I took the class with the author and I really did not find the book particularly useful. I wouldn't say the book was very well written but it had all that you need to know.

BUY THIS INSTEAD OF THE 5th EDITION

Very very few changes. My friend got the new edition and I bought this one for our psychology class and I compared them. The page numbers may be different but the content is the quite similar. There is one study from 2010 that was added that is not present in this edition, but other than that, it is the same. Save your money and buy this one.

Easy to Understand

I found this textbook while perusing online and ordered it on a whim. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to understand and how well it is presented. Now that I'm teaching psych myself, this is a textbook I will definitely assign.

About the Author
John Ormsbee Simonds is recognized worldwide as a leading spirit and thinker in the fields of landscape architecture and environmental planning. His degrees from Michigan State University and the Harvard Graduate School of Design have been followed by years of travel, research, and observation which have provided him with firsthand knowledge and understanding of the most advanced land planning approaches and technology.

In a long and distinguished career he has served for 15 years on the architectural faculty of Carnegie-Mellon University, lectured widely in the United States and abroad, written several best-selling books and numerous articles. His firm, Environmental Planning and Design (EPD) of Pittsburgh, of which he is now partner emeritus, has served as planner of record for more than eighty planned communities and four new towns. Among the many awards won by the firm are those for the Chicago Botanic Garden, Pelican Bay in Florida, and a state environment action plan for the Virginia General Assembly.

Mr. Simonds is a past President and Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, which awarded him its highest honor, the ASLA medal. He was a member of the President’s Task Force on the Environment and the Florida Governor’s Task Force on Natural Resources, and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Design, Great Britain.

Wise and wonderful!

I was surprised to see the two prior comments and suspect that they were not written by anyone in the landscape architecture field. This book has been the classic introductory text since the 1960s. As a text, it does not purport to be a definitive reference but rather to acquaint the student and layperson with the breadth of landscape architecture. It is not at all focused on the surface alone--Simonds has been one of the pioneers of sustainable ecological design, and the book proves it, covering, among other topics, natural water systems, native plants, greenways, and climate. As Simonds states, "The work of the landscape architect...is to help bring people...into harmonious relationship with the living earth--with the 'want to be' of the land." This book points us in the right direction!

Yikes!! Simplistic & dated for 1999

Based on the previous reviews I expected a rigorous, comprehensive, organized & contemporary approach to the topic but was soon disappointed with almost every aspect of the book, It's photo's, text, timeliness, scope, scholarship and even general layout are substandard for 1999.
The book discusses landscape in primarily visual terms i.e. the landscape is seen as something to be artistically composed according to principles espoused by the Master's of design, i.e. Corb, Wright, etc. as if that is enough. Wrong! For instance, a golf course is a monoculture with environmental benefits equivalent to a parking lot, yet the author cites numerous examples of the genre as something to aspire to.
Throughout the book, broad statements are made and not explained or justified, i.e. New York City is considered a bad landscape, a sort of icon of man's inhumanity to man, but on the next page Central Park is heralded for it's design and benefits, yet the author doesn't bother to explain either assertion, socially, environmentally, even visually, as if the statements and pictures are self evident.
In short, if you know nothing about ANY kind of design, perhaps this book is of some help, but if, like me you've studied architecture and are looking to add to your understanding of landscape architecture this book has VERY little to offer.

excellent resource for students and landscape architects.

This book is an EXCELLENT research and design tool, especially for landscape architecture students. The color photographs are incredible and numerous. Also there are HUNDREDS of simple to understand, wonderful illustrations. I find so much of the material helpful not only in guiding my design thought processes but also for use in presentations as well. Although I have many landscape architecture books, I find this is the one I go back to over and over again. I cannot emphasize enough how valuable it is too me and worth every cent it cost me. I truly believe that it should be a must for every future landscape architect.

WILLIAM STRONG directs the Utah Writing Project at Utah State University, where he teaches courses in writing, English education, and content-area literacy. A Teacher's best friend

The third edition of Sentence Combining just arrived. I can't wait to get to class Monday to start my students on these exercises! William Strong wrote another book about writing development, Coaching Writing, that I purchased at a writing workshop. The discussion of sentence combining as a development technique excited my teaching, but I don't have time (or energy) to prepare sentences for use with the technique. Sentence Combining fills that slot perfectly. This activity greatly improved my student's ability to revise their writing. They were able to see that revision is a process. For some it was a true "ah ha!" moment! The techique I found in the first section of Coaching Writing is the focus of Sentence Combining A Composing Book. I can't praise these two books enough. Every English teacher at my high school has heard me praise William Strong's work, and several have adopted his strategies. You can't go wrong with this purchase.

An excellent resource for sentence composing and editing

This book is a classic now, and it should be. Research in writing instruction has demonstrated that students who work on sentence combining do improve as writers. The book presents the student with short kernel sentences to combine into longer, more complex structures. In combining, students stretch into learning to control sentences for length, pace, and complexity. When they edit their sentences, they practice the revision skills good writers all use. I have used this book successfully with remedial and entry level college students; it would also be appropriate for high school students and advanced intermediate students. It is not a technical grammar text, and can be useful without a sophisticated knowledge of grammar. The selections are engaging and are effectively presented in order of difficulty. This would be a useful text for home schoolers at the high school level.
