About the Author
Thomas Szirtes is a professional engineer who devotes his career to consulting, writing, and teaching. He is a former Senior Staff Engineer at SPAR Aerospace, Ltd. in Toronto, and was one of the project engineers of the Shuttle Robotic Manipulator Arm (CANADARM) project, for which he received NASA's Achievement Award. Dr. Szirtes has published over 60 scientific and engineering papers, as well as a college text on mathematical logic. He taught at the Technical University of Budapest, McGill University, and Loyola College in Montreal, and was a founding editor of the SPAR Journal of Engineering and Technology.

Something every technical profeesional should have

An incredibly easy book to read. I found I could go from section to section and extract the knowledge that needed at that time. Sometimes I just pick it up and open it at random and I often get something new out of it. After being exposed to this book you can see how dimensional analysis is something that most of us should be capable of applying to those problems that lend themselves to no other approach. The only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 was because I would have liked to see more financial examples and I don't think amperes should be considered a fundamental unit. One of the best technical books I have bought.

could be helpful

I bought this book for my husband to read since he is doing the remodeling and renovating of our 100+ year old home. He didn't look at it, and I ended up reading it. The book is well written, and I learned a lot from it. Unfortunately I am not a contractor, so I don't get any use from the information at all. The book is meant for general building contractors who are knew to the business, or maybe want some fresh ideas on how to win a job contract. If that sounds like you, I think you may find this book useful.

Unless you have NO construction experience, don't bother

It would almost seem like the title was trying to help sell the book as having something it didn't: insight to what contractors would benefit knowing in terms of cosmetic aspects of construction. In my opinion, good contractors have knowledge waaaaaay past this book. Chapter on basements starts out by saying they could spend several chapters on the topic and not do it justice. So, they stick to basics. I'd say, why bother if you can't cover things well? They say vinyl flooring and carpet are good choices, with carpet less so if there's a water problem in the basement. Duh! So goes the entire book. Yes, most of us know that floors, walls, and ceilings need finishing, and there are many types available. You're better off going to Lowe's or even Home Depot and getting advice from their interior finish experts.

As example of how the book could have been improved, the issue of water migration through slabs is overlooked by many contractors. This is a point to make. Also, they could have conveyed methods on how to test for moisture migrating up through a slab, in addition to clear cases of water intrusion. As a water intrusion expert, every (every) floor in So Cal I evaluated due to water damage coming up through the slab, didn't have an adequate vapor/water barrier. Sure, some adhesives are rated to serve as vapor barriers as well. There are so many variables involved in a successful application, IMO, contractor-to-contractor, this is one area I'd recommend belt-and-suspender approaches. Now, that is good info for a contrator about cosmetic renovation. Again, in my opinion.

It looks like something that was photo copied back in the 1970's on a machine that should have been retired. Very poor quality. I purchased a used book. I would have been very upset had I paid the new price of $24.95 for it.

I love this whole series, my children also enjoy them. The artwork is beautiful and engaging and they really motivate us to get out and learn about our world.

Priceless

I used this book to teach my second grader about the shore. Then we went to the shore and experienced it and collected samples. We had an awesome fun learning experience. This is my favorite one out of the series.

About the Author
Tracy D. Terrell (late) received his Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and published extensively in the area of Spanish dialectology. Professor Terrell’s publications on second-language acquisition are widely known in the United States and abroad.

Magdalena Andrade received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine. She has taught elementary and intermediate Spanish at San Diego State, UC Irvine, and UC Riverside, where she worked as a coordinator of the Teaching Assistant program.

Jeanne Egasse received her BA and MA in Spanish Linguistics from the University of California, Irvine. She has taught foreign language methodology courses and supervised teachers in training of foreign language methodology courses and ESOL at UC Irvine. She also serves as a consultant for local schools and universities on implementing the Natural Approach in the language classroom.

Elías Miguel Muñoz is a widely published prose writer and poet. He has a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Irvine, and has taught Spanish language and Latin American literature at the university level.l.

An excellent Spanish classroom program

I used this textbook as part of an intensive Spanish language program at my local junior college. Part of the reason I was excited by the program is that I have used the natural language method before, in the French in Action series, and found it excellent.
The Dos Mundos program is intended to be used in a classroom setting and I would not recommend it for home study. Unlike the French in Action series, it does not include extensive home video material that can take the place of an instructor. An instructor comfortable with the book and the natural language method is critical to success with this program.
I find that the natural language method, presenting all of the material in the new language and explaining in the language, prevents early language errors caused by translation and gives immediate satisfaction of being able to speak more than rote phrases. Dos Mundos is the only complete natural language program currently available for Spanish.

Best Classroom Text on the Market

I have been teaching University level introductory Spanish for over 10 years. This text is the best that I have ever used. The layout and coloring is great. There are excellent unit divisions. The latest edition has meaningfull cultural readings included within the chapters. Grammar explainations are clear and concise with good exercises. This is not a text for home study as the methodology incorporated is the Communicative Approach; briefy stated, study grammar and vocab at home and come to class and use it. Great classromm text for any Basic Language Program.

Prepare to beat your head against the wall

This book is terrible. Not only is the layout very confusing but the resources within it are definitely substandard. For a beginning Spanish text it's extremely hard to get into whatsoever. To understand half of the books "instructions" you'll need a seperate SpanishEnglish dictionary just to figure out whats going on. This book seems to be based on the assumption that you can guess everything from the confusing little pictures sprinled throughout the pages. The dictionary in the back is *not* up to the task and the sections on grammar are short, confusing, and nonintuitive. And whatever this "natural approach, which this text requires in the classroom is, it's terrible. Grammar is almost totally ignored to the detriment of the student. In addition, a CD-ROM is NOT provided with the book as standard, you must buy it seperately which pushes the price up considerably. The accompanying workbook and audio tapes are also non-intuitive and confusing. If you must use this book for a class then you'll need plenty of supplemental materials NOT connected to this book.
