Terrible terrible terrible!

This book is terrible! This is not a good review for anybody who hasn't had any previous accounting experience. The text is not written in user-friendly wording. I had somebody who is an accountant look at this book and although they understood it, they said it wasn't written very well at all! I had to buy this for an Masters level "Introduction" to financial and managerial accounting class and I know that a lot of people in the class dropped the class because they were having such a hard time with the text. If you have accounting experience, you will probably not think this book is bad, but if you're like me and haven't, then you'll be in trouble. As a degreed engineer, I've had my fair share of experience reading non-friendly texts. This one is definitely up there as far as the "BOOK FROM HELL" category.

Verbose and useless! The book says that the only way to learn accounting is to practice doing problems. It sucks at showing you how to do problems. It sucks worst at teaching you the concepts. No matter how many technical or engineering degrees you may have, this will make you feel stupid.

Generally a great text BUT some concepts are glossed over a bit quickly, e.g. Bonds, Adjusting entries. The problems at the end of the chapters are appropriately challenging but there are no answers. You gotta have answers somewhere, perhaps a web site. The print is too light and difficult to read with overhead lights.

Spanish textbook well done

We are using Dos Mundos for an adult, ongoing Spanish class. We feel it's appropriate for us in that it contains current usage, lots of pictures and proceeds from one subject to the next in an orderly fashion. Even though we're using the 3rd edition, we've found that it compares favorably with the current 6th edition.

This is for an older edition of Dos Mundos. Probably came out in 1995. The book is helpful if used in conjunction with other materials. It has some good grammar sections but one might need more than what is in this book. Dos Mundos assumes that you are in a classroom so some of the material seems brief. I don't totally trust the vocabulary section but the problem is that Spanish is so widely used that words change from country to country.

A good book for junior power engineer and good reference book for engineering students

As a junior power engineer, I find this book is very useful. As a part time instructor teaching Electric Power System, I find this book is very easy for my students to understand and apply. Although this is the first edition, and it's even older than I do, the fundamental of the knowledge never ages.

I gave five stars, not only because the material is good, but also the seller is excellent. I like the way they pack the book, it shows the respect and care about the knowledge. That's the attitude that I appreciate most.

This book provided the best examples from practical design point of view. Although some improvements can be made by adding more detailed stuff for GROUNDING, LIGHTING & SHORT CIRCUIT CHAPTERS. It provided me some basic concepts for selecting transformer's protection devices and other valuable information for about motors too.

Everything you never wanted to know about power calculations

Calculations for network analysis, instrumentation, dc machines, transformers, 3 phase induction motors, single phase induction motors, synchronous machines, transmission lines, electric-power networks, load-flow studies, power-system control, short-circuit computations, system grounding, power-system protection, power-system stability, cogeneration, batteries, economic methods, and lighting design are covered in separate chapters. The information is available, it's just not easy to find. Small type makes reading difficult for anything other than short periods.
I haven't found any errors in formulae or explanations. The organization is logical and, except for the spacing, easy to follow.
Each section has it's own table of contents. The Index is large and appears to encompass most of the important topics in the book.
I'm using it to prepare for and take my Professional Engineering Exam and it looks like it will be an excellent reference.... this is the book I'd buy to have a handbook close at hand for quick, look ups.

Great review book for microscopic and gross anatomy

This PreTest includes many clinical questions and bridges cell biology, physiology, human anatomy, embryology, and an introduction to pathology. It was very useful during the anatomy courses and helped me to a 244 on USMLE I. I know, there isn't much pure histology on the boards, but this book helped me quickly review the microscopic and gross anatomical structure of the body and prepare for USMLE I. First Aid gave me a list of areas to emphasize, but it has errors and is too lightweight for those students who want to excel and do a first rate residency.

I've got a bunch of chem books, but this is the best of the lot. Copyright 1987; I guess that was a good year for clear and thorough explanations. I especially liked Solomon's way of understanding the bonding in benzene rings. Has chapter problems with answers too. Definitely 5 stars.

good summary of HD, but a fluff piece

This book is OK (the last section is the best, in my opinion), but suffers from two problems: it seems to jump around alot and it is also pretty much a fluff piece.
The book starts out trying to describe the management changes that occured at HD, then spends many pages discussing the various finance issues that came up when the management bought HD from it's parent company, then goes into sales issues then back to management issues. So, is this supposed to be a historical record or a management book? It does not devote enough time to either topic to do either subject justice.
Also, this book is in my opinion a fluff piece. All of H-D's strengths are glorified while their weaknesses are rationalized away by saying that "everyone does it" (ex, H-D's earlier management was bad, but so was every other US company's).
The last section on how to implement these changes into your company is good. If the rest of the book was written in this format it would have been much better.

How to Succeed in America

This book gives an excellent glimpse into a company that committed most of the mistakes typical American companies make and found themselves in the same financial straits. But rather than giving in to a me-too attitude of trying to provide an inferior product with cheap foreign labor and cost cutting at every turn, they instead did things the American way - reconnecting with their customer base and creating a unique product that customers were proud to own.
Any company that deals with American consumers ought to have this book on the desk of every manager in the company.

Lessons for Manufacturing Organizations

This is an excellant example of a company that was near bankruptcy and able to pull itself together, reinvent itself, and again is a world class company. Many of the things that transpired with Harley can be subsituted into our business today. The culture of Harley is so unique that many people have the Harley Logo tatooed on their bodies! This is one of the best American business success stories I have read. Many ideas that were used to regain market share would help alot of manufacturing companies today if they follow a similar path as the Harley Execs did. In my oponion, Harley is right up there with baseball and apple pie. This story translates what people can accomplish when they have common goals.

All Editions Are Not Created Equal

"The Schaum's Outline Of College Algebra" like almost all of its counterparts in this superb series of text books, provides an efficient path to mastering its subject matter.
But beware of the so called "Digital Edition" which contains only half the number of pages as the paperback edition. As a student of mine recently discovered, the digital edition does not include the numerous examples which are the heart and soul of all the Schaum's outlines.
Amazon, by listing the digital edition as simply another edition of the book the way it would list both hardback and paperback editions of a book that both contain the same text, is misleading those who think they are are loading the entire text of the original book.
I suggest that digital and non-digital versions of a book that are substantially different be presented separately or better yet, the digital version should have the complete text. Amazon has built up a deservedly good reputation of truthfully presenting its products. Why spoil it?

Great Refresher

I've been away from college for 4 years and did not want to spend a lot of money and time learning the Math I needed to get into Calculus. When I went to the bookstore, what impressed me about this book was the number of solved problems and the additional supplementary(unworked) problems. Also it looked very concise. I got bogged down on some parts because I just didn't get some of the things the author was trying to say, but after I stuck at it and worked through some of the solved problems I never stayed stuck. If you want to get through Algebra fast I do highly recommend this book.

Good coverage of College Algebra and then some

I used the college algebra (2nd ed) outline to CLEP (college level exam program) algebra for credit. I also clepped trigonometry using the Schaum Trig outline (2ed). If you studied both outlines really hard it should be adequate preparation for college calculus. The algebra outline probably covers more than what would be covered in a college algebra course; so, you may be able to skip some of the latter chapters depending on your needs. The text also includes a very good table of contents. I have referred back to this text a few times while taking more advaced math classes. It is a very good book/study guide.

In 1987, she and her husband, Hal, whose drawings adorn Cruising Cuisine, moved aboard a 32-foot Bayliner and began cruising. Since 1992, Kay has written a cooking column for Sea magazine. Kay, whose cruising experience includes coastal Turkey and Thailand, recently completed an extended cruise of Baja California, Central America, the Panama Canal, and the Caribbean, aboard her yacht SpiceSea.

Being landlocked for 50 weeks out of the year does little in stopping my efforts in looking for the perfect cookbook for the open seas. I've finally found a must for my galley.
"Cruising Cuisine" is well laid out and has easy to follow recipes with an inventory list to help you pick and choose the spices you may need on board. The many tips on preparing and storage come in handy and go far in helping you prepare for your voyage, long or short.
This by no means is just for the sea, but at home as well. With more than 450 recipes your family and friends will be anxiously awaiting new culinary treats to be transformed from black and white text to mouth watering morsels of enjoyment!
Red sky at night - sailors delight, red sky in the morning, sailors - batten down the hatches and head to the galley to prepare hot soup and a hearty stew. Your crew and their friends will thank you!

Our cookbook of choice, after trying many

We had heard about this book while in St. Maarten and finally found it at a swap meet in Trinidad. Many sea miles later, it's still our cookbook of choice. So many other cruising cookbooks left out ingredients, had typos, or had such elaborate preparation steps that you could never make the recipes unless you had a full-sized, professional kitchen. This book is perfect. Simple, yet delicious recipes that can be make quickly (and without leaving an oven on for hours in the tropics). We especially found the appetizer section helpful when we were low on happy hour ideas.

Small Galley, Big Help!

We were only a month or so into our cruise having left San Francisco in 1998. We met Kay and Hal at the always helpful & friendly DOWNWIND MARINE in San Diego. I bought the book thinking that I would need some help, especially in our tiny galley. It's been 2 years since we left. Most of it spent cruising the Calif. Coast and Mexico. I've really grown to depend of Kay's book for ideas, tips, ingredients and combinations. Even for ideas for the odd fish that was the only thing available! Thanks for such a comprehensive and great cookbook written especially for cruisers!
