Another great book

This book can be considered complimentary to more physiologic books about the acid-base/electrolite balance books about renal system. Author describes all pathologies with related test procedures and values. Provides pointers for what to look and what not to mix with. Overall very good introductory book in the subject of renal pathology.

Brilliant

This book is far and away the clearest and most insightful book on kidney disease. The organization is exceptional, not so much the organization of chapters as the organization of thought that is clear throughout the book. Each disease is explained in a perfect context, making it clear how it's similar to but different from others (a great antidote to complains that renal diseases "all look the same and all get steroids anyway". Well, maybe only an antidote to the first claim...). It explains the tools available and ways to assess kidney disease at just the right level of depth--everything that a clinician would need to know, but not details better suited for pathology textbooks. It's about twice as long as it's successor (Renal Pathophysiology: The Essentials) but ten times as insightful.

The curious aspect of reading this book is that it's now 20 years old. In some ways, it's prophetic (such as the value of angiotensin blockade), but in other ways, even the pathophysiology discussion is outdated (no mention of E. coli O157:H7 in the section on hemolytic-uremic syndrome). The discussions of therapy are obsolete, but therapy isn't a major part of a book like this anyway. Even though the brilliance can't be beat, the book is outdated enough that it probably can't be used as a single source on kidney disease, so has to serve as a second book for an especially motivated student. An updated edition would get six stars.

This is a comprehensive and thorough guide in the land of acid base and electrolites. Great for the ones who wish to understand the renal functions. This book will take you all the way through Medicine rounds and exams.

Low on solved problems

Did not contain enough exhaustive solutions to really help those who need to get over the "math hump". The text runs together and subject areas are not clearly seperated. It's like an abridged textbook. I expected more math help and less theory help. If your looking for a suplement to QM classes as an undergrad the Dover books are better at doing the math. The Schaum editors left their forte behind with this one.
Update 11/03 - Half-way through second quarter in undergrad QM...still no help from this text. It attempts to be another textbook when it should double the solved problems both basic and complex. Problems should be solved from several angles and at various levels of approach.
Update 12/06 - Finished my first qm grad class...still no gold stars.

Outstanding

This is how I learn quantum. I use this book weekly, while my Shankar sits on the floor. If you are taking quantum at either the graduate or undergraduate level, do yourself a favor and buy this book. At least your homework will go easier.

Very useful, needs a rewrite ...

This book is useful. There is a variety of problems from fairly easy to difficult, but in general, the problems are similar (and often the same) as problems in graduate texts such as Merzbacher, Cohen, etc.. My complaint with this book is not necessarily the typos (although they should be fixed given the popularity of this book). My complaint is that that the authors sometimes skip steps in the solutions that are so critical, that is is nearly impossible to understand them. A useful solution can leave out mathematical drudgery, and calculations, but it shouldn't leave out critical steps that have been covered earlier in the book, because a solutions manual like this is not usually used as a textbook, it is used as a reference.

For instance I may want to try a practice problem on the Variational Method, and the problem leaves out steps that may have been covered in earlier chapters. So I spend hours playing with the problem until I find the solution. This is not useful, and not what a problems and solutions book should do. I understand that not every step can be included, but I would rather see more complete solutions, which might sacrifice the unsolved problems and the blank pages at the end of the book.

This book seems to have been typewritten from the authors' handwritten notes, because many of the typos are consistent with penmanship. But one of the authors should go over all of the solutions, flesh out the missing steps, and correct the errors. Without doing this, the physics student can't rely on this book as a trusted source, since they never know if the error they encounter is a typo or their own mistake.

Regardless, this is a useful book, and I have learned a lot from it.

Title is deceiving

Despite the equal treatment in the Intro, which misleads the reader that there will be air and solid waste chemistry, there is practically no in-depth discourse on these areas, as if they are not part of the subject. The basic Ideal Gas and Henry's Laws are covered handbook style, but in the chapters on Nitrogen and Sulfates, there is not a single mention of SOx and NOx, nor any discussion on composting and two pages on biodegradation. The title is misleading..should be Environmental Chemistry for Water Treatment. And the section on Total Alkalinity is designed to confuse the student. Many of you know what I mean. There is a ton of texts in this general area, and the best intermediate (and appropriately titled) one is by Spiro and Stagliani.

Very good book but read others Dr. Stanley has written

This is a good book and part of a series that Dr. Stanley has written.
Dr. Stanley has become a big name since the tremendous success of "The Millionaire Next Door" but all of his books on marketing and selling to the affluent are great.
I prefer the book "Marketing to the Affluent" if I only had one to read but if you are someone who deals with high income people, all books in the series are a must. He is ground breaking in his research and writes in an easy to read style.
I am a financial consultant and structured settlement consultant for injury victims who receive large settlements. I quote Dr. Stanley's research often and try to read everything he publishes.

A reality check for all salespeople targeting the affluent market

Dr. Stanley lays down a few key assumptions in this book and repeats them aggressively for one reason: He wants you to understand the fact that the strategies employed by successful salespeople in this market are largely ignored by the majority of their competitors.

One example (and there are many in the book): "Fifty top-ranked sales professionals spent an entire day together at a seminar. The seminar was held in a room within 100 feet of a doll auction. The auction was attended by hundreds of affluent prospects. Many dollars changed hands that day. Several attendees paid up to $40,000 for one doll. The auctioneers received between 10 and 35 percent of the sale price. Not one top-ranked sales professional who targets the affluent attended the auction."

Stanley is highly skilled in balancing stories of opportunities taken with stories of missed opportunities. Over the course of the book's 477 pages you begin shaking your head in disbelief, along with Dr. Stanley, as you realize that these opportunities are the "diamonds" described in Russell H. Conwell's 1921 masterpiece Acres of Diamonds (Dover Empower Your Life Series). The primary skill required to take advantage of these opportunities is opening your eyes. They are not hidden. They are in plain view, and time and time again "skilled" salespeople walk right past them as if they didn't exist.

Stanley shares some common ground with Dan Kennedy's book No B.S. Marketing to the Affluent: The No Holds Barred, Kick Butt, Take No Prisoners Guide to Getting Really Rich when stressing the importance of recognizing the affluent for their achievements. This is another critically overlooked area. The affluent want to know "inwardly," through recognition, that their achievements have made a difference. Many also have a deep need to project this "outwardly" with material symbols of achievement (homes, vehicles, clothing, expensive watches, etc).

At this point a reader might be tempted to say "Why should I care about how the affluent feel about themselves?" A valid question. The difference between caring and not caring is the difference between those who are positioned to sell to the affluent and those who are not. You have two choices: start caring, or pick a different demographic.

There is also an excellent chapter on courage, another key ingredient. While it may seem simple and academic, I'm sure that many will agree that one key reason why salespeople lack the ability to sell to the affluent (or the ability to generate profitable sales in any market) is that they lack the courage to walk up to the prospect and ask for the sale.

All of which brings us to one of the best parts of the book: the mind-numbing number of stories from Dr. Stanley in which affluent prospects share stories of NOT being approached, of NOT understanding why, of expressing their willingness to buy "if only" a salesperson had approached them.

Of course, that doesn't mean that a salesperson can pick up the phone and indiscriminately start dialing rich people. Timing is a key concern, and it's exhaustively covered in the book. There is a window of opportunity, a "season," and once you understand it, go to work. Many salespeople make the mistake of choosing a completely inappropriate time to approach affluent prospects. Buy the book and you'll gain this insight.

Selling to the affluent is a niche market, but as in all effective selling efforts, there are skills which you must master. First, you need to do your homework. You need to get inside of the heart & mind of your buyer. Second, you need to develop an understanding of WHY they buy, HOW they buy, and WHEN they buy. Third, you must have courage and confidence and an unshakable belief in yourself and what you are selling. Fourth, you must be a provider of solutions. Fourth, you must ASK. Get a copy of Jack Canfield's book The Aladdin Factor. It's one of his best books, in which he spends 277 pages convincing you that the single greatest reason why more people don't get what they want is that they simply will not ask for it.

"Selling to the Affluent," as well as Dr. Kennedy's Marketing to the Affluent, will only be a worthwhile investment for you if you have decided to take this market seriously, if you are committed to doing the work, and...as stated above...are willing to do the things that most salespeople are not willing to do in this market because they lack confidence, they lack motivation, they lack awareness.

You can buy the book and you can get the message, but until you make contact, it will just be another book on your shelf. Buy it and USE it.
