no solutions) - which you are expected to solve by deriving some other equation from the already extensive list of textbook equations. Makes sense? I think not.

Unless you come into the field of open channel hydraulics with a foreknowledge of fundamentals, don't expect anything to make any sense. That plus the outrageous price of the book makes me want to return this.

Diagrams Please!

The text was ok except for the fact that the chapter problems did not include any illustrations. A lot of time the students had to guess at exactly what Sturm meant. Towards the end of the course it became routine for us to work the problem first and then check in the teacher's key to make sure that we set it up the way Sturm meant for us to. The class was made of seniors and graduate students.
Another problem is that often the student had to infer how Sturm wanted the reader to use the numerous charts based on empirical data. Sturm wasn't always explicit and that caused problems in getting correct values off them.
To be fair, this is a first edition and there are bound to be errors. Hopefully, the next edition is better. My professor loved this book stating that "Sturm gets to the point." He used Chow and Henderson's texts to supplement this book which helped a lot. There were computer programs and examples of their use in the book which I enjoyed and will prove useful to me in the future.

Outstanding reference; a must for the saltwater angler

George Roberts, known in the fly-fishing world by the affectionate name "F.F.", has composed a masterpiece of both biology and fly-fishing tactics. Incredibly detailed, a virtual master class on paper, this is well worth wading through incredible scientific detail embodied by the author. A worthwhile and enriching read for any one who is serious in their quest for fish. An excellent choice for the saltwater angler in your life. This is a book to be treasured and passed on from generation to generation. After finishing this fine work, you will be able to say "Just show me them fish". His video is also a must-have for the serious caster. If you only buy ONE fly fishing book this year, buy this one.
