Great for starting to design any type system..

I was taught from edition one of this book back in the early 70's. Once the second edition came out I jumped at it and was not disappointed. The third edition came out in 1989 and I got it at once. Now I hope Professor Stoecker is still working on a fourth edition so that I can also get it.

This is the best book I have ever seen to help someone understand the in's and out's of design; any design, from system concept to system completion. I can't say enough about this book.

The optimization subjects are as simple to understand as came be made with excellent explanations.

Subjects covered are economics, equation fitting, modeling systems, system simulations, lagrange multiplers, search methods, dynamic programming, geometric programming, modeling of thermal properties, steady state simulation, dynamic behavior of thermal systems, calculus methods of optimization, probabilistic approaches to design and more.

Included in the appendices are a list of comprehensive problems and a computer program for generalized system simulation.

You can't go wrong with this one.

Excellent Text On Applied Optimization Methods

Excellent introductory text on the various mathematical methods used to optimize thermal systems. Example problems with solutions in each chapter quickly reinforce the concepts discussed. Answers to most of the problems are a beneficial aid in helping the student arrive at the correct solution rather than stumbling down a blind alley.
There could be more depth in the discussion of thermal systems and design concepts but overall the tradeoff between optimization methods and design concepts is good.

Slightly Dated Yet Fundamental Reference Text for Thermal System Engineers

I'm an engineering professional who recently used this book for the study of the Design of Thermal Systems at Rochester Institute of Technology. It is written by William Stoecker, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and published in 1989.

The first two chapters are on engineering design and selecting workable designs. A 3rd chapter introduces engineering economics to forecast system costs in terms of future costs or translate future costs to present costs. The 4th chapter introduces equation fitting to model the behavior of subsystem components based on, say data from a catalog. This is followed by a chapter on system modeling, i.e drawing the functional flow diagram indicating mass transfer and work inputs/outputs from "black" box type unit components. Chapter 6 teaches how to simulate the model which helps in sensitivity studies before or after optimization. Mathematical optimization methods such as Lagrange Multipliers, Search Methods and Linear Programming among others are presented in chapters 8-12. For project work, possibly the best part of the book is contained in the Appendix. It lists thought provoking system design challenges that involve the full breadth and scope of the tools presented in the book.

The 3rd edition of this book can be used within the context of a senior undergraduate or first year graduate curriculum. The reason I write that is because Stoecker makes only passing attempts to elaborate elementary concepts in thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics. So be warned since right off the bat, the 2nd chapter presents problems in the analysis of systems for optimization, for example a piping system for water conveyance or the design requirement to heat a swimming pool given various constraints. If it has been a while since you took thermo or heat transfer, you're well advised to use supplemental texts to fill the knowledge gap.

The ideal student of this text is one who is well prepared to face these challenging problems and has some degree of experience with them in actual working life. The merit of the book is in its well thought out problems that have been developed from Stoecker's teaching as well as research into real world design problems.

There is little possibility that a solutions manual for the text can be obtained so it is advised that the student develop his solutions with his own research and thinking. Socratic discussions with the lecturer to get further insights can always help. Which brings me to the fact that the ideal lecturer is one who has also worked in engineering plants with a number of these systems in actual practice - compressors, pumps, turbines, piping systems, evaporators, condensors etc.

The fundamentals of the math behind the optimization and system simulation may not have changed. But I've rated 4 stars for this book only because its design methodologies can seem a little dated for our times especially. Stocker hasn't really edited the book to present new concepts on concurrent engineering, design for environment, design for manufacturability, quality function deployment, decision trees etc. The meat of the book is in its analysis and optimization as the title says but I still think that the new era engineer will be served better if contemporary upstream methodologies used to generate concepts, arrive at workable solutions etc can be presented in the book. Which is why Adrian Bejan's "Thermal Design and Optimization" is also another excellent text on this subject. Stay tuned for my review of that book!!

In this third edition of the text, the second half of the book has been substantially updated and expanded to include new or revised discussions of the following topics: mean square estimation, likelihood tests, maximum entropy methods, Monte Carlo techniques, spectral representations and estimation, sampling theory, bispectra and system identification, cyclostationary processes, deterministic signals in noise, and the Wiener and Kalman filters. Probability, Random Variables, and Stochastic Processes covers a remarkable density of material and the clarity of both presentation and notation make this book invaluable as a text and a reference.

S. Unnikrishna Pillai is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Polytechnic Institute of NYU in Brooklyn, New York. Found no substitute for a difficult subject

When readers and students ask to me for a useable book for nonmathematicians to get into probability (or a probabilistic approach to statistics), before embarking into deeper problems, I suggest this book by the Late A. Papoulis. I even recommend it to mathematicians as their training often tends to make them spend too much time on limit theorems and very little on the actual "plumbing".
The treatment has no measure theory, cuts to the chase, and can be used as a desk reference. If you want measure theory, go spend some time reading Billingsley. A deep understanding of measure theory is not necessary for scientific and engineering applications; it is not necessary for those who do not want to work on theorems and technical proofs.
I've notice a few complaints in the comments section by people who felt frustrated by the treatment: do not pay attention to them. Ignore them. It the subject itself that is difficult, not this book. The book, in fact, is admirable and comprehensive given the current state of the art.
I am using this book as a benchmark while writing my own, but more advanced, textbook (on errors in use of statistical models). Anything derived and presented in Papoulis, I can skip. And when students ask me what they need as pre-requisite to attend my class or read my book, my answer is: Papoulis if you are a scientist, Varadhan if you are more abstract.

Good book with the help of a good instructor

After reading almost all reviews, I actually think I agree with almost all including the ones that say it is not a book for beginners and ones that say that it is a great book written by a very knowledgeable author. As a student who just completed a course in this subject with this book as the text, here is what I would like to say:
1. My instructor re-ordered some of the content of the text for his course. It seemed necessary to understand certain concepts.
2. As one of the previous reviews mentioned, some of the important aspects of probability theory were hidden in problems, these were brought out by the instructor either as homeworks or as part of lecture notes and explained. This also means that it is not enough to just read this text and understand the examples. It is almost as important to go through the problems to get the complete picture
3. All in all I liked the book but I sure would not have liked it as much if I did not have a good instructor to go with it. Definitely not a self-study book.

Horrible is being too kind

I was forced to use this book for a course during my first year in Graduate School for Computer Engineering. I must say that this book is among the worst, if not the worst, I've encounterd. Concepts are never explained with any great degree of clarity: the authors' writing style is convoluted almost to the point of being indecipherable, new concepts are introduced with only minimal effort given to explaining their foundation and usefulness, and, conversely, concepts are proved using formulas/theorems that haven't yet been presented. If I hadn't previously taken a course using the excellent book "Probability and Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences" by Jay Devore, I wouldv'e been at a complete loss trying to understand the topics in this book.
If there is no way that you can avoid using this book, and if acquiring a well-written, logically-organized companion textbook like the one I mentioned above isn't feasible, then at a minimum I recommend buying "Schaum's Outline of Probability, Random Variables, and Random Processes" -- it at least clearly presents the concepts. By the way, the price of this book is completely unjustifiable -- it's blatant robbery.

Difficult, but good

Not always an easy reading style, but a facinating look at early American culture. Many original documents and letters are reproduced which give an authentic feel of the character of those times. Sometimes difficult to read, but the effort is rewarded by insightful analysis of unfamiliar facts, stories, and events.

This is a time in which American ideals are challenged by the reality of a modern, hostile world and internal struggle, so it seems like a good idea to examine our history. The best place I know to do so is Mr. Smith's excellent history of America. Massive yet very approachable, it brings to mind Simon Shaara's novels. Smith, one of our great historians, never succumbs to the academic's temptation to footnote and reference every fact. He writes beautifully, in a manner that brings history alive. By all means look for and treasure a copy of all 8 volumes of this ambitious project. It is sad that it is long out of print, as I know of no better history of our republic. If an editor reads this review, I emplore you to republish the entire set.
The first 2 volumes are a narrative history of the revolution, followed by books on the early republic, then the Civil War, the rise of industrial America, it's emergence into the world, and finishing with the Depression and the New Deal. Mr. Smith is a true scholar, so there are plenty of facts, but they are never dry or uninteresting, and they are presented as a story to be told, rather than a point to be made. Take a year off from other reading projects and take this 7 kilopage project on. You might consider reading Manchester's The Glory and the Dream to finish off with the history of America since 1932, and put it all in perspective. I strongly recommend you read this entire series and get a new appreciation for our country and a truly fine author.

This is my most used and very, very well-used cookbook. Having lived in Hong Kong and Taiwan I can vouch for the authenticity of the recipes. Instructions are thorough and easy to follow. This is one fantastic cookbook! I can't say enough good things about it! I could go on forever with superlatives. If you're going to have just one Chinese cookbook on your shelf, this is it!

An Excellent Reference

I initially purchased this book as required reading for a Police Sergeant promotional exam but, I realized that it was the most informative text on investigations that I have read to date. The text is very well written and most of the material is applicable in any jurisdiction. The book includes a good number of illustrations and photos and I'm positive that I'll be referring back to this book throughout my career as a police officer.
