This is the first time I have ever used Amazon to buy a book and at first I was kinda sceptical. You know buying the book online and it not being what you expect it to be, but, the book was in excelent condition and everything worked out great. The only thing though was the mailing part of this process, it took a little longer than expected but worked out okay anyway. Over all i will more than likely start buying more from amazon!

We need more flyfishing books like this!

Don Thomas writes as well about wildness and the sporting life as anyone alive today. Although he is probably better known for his bowhunting books, he writes just as well about bird hunting, and, in this case, flyfishing.
This is not just a list of fish taken and patterns used. It is a book about the flyfishing experience, of people and places and, of course, fish. Thomas has a naturalist's eye, and is fascinated by wild creatures and the places they inhabit.
There are too many flowery, sentimental flyfishing books on the market, written by Norman Maclean wannabes. This book is not one of them. Thomas is not a yuppie rhapsodizing about trout. He is a gifted writer who understands wildness and can convey what this wildness means to him.
It is one of the better flyfishing books out there. Anyone who loves the pursuit of fish would love this book.

Standard Handbook of Fastening and Joining

This is a very ambitious undertaking and, understandably, the Third Edition is a hefty volume. Despite its size, it simply cannot and does not cover the entire diverse realm of fastening and joining. Nevertheless, the subjects selected for coverage are concisely illustrated with dimensions and tabular data and relevant standards are cited. This is a very useful handbook. I am pleased to have it on my shelf. There are some shortcomings.
Most puzzling about this work is the criterion for inclusion or exclusion. Significant fastener categories of keen interest to a broad base of industry are missing, such as bearing mounting hardware, shaft collars, tapered adaptor bushings, pneumatic quick-action couplings, etc. On the other hand, other categories included, such as log (home) connections, can only appeal to a vary narrow specialized industrial base. Also, why is welding, a subject treated thoroughly in other dedicated works, allotted so much precious space here?
If this handbook is truly intended to cover "all" fastening and joining systems, then far more space is required (probably multiple volumes). Otherwise, a more rational selection process needs to be implemented.
I suggest prospective purchasers examine the table of contents, if not the full text, before buying, to be sure their areas of interest are adequately covered.

First step into the art of optical design

This book is a good introduction to the art of optical design. It is an excellent first read for any student who wants to learn practical optics, avoiding heavy math and focusing mainly on real-life examples following simple reasoning backed up with essential formulas and calculations, which illustrate how to derive a preliminary design, before starting any optimisation with some optical software. Nowadays anyone could do optical design using powerful package like OSLO, Zemax or Code V, it is so easy to ask the program to find a solution for you, but without understanding the basic principles, it is just an illusion that one can really design an optical system.

If one really wants to invest time into optical design, at least they should cover fundamentals, and this book gives this foundation in a concise and comprehensive form (200 pages book is not a formidable brick). In terms of practical use, it is similar to Donald C. O'Shea's book "Elements of Modern Optical Design", which also contains a lot of sample calculations, yet examples given in both books are very different. "Elements of Modern Optical Design" covers more about exact ray traces and third order aberrations (which can be done with the use of an optical software), whereas "Practical Optical System Layout" covers mainly paraxial calculations and focuses on optical elements and their combinations to reduce particular type of aberrations. A deeper treatment of aberration theory can be found in "Modern Optical Engineering" book by the same author, and in particular for lens design in his outstanding, but more advanced book "Modern Lens Design". Of course one may read introductions in Mellesgriot catalogue about different optical elements and their usage, but to get a systematic coverage of various concepts for optical design, this book is a good start.

A sort of back to the future II

The book title is quite interesting: PRACTICAL OPTICAL SYSTEM LAYOUT AND USE OF STOCK LENSES? Did we get what that announces? Unfortunately NO.

It seem than that book is not enough different or even not a complement to be read before, at the same time or after the first Warren J. Smith book ¡°Modern Optical Engineering¡±.
I was quite interested by the last chapter: Getting the Most: Out of ¡®Stock¡¯ Lenses. But I did not find a little number of graph advice or what ever extra stuff than present in the first Smith¡¯s book.
Without comparing page per page PRACTICAL OPTICAL SYSTEM LAYOUT is a sort of ¡°Modern Optical Engineering¡± without substance. I sincerely don¡¯t see what sorts of professional who have advantage to read that. Maybe some college Biology teacher? But I don¡¯t think so.
PRACTICAL OPTICAL SYSTEM LAYOUT seem to be half the way between a equation book like Schaum¡¯s and what ever you find at the beginning of any optic manufacturer catalogue (like Linos, Mellesgriot and Edmund who you get free by post or by the net).
Let¡¯s proof what I said with some example. First of all: if find a mistake at page 168 for the shape factor (k=c1/c1-c1) obviously without sense (but that proof nothing). Second like during all my science education in Smith¡¯s throw away lot of difficult concept without giving you some order what is the most important, what that concept mean! What is MTF, what is Coma, why we can¡¯t use first order optic to design what ever you want. Such simple question need a lot of word, lot of phrase, a lot of paragraph, a lot of example, a lot of graph and a lot of pages.
In conclusion, this ouvrage is for me a big deception. And author fail to teach you the ¡°first cut¡± of optical design.

Only one CD-not whole book

This was not the full audio book. It was only the intro . The item was one CD and only 50 minutes. Not exactly sure what happened but I do not feel that I received what was expected . I still want the whole book on audio, however I am afraid to purchase it again for fear the same thing will happen .

Think of this book as the "art of war" to use in marketing. Easy to read even if you are not very proficient in marketing and thinking strategies in marketing. Based on the current market situation, yours and your competitor's, it DOES matter which marketing strategy you use. One of the best books i have ever read. Ries/Trout fan.

The book looks at Marketing from a military perspective.
The book was largely influenced by the book "On War" by the retired Prussian general Karl von Clausewitz.
It basically outlines 4 broad Marketing Strategies which depend on your market position, the nature of your product and on the competition; viz, Offense, Defense, Flanking and guerrilla warfare.
"Marketing promises should be as vague as political ones. Otherwise you will erode the effectiveness of your forces", "Marketing battles are fought inside the mind. Inside your own mind and inside the mind of your prospects every day of the week.", "keep the forces concentrated in an overpowering mass. The fundamental idea.
