Reading a book like this makes you appreciate the rapid advancement of internet technology and the availability of online resources. In some ways this book reads like ancient history. (Remember Archie and Gopher? ftp?) That said, you can still learn how to use many older and traditional information resources, and the book's main focus -- becoming a professional information broker -- remains relevant and intact.

Part One, The Information Business, defines the market for information and the role and requirements of a professional information broker. Part Two, Fundamental Tools and Techniques, is a user-friendly guide to library, government and public records resources. These two sections are still quite useful, though obviouisly incomplete. Part Three, Electronic Options and Alternatives, is outdated, addressing no World Wide Web resources at all, though it does cover online special interest groups (SIGs) and bulletin boards (BBSs) well. Part Four, The Business Side of Information Brokering, is quite valuable and deals with completing a project, marketing, sales, pricing, contracts and billing.

Appendices cover essential resources (books, software and magazines), vendors, conferences, associations and seminars. An accompanying 3-1/2-inch floppy disk contains the appendices as well as electronic forms and letters, and a sample report. Stylistically, this disc is like a fine black & white movie. ASCII text files ensure accessibility by multiple platforms, and elegant but casual writing combined with beautifully-formatted text is information rich. If you buy this book used, make sure you get the disk too.

My information "Bible!"

A friend recently said I have "an almost pathological passion" for research. Yip, he's right! And this book, along with Reva Basch's "Researching Online For Dummies" has been of invaluable help. I read some parts of both nearly everyday. I've read in other reviews that The Information Broker's Handbook was skimpy on where to find info online. Maybe, but that wasn't the whole point of the book. And, at nearly 580 pages, it is more than sufficient in detail and is a clear, informative guide. Most people probably wouldn't pick a technical manual to read for recreational reading, but it is so interestingly written that it really is hard to put down, and you learn so much even from casual reading a bit at a time. I love this book, and couldn't do without it. It is perfect for information nuts, especially since the Internet is a knowledge junkie's paradise!

superb, but showing its age

I just bought this classic in first-rate condition from a used/rare bookseller two weeks ago. What a treasure it is! It is a joy to behold, to browse, to read. The author's writing style is a bit ponderous, but that's acceptable in view of the wealth of information that he offers. The book does need updating: it's missing some information that I have in some other vexillology books (e.g., Znamierowski and Crampton) and contains a couple of subtle errors. But this criticism does nothing to dissuade me from endorsing it most highly. It's terrific!

A great book that needs updating

I have owned this book since it first was published, and I love it. I read it cover to cover about once a year. It is factual, accurate, comprehensive and beautiful. The histories of several nations' flags makes me want more of the same for more countries and their flags. A section on the flags of Japanese provinces was the first time I had ever seen flags like that, which display the influence of Oriental art. But so much has changed in the last 25 years. New countries have been born; old countries have changed (and sometimes rechanged) their flags. I don't know if Dr. Smith is still alive; but couldn't someone update and enlarge the scope of this book? I know I would pay as much as $100 for a new edition -- IF it were as good as this edition is.

This is an excelent book on the subject of flags of the world. As I said in my one liner "I have been looking to buy an upgraded 1975 book." There is an article in the June 8, 1985 Santa Barbara (CA) News-Press concerning Dr. Smith. Excellent flag coverage!!

Second edition was better.

I bought the second edition, in paperback in 2000. It was good enough that I used it, as well as a specific book regarding regulations, to pass the Series 3 (Futures) licensing exam. Of the six dozen books about futures that I bought several years later, none came close to the quality and presentation of the information found in the second edition. Unfortunately the book disappeared, and when I wanted to clarify some information that I couldn't quite remember, I bought this, the third edition. But I'm finding it disjointed, sometimes clumsy, and no longer a 'bible' for futures. Charts and tables have been updated (now they are just a decade old), and I think financials have new material, but I don't have the feeling that the author/editor has the grasp and knowledge of the previous authors. It's like the author/editor calls this the third edition for sales reasons, but it should be considered (just) another book about futures. I'm disappointed, and will probably sell this and buy the second edition again.

great resource

I don't know what that reader below is saying.?? This book was very helpful to me when I used this for a finance class. It's great because it has quizzes/exams, definitions, key terms, a useful index, many many sample problems, and formulas in bold. When you are a busy person and are using this as a refresher, or in conjunction w/ a textbook, it's very helpful to have this paperback workbook to go through for a quick reference.

I've referred to it many times while reading through my textbook, doing homework problems, or studying for a test.

Love the schaum's series - this one in particular has been very useful to me.

Good Study Material but Some Sloppy Errors

I read this book to supplement my CFA curriculum studies. Compared to other Schaum's books, Financial Management by Shim and Siegel merits a rating of between 3 and 3 1/2.

Four chapters covering topics of Risk Return & Valuation, Capital Budgeting, Capital Budgeting Under Risk, and Cost of Capital were excellent. Other chapters were also well written. The problem sets solidified concepts and were a pleasure to work through.

The authors present the material in a straight forward and easy to understand manner. They provide numerous examples of how to apply the concepts which are truly beneficial.

My main complaint is that there are dozens of errors throughout the book, which indicate sloppy proofreading. This can potentially frustrate readers new to the field of financial management. Calculation errors (!), misapplication of formulas (Do vs. D1) and mislabeling of charts (time lines / cash flows) were particularly frustrating and can be confusing.

I welcome the authors to contact me if they plan to release an updated edition (this book copyrighted 1998). I'll be glad to share with them the errors (at least I think they are!) I found.

It would also have been nice if the authors utilized financial calculators for some of the TVM (time value of money) applications and indicated the keystrokes. A break-out box showing the steps on a Texas Instrument BA-II or HP12-C (two popular financial calculators) would be helpful.

In sum, Financial Management is a very readable book. It is comprehensive, practical, and provides a good depth of discussion without getting too theoretical. Just watch out for the silly mistakes.
