About the Author
Don began teaching in a preschool while he was an undergraduate. He subsequently taught children with disabilities, adults with disabilities, high school mathematics, and college mathematics. Although each position offered different challenges, it was always breaking a challenging lesson into teachable components that he most enjoyed.

It was at Clackamas Community College that he found his professional niche. The community college allowed him to focus on teaching within a department that constantly challenged faculty and students to expect more. Under the guidance of Jim Streeter, Don learned to present his approach to teaching in the form of a textbook. Don has also been an active member of many professional organizations. He has been president of ORMATYC, AMATYC committee chair, and ACM curriculum committee member. He has presented at AMATYC, ORMATYC, AACC, MAA, ICTCM, and a variety of other conferences.

Above all, he encourages you to be involved, whether as a teacher or as a learner. Whether discussing curricula at a professional meeting or homework in a cafeteria, it is the process of communicating an idea that helps one to clarify it.

Stefan began teaching math and science in New York City middle schools. He also taught math at the University of Oregon, Southeast Missouri State University, and York County Technical College. Currently, Stefan is a member of the mathematics faculty at Clackamas Community College where he has found a niche, delighting in the CCC faculty, staff, and students. Stefan’s own education includes the University of Michigan (BGS, 1988), Brooklyn College (CUNY), and the University of Oregon (MS, 1996).

Stefan is currently serving on the AMATYC Executive Board as the organization’s Northwest Vice President. He has also been involved with ORMATYC, NEMATYC, NCTM, and the State of Oregon Math Chairs group, as well as other local organizations. He has applied his knowledge of math to various fi elds, using statistics, technology, and web design. More personally, Stefan and his wife, Peggy, try to spend time enjoying the wonders of Oregon and the Pacifi c Northwest. Their activities include scuba diving, self-defense training, and hiking.

Barry has enjoyed teaching mathematics to a wide variety of students over the years. He began in the fi eld of adult basic education and moved into the teaching of high school mathematics in 1977. He taught high school math for 11 years, at which point he served as a K-12 mathematics specialist for his county. This work allowed him the opportunity to help promote the emerging NCTM standards in his region.

In 1990, Barry began the next portion of his career, having been hired to teach at Clackamas Community College. He maintains a strong interest in the appropriate use of technology and visual models in the learning of mathematics.

Throughout the past 32 years, Barry has played an active role in professional organizations. As a member of OCTM, he contributed several articles and activities to the group’s journal. He has presented at AMATYC, OCTM, NCTM, ORMATYC, and ICTCM conferences. Barry also served 4 years as an offi cer of ORMATYC and participated on an AMATYC committee to provide feedback to revisions of NCTM’s standards.

Great book if you're interested in social psych. Gives a solid lit review up through the early 90s. If you're interested in more contemporary topics, you should start somewhere else.

The best social psychology textbook that's never been updated

Abraham Tesser did a fantastic job of assembling the top names in social psychology in 1994 to write this book. Scholars such as Susan Fiske, Daniel Gilbert, and Robert Cialdini wrote a chapter each on the core topics of social psychology. They also presented a lecture, and the complete 12-part lecture series is available on video.

The only problem is, this book gives a fantastic insight into where social psychology was a decade ago, but much research has since been conducted. This is such a pity, because there are few social psychology textbooks that are written for students in 3rd-year to graduate-level courses. Most social psychology books are directed to either introductory students, the general public, or academic audiences. This book filled a gap (catering for advanced students), but has now fallen a little behind the times. It gets five stars for what it was, and for the fact that most of its content is still relevant.

Top-notch, up-to-date, scholarly, yet entertaining

     It is rare to come across a scholarly textbook of research that is relatively understandable to lay people and beginning researchers. Yet Tesser's _Advanced Social Psychology_ succeeds where others fail. It is unlike other disciplinary or subdisciplinary textbooks, written by a single author covering tons of ground. This book is an anthology of reviews describing cutting-edge research in Social Psychology by those who are doing the cutting - the most prominent researchers in the field describing the state of their specialty. So while one does not get the perfectly smooth ('processed') feel of a textbook written by a single author, one gets an intimate feel for what is really being done, and a feel for what is on the horizon, for each line of inquiry by the people who are most interested in the area.
     Another outstanding facet of this anthology is the vibrance held within its pages, precisely because it was not written by a single author. Each chapter displays the personality of its author(s). And each is written with the student in mind, not only the attempt to relay information. The book, depite its relative brevity, is filled with (often humorous) examples and illustrations. Terminology, critical to any discipline, is spelled out at the beginning to assure a common ground between author and reader. And, as a book on Social Psychology, the research areas are incredibly interesting and personally relevant: Attitude Change (R. E. Petty), Social Influence (R. B. Cialdini), Attraction and Relationships (M. S. Clark & S. P. Pataki), and Prejudice (P. G. Devine), to name a few. Each chapter educates and intrigues the reader into the complexities of our daily lives that comprise modern social psychological research. This is a must-read for anyone who wishes to gain a better understanding of how the world works and appreciates intellectual challenges. And Tesser's _Advanced Social Psychology_ is the clear choice for both undergraduate and graduate courses in the area.

About the Author
Stuart B. Schwartz is the George Burton Adams Professor of History and chair of the Council on Latin American and Iberian Studies at Yale University. His many books include "All Can Be Saved: Religious Tolerance and Salvation in the Iberian Atlantic World."

Craig Conley is an established teacher and author with a long history of writing for schools and public libraries. He is currently a consulting editor for McGraw-Hill and Globe Fearon publishers. For nine years he was an instructor of composition, literature, and study skills at universities and community colleges in Tennessee, Virginia, and Florida. Jeffrey Katz is founder and president of Scientific Consultants Services, Inc., a firm which provides custom programming and publicly available software for traders. He specializes in applying artificial intelligence technologies to trading and has developed two AI-based trading software programs, N-TRAIN and LOGINVOLVE. He has published a number of articles in Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities, PC II, and Neuro Ve$t Journal. He wrote two chapters in the book, Virtual Trading. He holds a masters degree in mathematics and a Ph.D. in psychophysiology from the University of Lancaster in England. He is a member of MENSA. Donna McCormick is vice president of Scientific Consultants Services, Inc. She specializes in the design of trading systems using Omega Research's products, the leading provider of system development tools in the trading industry. Good principles, good start for programming systems

The authors cover the ground of "Build a Trading Program" quite effectively. They have presented results using systems built around traditional technical indicators and their own "standard exit" method. These they use to show how to evaluate systems. This brief summary understates considerably the material presented on entries.
Differing entry techniques (limit, stop & market)are examined in the context of each "system." The reader is thus exposed to both the methodology of statistical evaluation and to "how it feels" to use this technique or that.
The authors actually start the book with an introduction to data types, availability and time frame; the bare-bones of needed statistical material; simulators (programs to simulate trading); and, optimizers and optimizing. I scanned the material, due to my own familiarity with it. It seems like good background. One point I've not seen elsewhere is the suggestion to optimize for high Student-t scores, an excellent idea.
Exits and exit techniques are dealt with, although less voluminously than entry techniques. One reason for that is the difference in amount written on the two. Everyone who wants to sell you a system, be it a book or a seminar, will emphasize entry technique. Very little has been written on exits, which are a more difficult sell. Katz & McCormick have presented the basic categories of exits. While "basic categories" doesn't sound like much, it is more than I can recall appearing elsewhere in print. These categories are the building blocks for the second most important part of a system: exits. (More important is money management.) Here, as throughout the book, C+ code is included, allowing one to implement one's own approaches.
Another section, also with code, is use of genetic algorithms in system design. This is one of the best sections on GA's in trading that I've seen. It is not exhaustive (thank heavens) but will get you started without forcing a reading of Goldberg's text on GA's. Another departure from the norm is a short presentation of using GA's to optimize for the elements of the system, not for the actual output, a superior idea.
As the authors point out, exits are far more important than entry. A test system I wrote recently entered almost randomly after it had determined volatility was sufficiently high. Although not sophisticated, the exits were other than random. Although less than 20% accurate, it produced very substantial profits. Actual implementation is a bit trickier; real markets don't always provide the smooth entry and exit of systems testing. Be that as it may, the essential point remains: exit and money management are where the profits are. Entries are for seminar junkies and would be traders.
If trading is what you want to do, and computer-driven systems are what you will use, this is a book that you should read. It is the best I've seen (and I've seen a few). The other pieces to the trading puzzle are psychology (Ruth Roosevelt) and money management (Ralph Vince - not perfect, but a necessary read).

Indispensable for automated trading system builders!

Most books on trading assume either that the reader never got to college, or else that they never left. This one, however, is different, rapidly bringing the technical but non-specialist reader up to speed in the principled construction of automated trading engines.
If you have a reasonably numerate background, perhaps with some software development experience, and have found yourself drawn to the concept of constructing your own mechanical trading system, you owe it to yourself to read this text. Quite simply, it is superb. The authors begin by describing the core components of a sound system, including the application of statistical inference and the selection of appropriate sample sets for back-testing. They then go on to provide a set of normalised comparisons of various trading 'rules' for entry and exit (e.g., breakouts, MAVs, oscillators, neural net predictors, etc.) together with discussion of optimisation systems (such as simulated annealing and genetic refinement). The actual results of some 'respectable' rulesets you may find rather shocking! And if you are only dimly aware of what genetic algorithms can offer the modern trader, you should buy this book for that reason alone.
The style of the text is clear and unstuffy, with chapters of readable length and well-structured content. The reader who wants to learn more will find this book an ideal jumping off point, since many references to the literature are provided, but an excessive technical background is not assumed, and the work is for the most part self-contained.
The only minor issues are 1) the title is a somewhat misleading; you will not find an A-Z list of trading strategies here, but rather a more select discussion of the techniques (and the validity of certain *classes* of strategy) involved in building viable automated trading systems; and 2) there is some ugleeee typesetting of mathematical formulae in Fortran (!). However, neither points really count for more than nitpicking in contrast to the value of the text overall.
In summary, there is real content here - described and justified, if you are an engineer like me, through the sort of scientific analysis and rigour that creates more excitement than a million words of hype. Fed up with TradeStation? Writing your own system in C++? In need of a bit of inspiration and guidance? If this sounds familiar, you want this book, believe me.
IMHO, it's a classic. Buy it.

A Complete Insight Into Encyclopedia of Trading Strategies

The Encyclopedia Of Trading Strategies provides a solid foundation for developing the skills and knowledge base to develop one's own set of quantifiable trading rules and for developing a reliable trading "system."
The book begins laying the foundation with a description of the tools necessary to construct a system. Data -- the cleaner, naturally, the better -- is the point of departure. A discussion of simulators -- software that allows you to simulate trading -- ensues and walks you through the mechanics of interpreting output and determining their reliability and power.
A discussion of optimizers, or tools that find the best possible solutions to a problem follows, critically describing the major types of optimization and products available and how to achieve success, or failure, in their implementation.
Statistics for systems analysis are the next tool detailed. Without statistics, there is no way of knowing whether the profits (or losses) resulting from a tested system are real, an artifact of sampling or chance.
With the tools required for systems testing in place, the book launches into the discussion of its primary focus, the study of entries and exits. Ultimately, and deceptively simply, a trading system is nothing more than a system of entries and exits (at a profit or at a loss).
The Encyclopedia of Trading Strategies is something of a misnomer in that the title leaves the impression that one will find a catalogue of trading strategies and methods that the reader can scrutinize to extract specific techniques and use as a reference guide. In fact, the book provides the framework and background-knowledge necessary to design, test and analyze one's own trading system and could have as easily been dubbed A Primer On Developing Trading Systems.

The book is very well written and organized, it contains valuable information on job hunting. Yet, I was very disappointed to find out that although the back cover claims to have "special tips for women only", I found NOTHING about it...... such claim is precisely what drove me to buy the book, since I am a woman. Anyway, the excellent examples in this book are absolutely professional, and the overall composition of the book is classy. It really helps job hunters to organize their thoughts and succeed in their job hunting campaign.

Great book for USMLE Step 1

This was a great book. I got it during second year of medical school. It has a lot of good cases and with Step 1 becoming case based, this was very useful. There are quesions and explanations after each case. I highly recommend it if you like to study by a case based method or if you are preparing for the boards Step I and/or II.

Question sets by organ system

This is a good book to review for the Step 1 of the USMLE. It is divided into 8 Organ system sections and each subsection consists of clinical scenarios describing a common disease that affects the specific organ system followed by 3 questions regarding the anatomy/physiology/normal processes involved plus one question about the pathophysiology. The explanations are OK. This books would be excellent if they had included at least 6 questions per case and if the explanations section had some diagrams.
