A good self-study course, if you're interested

I am the reader from Montezuma, NM, and after taking a few more chemistry courses and re-reading the outline, I feel that I should add a few observations to my enthusiastic review from above, which I wrote over 3 years ago.
I own many, many Schaum's Outlines, and am satisfied with all of them. However, before you buy this outline of college chemistry or any of the other Schaum's Outlines, you need to ask yourself what your needs are. If you are looking for a brief review of a subject, you should look elsewhere. If you are taking a course in general chemistry and need a little help with some areas of it, you should look elsewhere--preferably, ask someone with a thorough grasp of the subject to explain those areas to you.
The Schaum's Outlines are best used as a self-study tool. Let's face it, reviewing an entire subject and solving all the problems to gain a solid grasp on the material is difficult and time-consuming, and I suspect few students already enrolled in a course will have the extra time to rehash what they've already been told by reading through a Schaum's Outline, and even fewer will want to go through so many problems--at least in my courses, the problems we are provided are too much to begin with.
For review purposes, Schaum's may help some students, especially if you are reviewing years of material such as I did for my IB exam. However, since you need to know what your course will test you on specifically, you would need to go through the outline along with your notes. Therefore, spending more time reviewing your course notes might be a better use of your time.
Schaum's Outlines are essentially cheaply made textbooks, and, as with other texts, the writing varies widely from one book in the series to another. If a cheap self-study course is what you seek, or you'd like to preview a course you plan to take, by all means go with Schaum's. If you are a student looking for help with a subject, seek it elsewhere.
For help with grades, I suggest you try the Scham's "How to Study" guide and follow their suggestions.

An Excellent Study Aid

This book is concise and complete. The reviews are great, and the problems aren't just busywork--they actually will help you understand the material. For the higher level International Baccalaureate chemistry exam, I have had to review 2 years worth of general chemistry, and this book has helped me immensely.

Excellent self-contained inexpensive chemistry textbook

This has got to be just about one of the best Schaum's outlines available, and that is saying a lot, since there are many good ones. I picked up a copy for self study due to a domino effect - I was attempting to learn molecular biology, which caused me to review my college biology, which in turn meant remembering my college chemistry.

I bought this book and read and worked through the exercises from chapter one on quantities and units through chapter 17, acids and bases. At no time did I need to seek out another textbook to solve the problems. Everything you need as far as "lecture" is in the outline. All included tables, figures, definitions, explanations, and example problems are complete and excellent. None of the mathematics involved in chemistry calculations is difficult, but the rules can get involved and you need a good book like this one to explain all of the variations involved in solving problems.

Chapters 1 through 14 cover what you would normally learn in a two semester sequence of college chemistry. From that point on in the outline there are a series of miscellaneous topics. Of course, the one I appreciated the most was chapter 15 on organic chemistry and biochemistry, because it directly relates to what I needed to know so I could read the references to chemistry in the biology books without scratching my head. There are also additional chapters on thermodynamics and chemistry, acids and bases, metal ions, electricity and chemistry, and the chemistry of nuclear processes.

Whether you are a college chemistry student, or someone like me who needs to review the topic, I strongly advise you to pick up a copy of this inexpensive yet extremely clear and complete Schaum's outline. It also serves as a great reference after you finish your studies.

Fabulous (but demanding!) classic with entertaining asides

This book is a famous classic. The commentaries on historically important problems and the mathematicians who solved them are fascinating and entertaining and fun reading even for non-mathematicians. For example, someone studying the history of science would gain much from reading through them and could use the book as a shelf reference. The mathematical presentation is demanding, but if you get through it you'll definitely have achieved something. WARNING: A professor tells me that the problems in this book include many that would stump most professors! This book is not suitable as a universal textbook. But there are also many problems that ordinary students will be able to do.

An absolute gem of textbook!

I've taught upper division students from this book (and the first edition) 5-6 times for over a decade. I remain impressed by the broad range of topics from which the teacher and reader can select. As with his excellent calculus textbook, the author tries to show students how mathematics is a human activity, a subject that developed in response to actual needs and which is still lively and developing. No part of mathematics illustrates this development better than the topic of differential equations, which was invented to solve pressing problems in astronomy. One example: In Newton's time, accurate location of position on the open seas was an unsolved problem, crucial to commerce. New techniques from differential equations led to the ready calculation of tables which, together with the invention of Harrison's sea-going chronometer, effectively solved the navigation problem. Differential equations lie at the core of the physical sciences and engineering and are proving increasingly valuable in biology and medicine. Simmons' book will not appeal to readers who want merely recipes with examples of their use. Such readers might prefer the excellent books from the Schaum's Outline Series. Those readers who want to see vital mathematics well presented, those readers who think that mathematics stops at trigonomerty or the calculus, those readers who want to use differential equations intelligently, and those readers who just like a cracking good mathematics story should get a copy of Simmons' book and read.

Teambuilding Basics

Excellent book for the novice facilitator as well as the pro! This comprehensive guide takes you through every phase of team development from start to finish. It presents the data in an easy to follow, step-by-step facilitator style. It includes reproducable handouts and slides. An excellent resource for establishing teams! I recommend all of the training guides in the series of ASTD Sourcebooks. I've used them all!

Indispensible Starting Point for New Projects

The Fourth Edition is an advancement over the 2nd edition, the one I "grew up" with. Instead of jumping to cost preparation and option selection, then on to preliminary design, it starts out an excellent introduction, basic requirements for OSHA and EPA (including a good section on HAZOPs), a review of computer-aided design, then on to cost preparation and the rest. After option selection, the authors provide a good solid section on process optimization. This is a new area in the text and well worth reading. All in all, a current, concise design book, ideal for the student or the old hand.

Good Starting Point for Economic Investigations

I never had much use for this text while in school. As with most subjects Senior year, we went too fast to appreciate it. With the years, however, I had cause to appreciate Peters & Timmerhaus. It is packed full of rules-of-thumb for preparations of cost estimates and comparing options. Although it is not the best place to end an economic investigation, it is the best place to start one.

Good for engineers starting the career

The book is a mix of economical and technical aspects of chemical engineering design; so is good for graduates starting the career or for practicing engineer interested in economical aspects of plant design. For me the good companion book for these engineer is "Conceptual design of chemical processes" by J. Douglas or better but out-of-print "Applied Project Engineering and Management" by E. Ludwig.

This edition follows seven prepared by W. Creighton Schwan, who ably continued Richter’s original work. Changes in the electrical trade prompted a decision to produce a fundamentally rewritten and reorganized work that more adequately reflects the challenges of a new century. We are rapidly approaching the point at which the majority of electric energy consumed in the U.S. is processed electronically, and therefore involves substantial harmonic components. Today’s apprentice needs some understanding of how these loads affect wiring decisions, or risks being left behind.

Nevertheless, I have tried to keep the presentation accessible to all, for a personal reason. In 1957, at the age of ten, I helped my father extend a branch circuit in our home. My father, although handy, was never in the trade. Yet he correctly understood my intuitive fascination with what we were doing, and the next day I came home from school to a brand new copy of the fifth edition, just out, of Practical Electrical Wiring. I was riveted, and read the entire book cover to cover. It seemed as if I had been given the key to the inside door to a training room of a wonderful profession.

I didn’t actually enter the trade until many years later, but I never got the book out of my mind. After college, I returned to my true calling, and I returned to this book as well, which was always an invaluable reference. It is now my great honor to carry on a wonderful tradition.

PRACTICAL ELECTRICAL WIRING - 18th Ed.

This new (18th) edition of Practical Electrical Wiring is an excellent guide to basic (and also not-so-basic)residential, farm and commercial electrical wiring. It has been completely updated from the 17th edition, and reflects the latest changes in the 2002 National Electrical Code.
The text covers an astonishing range of subjects, from the basics of volts and amperes to some very solid material on grounding, wiring methods, residential service, and conductor sizing.
This book is quite different from the typical Sunset do-it-yourself guides that one picks up at Home Depot. It will not tell you how to rewire Aunt Sophie's favorite lamp. It will tell you about residential branch circuits, overcurrent devices (fuses and circuit breakers), outlet and switch boxes, residential and nonresidential lighting, special appliance circuits, safety, wiring methods, electric motors, and a great deal more.
It has an excellent section on how to modernize old work, including how to run wiring through ceilings, walls, and from floor-to-floor. And in case you've forgotten how, it also has a clear illustration of how to tie an Underwriter's Knot (see page 355)!
This really is an excellent book, obviously written by a person who has many years of practical experience and knows what he is talking about. It would serve well as a vocational school text and as a fine general reference book for the homeowner and for journeyman electrician.
To round it out, it is well illustrated, has useful NEC ampacity and load tables in the appendices, and has a very comprehensive index.

The only book you need to wire your house

We bought this hoping to get ideas for wiring our new house. With only this book we were able to wire our entire new house - from setting the power at the street - to wiring our well . Not only were we able to wire our entire house - it passed inspection on the first try with no corrections . A very valuable book for home owners and builders.

About the Author
George Ritzer is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland where he has also been a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and won a Teaching Excellence Award. He was awarded the 2000 Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award by the American Sociological Association. He has served as Chair of two Sections of the American Sociological Association- Organizations and Occupations and Theoretical Sociology. In addition to The McDonaldization of Society (1993, 1996, 2000; translated into a dozen languages), his other efforts to apply social theory to the everyday realms of the economy and consumption include Expressing America: A Critique of the Global Credit Card Society (1995), The McDonaldization Thesis: Explorations and Extensions (1998), and Enchanting a Disenchanted World: Revolutionizing the Means of Consumption (1999). At the other end of the spectrum, his contributions to metatheorizing include Sociology: A Multiple Paradigm Science (1975), Toward an Integrated Sociological Paradigm (1981), and Metatheorizing in Sociology (1991). He has recently edited The Blackwell Companion to Major Social Theorists (2000), as well as The Handbook of Social Theory (with Barry Smart), and is co-founding editor (with Don Slater) of the Journal of Consumer Culture. In 2001 Sage of England published two volumes of his collected works- Explorations in Social Theory: From Metatheorizing to Rationalization and Explorations in the Sociology of Consumption: Fast Food Restaurants, Credit Cards and Casinos. Among his forthcoming works are the Handbook of International Social Problems and the two-volume Encyclopedia of Social Theory. His next original book, The Globalization of Nothing: So Many Making So Much of So Little will be published in 2003. In 2002 McGraw-Hill published Ritzer's Contemporary Sociological Theory and Its Classical Roots: The Basics. Douglas J. Goodman is an Assistant Professor at the University of Puget Sound in the Department of Comparative Sociology. He was given a Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Wellesley College and an Excellence in Teaching award at the University of Maryland. His publications can be divided into three areas. First are those related to communicating theory to students. These include, "Postmodern Theory," (with G. Ritzer) Handbook of Sociological Theory (2002); "Habermas's Social Theory," (with R. Brown) Handbook of Social Theory (2000); "A Sociological Approach to Social Problems," (with C. Calhoun & G. Ritzer) Primus Social Problem (2000); "The Study of Social Problems," (with G. Ritzer) Primus Social Problems. (2000); and "Jacques Lacan: The Imaginary, the Symbolic, the Real," in Postmodern Social Theory (1997). Second, are those works on theory addressed more to other theorists and general intellectuals. These include "Dream Kitsch and the Debris of History: An Interview with Martin Jay," Journal of Consumer Culture (forthcoming); "Defending the Liberal Arts from the Law," Law and the Liberal Arts (forthcoming); "What Collins' The Sociology of Philosophies Says About Sociological Theory," Sociological Theory (2001); and his dissertation, A Sociology of Freedom. Finally there are the publications relating to consumer culture. These include, Consumer Culture (forthcoming); "Consumption as a Social Problem," International Handbook of Social Problems (forthcoming); and "Theories of Consumption," (with G. Ritzer & W. Wiedenhoft) Handbook of Social Theory (2000).

Excellent Reference Book for SERIOUS Sociology Students and Scholars

Very few people can pack so many complex theories and explain their nuances so well in such a simple, clear manner. This is not to say that the book is a 'simple read,' because the theories and the tensions are extremely complex and muddled. But anyone who has read the original readings--pick Foucault, Baudrillard, Garfinkel, or whoever you like--would appreciate how CLEAR Ritzer and Goodman are. This book provides a gateway and an invitation to complex theoretical thoughts. It is also an authoritative and reliable reference text.

the easiest theory book ever. but sometimes the detail has been omitted which I'm not fine with.. for non-sociology majors, but want to use it for other purposes (for papers for history classes and what not) it's okay
