Great on review; terrible in introducing the target subject matter

This book is simply "okay." It is formatted nicely and easy to look at. The first few chapters on the review of statistics is generally nice (and even led me to question the negative reviews from others until I progressed further).

Mid-way through Chapter 6, just about when stationarity is introduced, the text becomes useless to anyone who is not familiar with the subject matter. Intuition is none-existent in the topics presented - to the extent that I was confused by the presentation of subjects that I was already strong with.

I am told Gardner's book is an excellent book with deep intuition; I have ordered it and will read it with the possibility of returning to peebles after I have a much better idea of what's going on.

A bad book to start with..

This book though looks simple and pretends to present concepts in a lucid manner, does not match international standards. Very few examples are present with less/no illustrations. I struggled with this book for almost 2 years to understand the concepts as this book was the only popular book in my UG college and was readily available in our library. It has ideally no practical examples which can easily discourage reader. After reading contemporary books from Prof Roy Yates and Prof Leon-Garcia, I could do little favor for this book by giving 1 star.

However, one who is already thorough with concepts can use this book for revision. There is a huge element of risk involved in starting with this book to learn probability concepts.

4.5 stars as an undergraduate textbook for EE students

This book is one of the best undergradute textbooks for EE students, especially students having focus on physical-layer communication engineering. The highlight of this book is the enormous amount of well-written problems at the end of each chapter. These problems really help students fully understand abstract definitions and theorems which otherwise will not be easily cracked.
This book, however, has the following drawbacks:
1. The author should have emphasized in the first chapter the importance of real analysis and measure theory in order to motivate the students planning graduate research to study and prepare for the math courses during their undergraduate study.
2. No section for complex Gaussian random variable and vector, which are very important in digital communications.
3. No limit theorems except CLT.
4. No handling of convergence of a random sequence.
Even with above drawbacks, this book is still the classic. I recommend ambitious students to read a little bit advanced books along with this book to better understand the subject.

unless your donald trump

i wouldn't waste your money on this book. The only way i can describe it is useless. Unless you plan on starting a donald trump sized electrical business with 500 employees. This book is all about running a huge business and has about one reference to the electrical field in it. Anyone starting an electrical contracting business isn't gonna start anywhere within the scope of this book.

A textbook. I was very disappointed in obvious bias.

I got this textbook for a course in social work. Actually it turned me off of the field altogether. There was such an obvious bias against, even rather contempt? for any value that would be considered conservative. Some people have traditional values in many areas but that does not mean they don't care about people that are poor or hurting. I was very disappointed.

Nick Schade, an engineer by training, is a boatbuilder and writer whose articles have appeared in Sea Kayaker and Atlantic Coast Kayaker. As an impoverished college student, he designed and built his first kayak when he realized that the price of a factory model was beyond his reach. And he's been at it ever since: More than 300 of his sea kayaks are being paddled and built worldwide. Nick divides his time between shops in Connecticut and New Hampshire and paddling the shores of New England.

Obsession: Building my own Guillemot Kayak

My parents bought this book for my birthday two years ago. Last week I finished building a gorgeous (with all modesty) Guillemot Kayak. Mr. Shade seemed to understand that there were many "right" ways to do the same thing and he allowed for different skill levels. In addition, nearly every task was described with an accurate degree of difficulty and understanding of the problems associated with each task. In fact, the only difficulty I had was when I deviated from the book's instructions to complete the hatch hold downs. If you want to paddle and have fun, go buy a "plastic" kayak. If you want people to exclaim, "What a gorgeous boat! Where did you get it?" and will derive pleasure in saying, after an appropriate pause, "I built it myself", buy this book and get started. One warning. This is a BIG project and will take several hundred hours to complete (depending on your skill level), but the book can be read and followed by anyone with average woodworking skills and the end result is quite fantastic.

This is the best one folks!

There are perhaps four books out on building kayaks available through Amazon. This is the most recent to date, and definately the best of the four I've purchased so far. I just completed a canvas number on G. Putz's book, ( which is an exceptional book also), but I wish I had seen this one at the onset for it's strength as a general reference.
So far I've know of three basic kayak building techniques - canvas on frame, stitched plywood, and strip kayaks. This book describes the very advanced (and perhaps most beautiful) method of making a boat of strips with re-enforcing epoxy. They are absolutely beautiful creations, though probably a little heavier than the plywood ones.
This is a very highly detailed book with great photographs and computer generated diagrams. The author is a professional boat-builder who, like the magician that reveals his tricks, descibes everything - down to proper material selection, a list of current suppliers, plans (x3 + paddles), scientific details on boyancy and design, and numerous other details. This book is useful to those going off of other techniques and advices.
Skill-wise I would say that you'd have to be fairly advanced, not afraid to use epoxy and fiberglass, and the owner of at least a band-saw. ( unless you buy a kit or pre-cut wood)
A great resource! I'm building a strip one next!
P.S. - the guy who says that these boats aren't seaworthy is full of bunk!

The Definitive Resource for Strip Built Kayaks

This is the best book I have ever seen on the subject of strip built technique. I have read this book, several times, and created a boat based on the designs from the author. This book has ALL the information needed to make a beautiful kayak. It is my primary shop reference, with specific details on design, how to assemble the strips, how to fair the boat, how to fiberglass, how to outfit and finish the boat. The steps are described in detail, and richly illustrated with informative pictures.
Thank you Nick Schade for your excellent book, your superb website and your magnificent boats. I picked this boat for all the wrong reasons. I had not paddled one, or evaluated the technical merits of it's design with respect to other boats. I didn't do a cost-benefit analysis or listen to the advice of friends. When I saw that boat, she stole my heart. Honestly, I can't imagine being happier with a boat if I had done all those other things anyway.
To think that by using what I learned in your book, in thirteen short weeks I watched a bundle of sticks and a roll of blueprints metamorphose into a such a beatutiful creature, is almost incredible. She may have come out of my basement through my hands, but she's your creation too, and I thank you for helping me make it real.
The single biggest disadvantage to having a boat made from this book is that it takes much longer to launch, because everyone around wants to know where you got such a lovely boat. This book will get you there, so plan ahead for the delays now.

About the Author
Terry Patterson is a licensed architect, a professor of architecture at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, and the author of several respected books in the field. He has 34 years of professional and teaching experience. He is the author of Illustrated 2000 Building Code Handbook (McGraw-Hill); Frank Lloyd Wright and the Meaning of Materials (Van Nostrand Reinhold); Construction Materials for Architects and Designers (Prentice-Hall); and co-author of Architectural Drawing and Design (Macmillan). He also wrote the Student Workbook and Instructor's Manual for Van Nostrand Reinhold's Construction: Principles, Materials, and Methods, 6thed. He is a professional member of Building Officials & Code Administrators International, Inc. and holds a National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB) certificate. Always thorough in his research, he based this current book not only on his own extensive experience, but also on material from architects, engineers, contractors, construction managers, code officials, government agencies, suppliers, and manufacturers from all 50 states.
