A good book, but it lacks something

I'm studying electronics engineering, and this one is one of the books recommended by my teachers, since it covers a great amount of the subjects; at first glance it seems really complicated, but you only have to get used to the author's style. The only drawback I've found is that there aren't enough solved examples, and you should know that if you wanna learn, there's no better way than doing problems and having a reference to check them. If you're looking for a book full of interesting problems, try Neamen's "Electronic circuits analysis" or if you want a book really easy to understand(although the content is very basic in some subjects) get Boylestad's.

Great Book!

This book has everything that an engineer needs to understand complex analog and digital circuitry. The book covers how flip flops and A/D D/A circuitry is implemented. At first the book was difficult but as the level of the reader is increase the material makes more sense. The author assumes that the reader has a level of proficiency with Fourier Analysis and Thevenin and Norton Equiv. circuits. As a practicing engineer now, I constantly refer to it as reference material. Everything I need technically (for circuits) is contained in the book except for microwave stuff. Great book! Hats off to the author

Excelent book for electronics engineering students !

I read this book when I was studying my bachelor's degree
in Electronics and Communications Enginering. I think it
is one of the best books I've ever read before in Electronics, because I find it complete enough for the needs of any electronics student. Though, there are some chapters which are a little difficult to understand at this level (i.e., chapter 7 about differential amplifiers and the chapter that is about DAC and ADC). In summary, I like it very much and I strongly recommend it !

About the Author
Tom Beauchamp is a well known and highly respected ethics professor. In addition to teaching at Georgetown University, he has served as a senior research scholar the Kennedy Instiute for the Study of Human Reproduction and Ethics. He has authored numerous successful texts, including Contemporary Issues in Bioethics (WAdsworth) and Ethical Theory in Business (PH). He was the General Editor with David Norton and M.A. Stewart of The Critical Ediotn of the Works of David Hume (Princeton U Press). He was formerly the Chairman of the Committee on Philosophy and Medicine of the American Philosophical Association and earned his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University.

James Rachels, the distinguished American moral philosopher, was born in Columbus, Georgia, graduating from Mercer University in Macon in 1962. He received his Ph.D. in 1967 from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He taught at the University of Richmond, New York University, the University of Miami, Duke University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he spent the last twenty-six years of his career. 1971 saw the publication of Rachels’ groundbreaking textbook Moral Problems, which ignited the movement in America away from teaching ethical theory towards teaching concrete practical issues. Moral Problems sold 100,000 copies over three editions. In 1975, Rachels wrote “Active and Passive Euthanasia,” arguing that the distinction so important in the law between killing and letting die has no rational basis. Originally appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine, this essay has been reprinted roughly 300 times and is a staple of undergraduate education. The End of Life (1986) was about the morality of killing and the value of life. Created from Animals (1990) argued that a Darwinian world-view has widespread philosophical implications, including drastic implications for our treatment of nonhuman animals. Can Ethics Provide Answers? (1997) was Rachels’ first collection of papers (others are expected posthumously). Rachels’ McGraw-Hill textbook, The Elements of Moral Philosophy, is now in its fourth edition and is easily the best-selling book of its kind. Over his career, Rachels wrote 5 books and 85 essays, edited 7 books and gave about 275 professional lectures. His work has been translated into Dutch, Italian, Japanese, and Serbo-Croatian. James Rachels is widely admired as a stylist, as his prose is remarkably free of jargon and clutter. A major theme in his work is that reason can resolve difficult moral issues. He has given reasons for moral vegetarianism and animal rights, for affirmative action (including quotas), for the humanitarian use of euthanasia, and for the idea that parents owe as much moral consideration to other people’s children as they do to their own. James Rachels died of cancer on September 5th, 2003, in Birmingham, Alabama.

A great introduction into some very important topics

I read this book with an open mind, ready for anything. I was happily surprised to find that for a book with such political implications the authors remained true to their goal: discovery of the truth. No matter whether you agree with them or not, this book is a valuable tool for anyone. It teaches us how to look objectively and carefully at topics that we often have preconditioned ideas about. If anything, its an excercise in intellectualism. This book gives true meaning to the journey over the destination.

Great writings

This book is comprised of several essays on heavy subjects. Like war, suicide, death penalty, abortion....I had to buy it as a required reading for my college Ethics class and I had to read almost all of the essays.

Well, I fell in love with this book almost immediatelly, writings are great, a lot of good arguments for and against. I decided to keep this book after class was over and used it at least twice to help me write some more school essays.I could sound educated about issues because of this book gave me different points of view.

Book deals with heavy issues that are hard to decide what is right or wrong, those issues that most people have some feelings about but are not sure what is right or wrong and put the thinking about them aside. Authors of the book make you cross that uncomfortable feeling you have when you are asked about what is your opinion about something complicated and you end up wanting to read farther.

Great read, if you can find it cheap - get it even if nobody is making you buy it for class.

Power System Analysis by Grainger & Stevenson

This is a thoroughly revised version of the classical Power System Analysis text by the late Professor Stevenson. The new author, Professor Grainger, has made every effort to retain the flavor and clarity of the original text material. The text covers all classical power system material starting with: basic concepts, transformers, transmission line parameters & performance, network models, power flow solutions, 3-phase faults, symmetrical components and applications, economic operation and power system stability. Two brand new and highly readable chapters on contingency analysis and state estimation add value to the usefulness of this text. A superb solution manual is available for instructors. This text is admirably suited to power system analysis courses at senior undergraduate level and graduate level.
We, at the University of Calgary, have adopted this as the text for the 4th year power system course ENEL 587.

Review of Power System Analysis

This book is mostly based on the classic textbook Elements of Power System Analysis by the late William D. Stevenson, Jr. While Stevenson's book was concise and to the point stressing the fundamentals of power systems, the new book is stuck in the computational details. These unnecssary details clutter the presentation and make it for hard for the undergraduate student to know which information is important and which are secondary details. In other words, the student will not see the forest from the trees! My recommendation after using both textbooks is very loud and clear: as an undergraduate text, stick with the clear and elegant original text by W. D. Stevenson and use the bloated version by J. J. Grainger only as a reference for the interested student.

This is a classic. Anyone interested in the electrical theory behind generation, transmission, system protection, power flow analysis, and system stability analysis should buy this book. This is the standard textbook in many EE departments and will prepare you well for the PE exam.

Amazing amount of info and inspiration & [good] price!

What a gem! I was surprised when I discovered this book. The gist of the book is for the child (or adult) to mark off a square space in the woods and begin exploring and learning. This book is a real integration of activities, suggested observations, and fact. The learner is to explore, dig, look, observe and investigate every inch of this square area. While suggesting the learner look for this or that, the author provides factual information about various findings. The book goes into a lot of detail and there are many things that the author thinks may be found. I bet that the learner won't find everything that is mentioned but that is OK, at least the reader can experience it in reading about it in the book if it is missed "in real life".
The book starts off in autumn, assuming the learner begins in the fall and in an area of deciduous trees. A small sampling of what is addressed in this book is why trees lose their leaves, how trees store energy and make energy, examples of camouflage with animals, migration of birds and butterflies, insects, spiders and their webs, lizards and mammals big and small. As the book progresses winter then spring then summer is discussed.
The illustrations are drawn and in color (just like the cover), these are not photographs. There are loads of details in the drawings. At the back is an illustrated guide to creatures grouped by their classification (leaves, mammals, fungi) and an index.
The learner is encouraged to do creative projects such as leaf and trunk rubbings. Also keeping a nature journal or notebook to record the findings is recommended.
I am surprised that so much information and creative ideas packed into this small and very inexpensive book. This is one in a series of "one small square" books and I plan to buy more to use in our homeschooling adventure. Now this is science!

One Small Square: Woods has been a great addition to our home school nature class. This book is full of interesting facts! Each topic has an activity/experiment allowing the reader to test, study and prove what they learned. We enjoy this type of hands on learning.

How to be a Sycophant

How do you kill the zeal that a young, aspiring, future business leader has with regard to arguably one of the strongest force in American commerce in the past 30 years? You give them Slater's biography on Jack Welch. Jack Welch's accomplishments are not to be diminished by the gosh, lavish, effusive ... style of Slater. Readers may be able to wade through the Jack-this, Jack-that approach that Slater employs to really find significant kernels of what Welch's contribution to corporate/business thought has been. It is for this reason alone that I do find some value in this book. Slater is an accomplished writer in his own right, but as a strong biographical depiction focused on delivering the mind of Welch--this books leaves you wanting.

While I have the utmost respect for Jack Welch and all he's accomplished in his career, I couldn't make it past the third chapter of this book. This collection of stories and insights reads as though its intended audience should be preparing for Junior Prom. The ideas are unnecessarily simplistic and the presentation is insultingly plain.
Though Jack Welch's approach may have been straight forward, his experiences need not be related in such a callow way.

TOP-NOTCH CEO........POORLY WRITTEN BOOK

There is no doubt about it, Jack Welch is one of the best CEO's ever. I put a low rating on the book. I couldn't stand the style. Half the book is quotes from a Welch speech...which is fine. However, the other half is just paraphrasing everything Jack says to a "T". Very very very very very very very redundant. You can get great take-aways from Jack's style. Unfortunately you have to read through the entire book. It's 10 pages of great leadership skills packed into 300+ pages.

Geared towards Engineers

The book would be of great value in the design and engineering of cranes and derricks, but is a little cumbersome and is of little use to the men and women in the field who must use this equipment on a day to day basis. I had planned to use it as an educational resource to teach construction site personnel on the general use and safety of cranes, but it was not written for this purpose.

It is well set out and concise, it covers everthing from basic safety principles through to complex engineering solutions. Your equipment will be preserved & costly mishaps will be avoided.

still valuable, if a bit dated

Reading a book like this makes you appreciate the rapid advancement of internet technology and the availability of online resources. In some ways this book reads like ancient history. (Remember Archie and Gopher? ftp?) That said, you can still learn how to use many older and traditional information resources, and the book's main focus -- becoming a professional information broker -- remains relevant and intact.

Part One, The Information Business, defines the market for information and the role and requirements of a professional information broker. Part Two, Fundamental Tools and Techniques, is a user-friendly guide to library, government and public records resources. These two sections are still quite useful, though obviouisly incomplete. Part Three, Electronic Options and Alternatives, is outdated, addressing no World Wide Web resources at all, though it does cover online special interest groups (SIGs) and bulletin boards (BBSs) well. Part Four, The Business Side of Information Brokering, is quite valuable and deals with completing a project, marketing, sales, pricing, contracts and billing.

Appendices cover essential resources (books, software and magazines), vendors, conferences, associations and seminars. An accompanying 3-1/2-inch floppy disk contains the appendices as well as electronic forms and letters, and a sample report. Stylistically, this disc is like a fine black & white movie. ASCII text files ensure accessibility by multiple platforms, and elegant but casual writing combined with beautifully-formatted text is information rich. If you buy this book used, make sure you get the disk too.

In short, while some of the content is quite outdated, this book and disk would still prove invaluable for someone who is interested in becoming an information professional. Rich in content, accessible in style.

My information "Bible!"

A friend recently said I have "an almost pathological passion" for research. Yip, he's right! And this book, along with Reva Basch's "Researching Online For Dummies" has been of invaluable help. I read some parts of both nearly everyday. I've read in other reviews that The Information Broker's Handbook was skimpy on where to find info online. Maybe, but that wasn't the whole point of the book. And, at nearly 580 pages, it is more than sufficient in detail and is a clear, informative guide. Most people probably wouldn't pick a technical manual to read for recreational reading, but it is so interestingly written that it really is hard to put down, and you learn so much even from casual reading a bit at a time. I love this book, and couldn't do without it. It is perfect for information nuts, especially since the Internet is a knowledge junkie's paradise!

Solid Basic of Starting an Information Brokering Business

In contrast to Mary Ellen's book, this book is actually for self-starters who are thinking about creating their own small business and covers such excellent basics as the market for information, what an information broker does, the pros and cons of the information business, and then the tools, followed by chapters on marketing, pricing, and project management. Although seven years old now, I still regard this as a good starting point for those who would understand the information brokering business (a small niche within the larger open source intelligence business).
