Great for conversation reference or class...

...but not really to learn on your own. We used this text in my University German class. In class, we groaned when we had to do the chapter on car parts (I mean I don't really even know what a spark plug is in English!), but the book does teach you important vocabulary while utilizing a thematic approach. It is one of the texts I always take with me for reference. Also, for a classroom environment, the book gives situations and asks questions which are good starting points for conversational practice.

What can I say? It's a text by Rudin... therefore, PERFECT!!!

This is the text that is properly referred to as "baby Rudin" (as opposed to "papa Rudin"). While it is better to have had at least a senior level course in Real/Complex Analysis and maybe in Foundations (Set Theory, Logic, etc.) PRIOR to using the text, it is by no means necessary. Rudin uses just the right combination of teaching and intellectual "gap crossing" to provide the maximum educational benefit (mathematically speaking)to the student or casual reader.

This is not the edition used by most academic programs, and is a difficult text to read. This does not offer an intuitive way to learn. This is a text meant for people who have already mastered analysis, not for those trying to wrap their heads around it. Not a good reference tool.

Pretty good on a dry topic

This book is no walk in the park, but I was able to fully understand all the topics we covered in the book, in detail, just from the text of the book. This book, and the class that went along with it, took my skills at proofs to a new level. Not exactly what I would have expected on a class on Advanced Operating Systems.

This book very much exemplifies why CS has it roots in mathematics, and if you are looking for a book on applied advanced operating systems concepts, this isn't the book for you. This book covers, in depth, the algorithms needed for advanced operating systems and their proof of correctness.

You can build fault tolerant distributed systems by leveraging other peoples implementations of the algorithms covered in this book, but without understanding the material covered, creating your own working system would likely be wrought with hidden errors.

Simple to understand; has good examples

This book is very useful to get a good idea about the advanced issues in OS. But the only problem is that no particular topic could receive in-depth coverage. Perhaps it is a common problem for all books. Too much has been learnt about OS to be put in 500 pages. I recommend this to anyone who wants to get the gist without plodding through miles and miles of jargon and advanced mathematics.

A good comprehensive book.

Overall a reasonable text to learn Distributed OS concepts. Its coverage of distributed algorithms is good. I would recommend reading the original papers for a better understanding though. The chapters are well organized and it is a good intruductory book for a grad student. Its coverage of distributed database concepts is rather superficial though.

These views, according to the author, are at least partially to blame for the financial inequities that African Americans can face. Stephens urges readers to break away from such preconceptions as assuming that the stock market is only for white people or that "looking rich means being rich." In a straightforward style, Stephens says that all African Americans can take charge of their finances, provided they make conscious efforts to incorporate sound financial habits into their everyday life. She walks readers through the basics of personal finance: setting goals, working with budgets, getting loans, buying insurance, planning for retirement, etc. The advice is solid and easy to understand. She includes practical information such as where to find low-cost credit cards, the difference in monthly payments on a variable-rate vs. a fixed-rate mortgage and how to cut insurance premium costs. Interspersed throughout the book are profiles of African Americans as well as sidebars on black-owned companies. Understanding wealth for the African American Community

I was elated to read a financial book by a saavy African American female who knows her stuff. This is a book I would recommend to everyone,especially those of of us in the Black community. We need to hear this message, that offers us a provocative look at our hangups with money, spending habits, etc. It provides a rich historical background along with the necessary steps to build wealth. The focus is on changing the mindset of our community from income to wealth. It is written for laymen and is easy to grasp. There is no reason for us to remain ignorant about money when we have the kind of sensible knowledge that Ms. Brooke Stephens has given us in this exceptional book.

Written in a manner that black people can understand

I have purchased several financial advice books in the past year to get on the road to financial success, especially the books by author Suze Orman, who is an excellent author. But this book tackles the same issues with an African-American perspective that is very beneficial. Ms. Stephens really gets to the "real reasons" why collectively, African-Americans do not have the financial security and the clout that we should have in this country. My grandparents who have always been ardent investors always said the old saying "Black people put their money on their back, whereas other races put it in the bank." I am so glad that the author addressed this phenomena that is so prevalent in our community. We all know people in our community who have this problem..for example, when I attended Howard University, I knew numerous students that could barely get financial aid for school but they would work three jobs to pay for a leather coat and a Gucci bag, but the international students who were strapped for cash would work three jobs to pay for SCHOOL. This book should be required reading for all children and their parents!!!!!

SCHAUM'S OUTLINES MOLECULAR AND CELL BIOLOGY

I consider molecular and cell biology an excellent review book for people who want an introduction of the field. Also it can help readers who want to refresh their knowledge. It is well organized, in fourteen different chapters, with multilple review questions and answers in each of them. I found the coverage of each chapter comprehensive. Objective questions at the end of each chapter helped to assess your level of understanding. I certainly recommend this book to people who study biological related sciences.

Painful and Worthless

I bought this book in a bundle with two other Schaum's Outlines: one in Biochemistry and one in Genetics. I had intended to use them as a review in preparation for the Biochemistry, Molecular, and Cell Biology Subject GRE. I have been sorely disappointed. First of all, this book is out of date. It was written in 1996 and the field of molecular biology has transformed in multiple ways over the past 13 years. I continually had to question some of the conclusions of the book across multiple chapters. More often than not I went back to my text books from undergrad to review the topics and what has changed. I eventually skipped chapters all together and just read those in my old textbooks. But not only is this book out of date, it is also poorly written. Topics don't flow, bullets are confusing. The general narative of the book is convoluted and confusing. I've finally moved on to the biochemistry book, and I'm starting to find the same issues. I am disappointed that I actually spent money on this book. Look for other reivews, or simply look at a textbook. This book is not worth it.

Highly recommended!

I tried several books to start learning FEM but was never satisfied. Some of them were overloaded with theory or essentially no theory and all software application. Finally I come across this one! A very good book to learn FEM subject for the person who already has basic knowledge of mechanics, strength of materials and matrix calculus. It's really clearly written with a very good and detailed explanation of discussed topics. All the chapters are followed by numerous examples to be solved by the reader. I was able to deal with them using the equations and examples given in regular text. The book is "software-independent" - it's not oriented towards any specific FEM package; more stress is put on general FEM theory and exemplary applications. There are several handy appendixes which helps you work through matrix calculus, equations of elasticity & solution techniques for linear algebraic eqs. Highly recommended!

I hate this book.

This is one of the most difficult textbooks to read that I've ever encountered. I think some of that has to do with the fact that the material is hard to begin with, but even still: The book constantly references equations by number (eq 5.14) and does so dozens of pages removed. That alone is super obnoxious.

Phenomenal condition

Dr. Hutton was my professor for M.E. 474 [Finite Element Analysis] elective counting towards a Masters in Mechanical Engineering. We worked off his notes in 1992 before he got his work published. Brilliant man and no less quality of technical publication.

RIP Dr. Hutton.

Check It Out From Your Library

The book is your source to a plethora of additional problems. Yet don't expect the exam problems to be similar to those you find in this Schaum series. You might find some of these problems extra strenuous or over-simplified. For all the major functional groups, the book does provide lots of practice problems in reaction products, reactivity, and stereochemistry. You might need to cover up the solutions which immediately follow the questions. Students should foucs on soloving the mechanism-type of problems from textbooks before looking at this book. Check this out from your library!

Is an okay book

I got this product as a supplement for my organic chemistry class. At the end I did not use it as much as I expected. It does have a lot of problems and exercises but it wasn't the approach that my professors gave. Therefore, if you are looking for a book with a lot of problems to practice for your organic chemistry class this is the book. But if you are looking a supplement for your course, find another one.

Valuable supplementary resource

As I understand it, Rorabaugh wrote this book as a supplementary resource for robotics hobbyists, rather than as a primary tool meant to stand on its own. It is valuable within this context. If you have a background in basic electronics and robotics, or are reading this book concurrently with others in these areas, Rorabaugh's book will make sense and add to your understanding. Yes, it is true that I have seen clearer discussions of vector math in other books. The examples on pages 25 and 89 are not very clear. Rorabaugh uses terms like 'annulus' (p. 108) without explaining them ('annulus' refers to any ring or ringlike mark), and on p. 109, he refers to planetary gear trains, which are not described and explained until p. 118. All this being said, for those interested in topics such as levers, gears, wheels and pulleys, encoders, solenoids, springs, and linkages, Rorabaugh will provide you with the introductory theory, formulas, and design ideas you are seeking. I thought the section on pneumatics was good, and I found materials in that section that I have not seen duplicated elsewhere. There are plenty of drawings, and the explanations are concise. You can spend your time hunting through various engineering texts and scattered Web sites and numerous other places for the same material, or you can get a concise introduction to these topics in this one book, and use it as the basis for learning more. I opted for the book, and I am pleased with my decision.

Great Intro. to Mechanical Design

The book is a great intro to basic mechanical design needed to make simple devices with DC motors, gears, pullies, and pneumatic pistons. The author covers the theory in an easy to understand fashion in a very practical way. I use it in my freshmen level design class, where students build simple robots.

Nothing practical

I bought this book, but regretted it. There is nothing practical in this book. Mostly introduces lots and lots of different, unrelated, mechanical things such as gears, pulleys, etc. Has a completely useless chapter on walking robots, mostly about linkabes.
