Excellent and insightful.

This is a fascinating book analyzing how we are all far less Cartesian than we think. In other words, a slew of predictable human bias flaws what we feel is our own objective judgment. The author eminently demonstrates this point by forcing the reader to take a 39 questions test at the beginning of the book. This test is stuffed with all the traps that illustrate the human judgment flaws that he analyzes thoroughly in following specific chapters.
You can view the test as a very entertaining IQ test from hell. The questions seem often simple. But, they are not. Other times, they are obviously difficult. I got a bit more than half of them correct. This was mainly because I had some knowledge or experience regarding certain traps the questions presented. I had made the mistake before. So, I learned from that. When I did not have any prior knowledge of a question, my results were very human, meaning not that good. But, learning the correct answer was both fun and educating.
The author touches on several fascinating probability and statistic concepts. One of them being the Bayes theorem, which suggests that medical screen test can be highly unreliable despite being touted as 80% to 90% accurate. In other words, you better understand the Bayes theorem better than the medical specialists who screen you for various diseases. Because, based on the author's study, doctors don't have a clue. Another chapter had an excellent discussion on correlation vs. causation. This includes some tricky nuances that many analysts in the financial industry trip upon. Another interesting probability concept is why it takes only 23 people in a room to have greater than a 50% that two of them share the same birthday. This seems impossible, but it is true.
The book has obviously a lot more than I am letting on here. I am not going to ruin it for you. It is really fun, educating, and interesting to read. You will also learn a whole lot about how you think, how others think, and how people think in groups. You will also understand how tricky it is to ask truly open and objective questions. Also, polls that seem objective are not due to the subjective structure of the question. I think you will enjoy this book, and I strongly recommend it.

Introductory and readable summary on this topic

This is my first book on psychology for self-study. As the author puts in the preface, "the focus is on experimental findings rather than psychological theory, surprising conclusions rather than intuitions, and descriptive prose rather than mathematics."
The author tends to use nuclear weapon, war, and clinical examples more often than other topics in order to illustrate concepts. The examples are taken from actual empirical researches, including laboratory ones. Due to the purpose of the textbook, the examples are used to explain concepts, rather than to show how an experiment is designed or how "good" the experiment is in the sense of cause and effect. The bibliography list is correspondingly large given only some 260 pages. The author does not forget to provide tips on how to avoid particular biases presented in a given chapter. No exercises are provided at the end of each chapter, but a special section READER SURVEY given after preface asks you to answer 39 questions to be used in the main part of the text. No glossary is provided.
As I read through, I have warned myself not to generalize research results presented to be directly applicable to my life without careful thoughts. From my naïve point of view and based only on materials presented in the book, these research findings may be internally valid, but never guaranteed to work in any other circumstances or contexts. Such context dependence is treated explicitly in Chapter 4, but it all applies to any other concepts discussed throughout the book. The author warns this point to readers at the end of the book in Appendix. My suggestion for the next revision would be to include informal yet usable introduction on how to design an experiment that anyone could conduct without specialized devices or environment, so that readers can test biases that may be present in their own contexts.
As an example, having been an Amazon customer for a while, I see more votes on "yes" for reviews 4 and 5 stars than those on "no" for reviews 3 and below. A lot of materials in this Great Book

This is a very dense book, relatively easy to read, and very2 helpful. I love Blink and The Tipping Point, but this book probably has much much more materials, arguably more than 5 times of inside that those two best sellers combined.

I am very interested in the popular psycology stuffs, and Influence by Cialdini is my fav. So this book in some way give you the same chockful of surprises and new insight that will change the way you think.

I came across recomended by a University of Chicago MBA -email friend- who has much similar books favourites and he recomended this highly, and i absolutely agree and i would be glad to recommend this to anyone interested in human behaviour and psychology of bias.

MBA students should read this one and surely will enjoy this. I always draw, marks and put notes on my book and i think i end up marking so much of the materials.

Clear presentation of the mathematics behind computer graphics

This old book is a very good programming language-independent guide to the mathematics necessary for the implementation of computer graphics. I still consult my copy regularly even now, 14 years after I first purchased it. Chapter one, on computer graphics basics in general, talks about very old hardware technology, and can largely be skipped. Who really needs to know about dot matrix printers and electrostatic plotters these days? Chapter 2 begins the meat of the book, where the 2D matrix transformations of scaling, translation, rotation, and reflection are introduced. Next the author shows how to combine these matrices to perform these operations in series. These ideas are extended to 3D in chapter 3. The latter part of chapter 3 might be of particular interest to students of computer vision, since it does an exceptional job of explaining the mathematics of perspective, vanishing points, projection, and reconstruction of 3D images that so many computer vision books tend to gloss over. Chapters 4 through 6 is where the book is truly excellent, in that it gives the clearest presentation of parametric curves, B-splines, and Bezier curves I have ever seen, and then extends these ideas to full-fledged 3D objects and surfaces. Plenty of diagrams and equations are shown throughout the book, but code implementations are left to the reader. If you are interested in more modern techniques such as quaternions, there is none of that here due to the age of the book. This same author has an entirely separate book that is also excellent, "Procedural Elements of Computer Graphics", for the less mathematical algorithmic portions of computer graphics. One of the best books I've read.

This was one of the coolest technology books I've read, since I loved the topic and it was well written and explained. Please buy it if you want to know the theory behind computer graphics (like how the videocard and monitor interact to draw pixils on the screen and polygons as well) otherwise save your money if you think this will help you MAKE computer graphics. This book is all interesting theory and nothing to do with actually making the graphics themselves, unless you plan on doing it with a 1970's computer or writing your own graphics card bios or driver (or maybe a rewrite of directx?)

Mathematical Elements for Computer Graphics

While written over 24 years ago, I was hoping this book would give me an understanding of the mathematical basis (if not the current state-of-the art;) ) of computer graphics. Despite (arguable to many) years of university math courses, I found this volume merely humbling, rather than enlightening. If you are more comfortable with fairly advanced mathematical notation and concepts than most, especially relative to geometry, you may find this book useful. I found it only marginally useful -- primarilly as a reference to some concepts I had previously been exposed. Best of luck.

About the Author
Dominick Salvatore is Professor of Economics and Business at Fordham University. He was chairman of the New York Academy of Sciences and consultant to the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, the United Nations in New York, and various multinational banks and corporations. Professor Salvatore is the author of 38 books, among which are: Microeconomics Theory and Applications (5th ed., 2004) and International Economics (8th ed., 2004), Financial Economics in the New Global Economy (2004), Protectionism and World Welfare (1993), and The Japanese Competitive Challenge and the U.S. Response (1990). He has also written Schaum¿s Outlines in Microeconomics, International Economics, and Statistics and Econometrics. Professor Salvatore is the editor of the Handbook Series in Economics for the Greenwood Press. He is the co-editor of the Journal of Policy Modeling and Open Economies Review, and associate editor of the American Economist. Fairly Useful Refresher for a Graduate Level Student.

To be fair to the true value of the book, I would like to say that this book is a very useful, concise and all-round assortment of all the pre-existing economic concepts and techniques in their simplest and the most intuition-friendly form.
An undergraduate reader might find it a little challenging, but for a graduate level reader already seasoned in every aspect of economics, this would not only be an easy reading, but a very clear and insightful guide to economic rationale behind the theories they had taken for granted w/o giving its practical application much thought.
The beauty of this book for a graduate student, I think, is not in the treatment of highly advanced and feindishly complicated top of the line economic theories, but in the simple and insightful plain-langauge treatment of all the technical aspects of economics commonly and conventionally practiced in the economics discipline.
The value of this book for an undergraduate student majoring in economics or business may not be immediately evident w/o working hard at it, but rather would probably be appreciated a lot later when they are more comfortable w/ matrix algebra, calculus and econometrics.
Overall I rate this book a rare piece that balances well in the middle of the road between both graduate and undergraduate level audiences.

Great book for anyone with no practical experience in DOE

Seems to be written for people with no background in designing experiments. Gives you a good start and gives you the basic information on Taguchi methods. A favorite of Engineering students since it is extremely easy to follow. Great first book for someone starting out with Design of Experiments. Covers the full problem solving process with DOE being a part of the process.
Minimal information is given regarding Classical DOE. If you have an academic or Engineering background and are interested in learning experimental designs other than Taguchi methods, then buy the "Statistics for Experimenters: An Introduction to Design, Data Analysis, and Model Building" By: George E. P. Box, et al. -- the Classical DOE reference handbook for Engineers.

A complete course for Taguchi Engineering Techniques

Maybe the most known and recurrently used Taguchi techniques are the Orthogonal Arrays for DOE; but they're not the only ones that Taguchi developed in order to achieve a quality product design. The Loss Function, the S/N ratio and the Tolerance Design are part of the "Robust Engineering" that consolidated Taguchi as the quality guru he is.
Many general DOE concepts are so well explained in this book that it represents a great introductory text to this subject. Nevertheless this is a Taguchi techniques book, not a complete DOE text, so it's possible that you'd like to look for "Design and Analysis of Experiments" by Douglas C. Montgomery.

good understandable methods

An introduction to the Taguchi methodology as a systematic strategy for designing product and process tests that will reduce product or process variation. This text aims to make this method understandable to all professionals in quality control and non-statisticians and it does this very well.

Having been educated from an engineering perspective I found these ideas were in common usage, however the techniques were not applied to organisations, especially services until the mid 90s through the influence of Lean Manufacturing and a mature quality movement.
