Inspiring

Finding good information on ways to unleash creativity in a spiritual context is easy. Finding a way to sell creativity to businesses is another thing. I particularly liked the way the book encourages you to customize your own training program. In my business I work with a very diverse group of people and businesses which demands that my program also be diverse. I highly recommend this sourcebook.

About the Author
Donald M. Pattillo (Acworth, Georgia) is an expert in both international business and the aerospace industry. Dr. Pattillo's first book, Pushing the Envelope (Univ. of Michigan Press, forthcoming), is a business history of the military/commercial aerospace industry.

A difficult subject put together in a logical flow

The author has taken a difficult subject(General Aviation) that has a history as long as powered flight itself and put it into a format that allows the reader to follow key historical events that shaped this segment of the aviation industry. He covers all the manufactures and the personalities who established these firms. However, the reader should already have a good grasp of the many General Aviation aircraft products that are refered to in the book chapters because there are few photos for reference. This is not a criticism and a reader who is not already familiar can obtain a reference book for this purpose. However,the main focus of the book is how the General Aviation business was formed and the historical economic business factors that drove and shaped this industry from the begining to today. I have heard many in aviation say this type book could not be written on this subject. This author has, and has done an excellent job.

Disappointing.

Very disappointing.

While I wouldn't challenge many of the cold facts presented in 'A History in the Making: 80 Turbulent Years in the American General Aviation Industry' (the numbers/dates, primarily), the book is so saturated in the personal politics of it's author that it is virtually unreadable.

I do not understand why so many writers today are (apparently) incapable of simply presenting hard information - or writing a fictional novel - without so doing. People slap down their hard-earned money, and this 'new school' of authors abuse their positions by proselytizing for their various causes/beliefs. That's fine if one is up front about one's intentions, but when it is done surreptitiously it is almost an aggressive act.

But, hey... To each their own. This is America. If you're a person that wants to inject your personal politics into your work, that's fine. If it's your desire to immediately alienate half your audience (or so), then that's certainly your right. It works with television... right?

I, for one, will not be wasting my money on any more thinly veiled political dissertations from this author.

I rather suspect that I'm not alone in that regard.

I am so happy that I bought this book. It is packed with information about the topic of small civil aircraft. Its all about the movers and shakers of the industry. The dates, people involved, places, companies, the ins and outs of the whole history. I'm amazed the author was able to get it all into one book so well. If you like aviation as I do you"ll love this book. It takes time to read in order to take all the information in. But its a great read. Thanks so much. Sincerely, Rick L.

About the Author
John J. Shaughnessy is a Professor of Psychology at Hope College, a relatively small, select, undergraduate liberal arts college in Holland, Michigan. After completing the B.S. degree at Loyola University of Chicago in 1969, he received his Ph.D. in 1972 from Northwestern University. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Society whose recent research has focused on practical aspects of memory. He is coauthor, with Benton J. Underwood, of Experimentation in Psychology (Wiley, 1975). He was selected by students in 1992 as the Hope Outstanding Professor Educator; he serves as a mentor in the College's Faculty Development Program for younger faculty; and he has recently been chairperson of the Hope College Psychology Department.

Eugene B. Zechmeister is a Professor of Psychology at Loyola University of Chicago, a large metropolitan university where he has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses since Professor Zechmeister completed his B.A. in 1966 at the University of New Mexico. He later received both his M.S. (1968) and Ph.D. (1970) from Northwestern University. A specialist in the field of human cognition, Professor Zechmeister authored, with S.E. Nyberg, Human Memory: An Introduction to Research and Theory (Brooks/Cole, 1982), and with J.E. Johnson, Critical Thinking: A functional Approach (Brooks/Cole, 1992). He is a Fellow of both the American Psychological Association (Divisions 1,2, and 3) and the American Psychological Society. In 1994, he was awarded the Loyola University Sujack Award for Teaching Excellence in the College of Arts and Sciences. Professor Zechmeister currently is the Undergraduate Program Director for the Loyola University of Chicago Psychology Department.

One of the great philosophy books

I studied under Michael Scriven at UC Berkeley and was fortunate for it. He is and a maverick. During the 1960's in a class on Marxism he argued against the revolution: what if it went bad? Very unpopular with the Berkeley radicals.
He is brilliant and one of the smartest people I have met, including Buckminster Fuller and Gregory Bateson.

He grew up in the Australian outback and got a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Oxford.

Perfect for Beginners & Non-techies

This book was definitely written for non-technical people. In order to enjoy this book, one does not have to have great knowledge in electronics and mathematics. As matter of fact, the author completely avoids using mathematical equations and replace it with very easy-to-follow graphs to explain the complex "Radiophysics". The author did a very good job of explaining difficult topics of "Radiophysics" using normal everyday language. An excellent starter book for anyone who is interested in learning how our modern communication works. I wish I had read this book before I started my college engineering courses. Concepts mentioned in this book can be a stepping stone for anyone(high school students, people in technical sales, non-technical managers, and even tax agents) who is considering a career in RF/wireless communication field. This book will definitely set you in the right path for an introductory communication class.

Awesome intro to theory behind RF!!

I'm just beginning to get into Amateur Radio (ie: Ham radio) to move my career more toward RF technology. This book really lays out the info very gently, doesn't try to impress you with huge words or complex theorems. For anyone trying to gain insight into RF, this is a GREAT starting point. But, if you're trying to get into Ham radio, get the test book first from the ARRL and pass the Technician's exam. After that, you can apply practically all the theory found in this book and expand your knowledge further through experience.

A perfect niche book

I've been dusting off a lapsed lifelong professional interest in RF, network technologies and related areas recently, and as part of that research I stumbled across this excellent book. If you've dug around the field at all you probably have realized that there are two large categories of books on RF and communications. The first is the very superficial, utterly non-technical book that will let you pick the topic out of a line up but not really understand it. The second large category is the college textbook written for electrical engineers, which is full of Grrek letter -laden formulae and is incredibly technical. Both serve their purposes to be sure, but are not universally relevant or accessible.

Sinclair's book starts off at a very, very basic level and uses plain, conversational language to explain RF theory from the ground up. It really is a fantastic resource that I keep going back to for fundamental points in a readily comprehensible format. I recommend this book professionally to a lot of people who lack a decent grasp of the basics, and without exception they are up to speed in very short order once this book arrives.

Well written, organized and very sound. Can't recommend this book highly enough.

The best book I've found yet!

I'm a systems analyst, and wanted to get into building *things* instead of just code. So, I bought a few electronics books and set out to learn. I quickly found out that many books expect a lot of background knowledge, or just briefly touch on something and then use the concept extensively later on. This all made learning quite frustrating.
That was until I found this book... This book is leaps and bounds above the others... The author explains things very clearly, and really starts from the begining. The writing style is very easy to read, and the projects in the book are actually useful. I've since bought this author's audio projects book, which is also very good.
Another thing that really impressed me about this book is that the author answers his email. I had a question about a modification I wanted to make to one of his designs, and he gave me a very detailed answer, and even sent me part numbers that would be appropriate for the task.
If you're setting out to learn electronics - this is definitely the book you want :)

An excellent introduction to practical electronics

For most people, this a probably the best book available to self-teach yourself electronics. It briefly introduces the theoretical concepts, but it is mostly focused on the practical side of things. The first two chapters deal with the basics-- setting up a workstation, selecting tools, briefly introducing each component (later chapters go into much more detail), and finally about 35 pages or so on the underlying theories & laws. From there on, each chapter introduces a specific component type, covers more of the theory relevant to those components, and in most cases the chapter ends with one or more projects that use the component. The projects range from short (one or two pages) circuits, to fairly involved projects spread over multiple chapters. Unlike some eletcronic books, most of these projects will be generally useful. In most cases, you are building tools that you will probably continue to use as you skills develop (The first project, for example, is a dual variable power supply that any electronics hobbyist will find quite useful.)

There are a few minor problems with the book, though none of them warrant deducting a star. The biggest thing that I've noticed so far is the lack of photographs. There are a few photos in chapter one and two showing each tool and examples of the components, but there are no photos at all showing any of the projects. The projects are illustrated with line drawings & schematics, but in some cases the instructions would be clearer with the addition of photos. The section on soldering has the same problem. The text is quite clear, but the addition of a photo or two would be beneficial.

Another reviewer complains about schematic symbols being used without being introduced. He's correct, Slone doesn't actually define any of the schematic symbols, nor does he include a section on reading schematics. That's clearly a pretty big oversight, and it should be fixed in a later edition. That said, all of the schematics are quite clearly labeled. While it may not be immediately obvious to someone with no electronic knowledge what T1 refers to on a schematic, it shouldn't be to hard to figure out that, considering you are reading a chapter on transformers, it probably means "the first transformer". Anytime that it's not obvious the component is labeled specifically.

The same reviewer also complains that the book is focused to heavily on projects, not enough on theory. Most people will probably think that's a good thing, but rest assured that you will learn enough theory here to get you started. Writing a book like this is a fine balancing act between introducing enough theory to make the concepts clear, but not so much as to turn off the casual hobbyist. This book does an outstanding job of walking that tightrope. If you still feel you need more theory after reading this book, you there are dozens of other books that you can graduate to from here, and this book will get the groundwork in place so you will be able to understand those books.

This book got me through college!

I want to say that this is the best electronics teach yourself book for beginners I have ever read (if this changes I will edit this review to reflect it). While I have advanced to more sophisticated books my footing is firmly planted in the theories and applications this book taught me.

After two years of electrical engineering schooling at the University of North Dakota I was doing well but always felt I didn't quite have a grasp on a lot of the basics (especially transistors, capacitors, and inductors). In engineering all we hear is theory and math and never is there anything really explained at a practical level (Such as for use in DIY projects). So I got this book without really knowing all that much about practical electronics principles. This book (along with Mr. Slone's other book (The Audiophile's Project Sourcebook)) got me through all of my labs and assigments in electronics (three semesters worth).

This book does not describe the nitty gritty theory of everything, but that isn't its purpose. The purpose of this book is to give the reader a working knowledge of electronics principles, and it does that VERY well. I wish I would have had this book many years ago...

As a compliment to this book I also read "Practical Electronics for Inventors" by Paul Scherz. In fact, I would be say that if you studied this book well and combined it with the previous two books (which will provide even more real world experience) you will come out of it with a better general knowledge of electronics than almost any electrical engineer out of college.

If you are reading this and ARE an electrical engineer or EE student you should seriously consider this book and the others to enhance your current breadth of knowledge if you feel you aren't quite connecting it all, as I wasn't at one point. If you are neither of these but rather somebody who is interested in learning about the field of electronics with the thought of creating your own circuits someday, this book will be invaluable to you.

Overall this book is excellent and very easy to read and I highly recommend it to beginners and experienced people who might need a refresher course. This book is very simple, and one should not expect to become an expert in the subject with just this. As for weaknesses, I cannot think of any, since this book is exactly what I needed to tie everything together in my mind. So for the inherent value of a "non-textbook" approach to electronics along with its easy to understand flow and do it yourself projects, I give this book a perfect 5 stars.

Save Your Money!

Don't waste your money on this book. The primary problem being that the authors have gone completely "over the top" in their efforts to introduce logic representations employing what they refer to as "the mixed-logic convention". This has resulted in a key chapter (4) on the design and implementation of combinational logic being completely incomprehensible. And unfortunately much of this confusion is carried throughout the remainder of this book.
In fairness, I will point out that I'm somewhat biased. Being from an older school of though where we were taught binary arithmetic, Boolean algebra, Karnaugh mapping, digital IC hardware types, combinational and synchronous circuit design/analysis and how to establish and maintain a logic/voltage convention in our circuits. We were also taught how to take the family of logic that the boss gave us(usually the NAND gate, NOT inverter and J-K F/F) and design, test and draw a schematic for a circuit. We saw no need to have two or three different drawings for the NAND gate; somehow we just seemed to know how to interrupt the NAND function and no one seemed to agonize over what if the signal is "active high", "active low", "asserted", "unasserted" and etc. We also knew what the schematic meant without any "half arrows", "back slashes" or active high/low indicators other than the bar. God did we have it nice.
I fully understand that an instructor in this field today must incorporate some aspects of this mixed logic convention into their presentations. Many circuit designers have been taught this, to some degree or other, for several years and new students are sure to see different gate representations with different logic conventions being used in the same schematics; however this book is going to do nothing but be confussing in this area. When presenting the simple NAND gate implemented latch circuit (basic F/F), you see a drawing with two gates, eight half arrows, two back slashes and active logic livel indicators on all four I/O's, you have got to know something is seriously wrong. Do not read this book until you have your degree and then only for a laugh. For a Schaum's Outline, check out DIGITAL PRINCIPLES by Tokheim. If you can afford a good hardback reference, chech out DIGITAL SYSTEMS, PRINCIPLES & APPLICATIONS by Tocci & Widmer.

A "MUST BUY" Book

Excellent book for beginners and a great reference for every one! This books covers every thing you need for designing Digital Systems and covers all course fundamentals (Binary System, Logic Design...... upto Design of Simple State Machines and Electronically Programmable Functions) and supplements any class text. An essential book for all levels from High School to College. Schaum's Outline Series are a great help.
